"Where are we gonna go? I can’t stop anyone from leaving, but I’m through running and hiding and being afraid. I’m not gonna live my life like that anymore. Aren’t you tired of living in darkness? Don’t you want to feel the sun on your face? To have a place of your own where you can walk down the street without being afraid? They made us, and they trained us to be soldiers, to defend this country. It’s time for them to face us and take responsibility, instead of trying to sweep us away like garbage. We were made in America and we’re not going anywhere. So they call us freaks; who cares? Today I’m proud to be a freak. And today we’re gonna make a stand, right here. Who’s with me?"

If anyone wants me gone, they can get up on their hind legs and throw me out themselves.

Because I ain't going nowhere.

Updates and posts in general have been getting more infrequent. And while probably very few of my AO3 readers actually read this journal, I'll just put it here for general consumption that all my fanfic progress has been going slower this year. Luckily for me, it's for good reasons and other things I enjoy. Unfortunately for my small number of readers, that doesn't show any sign of changing soon. Right now my hope and plan is to finish one other project in the next couple of months, which should free me up to put some focus back on the Portal/Terminator crossover, which is still my main interest -- not to mention the post-Predator story from Anna's perspective, the epic Xena wank short sequel that focuses on side characters instead of the main ones, the Knight Rider reboot pilot episode screenplay, and maybe even the semi-original City of Heroes story.

Fingers crossed. Thanks for your interest in my humble creations.

Rating: Mature audiences
Tags: Time travel, artificial intelligence, emotional baggage, consent issues, angst and feels, angst and fluff and smut, apocalypse fix-it, enemies to lovers

Being a hyperintelligent supercomputer, it doesn't take GLaDOS long to realize she's made a mistake. The solution may involve more than trace amounts of time travel. But it's a simple plan.

What could go wrong?

Post-"You Wouldn't Know" / post-2x22 "Born To Run" with some changes to canon.

In this chapter: Hiring and orientation. Another flashback. Another all too familiar face. And a surprising choice for a bedtime story.

Step up, now. And I'd better not be hearing any smart remarks about Spartacus.

At least one other person has written a Portal/Terminator crossover, so I'm not the first, but that one was kind of jokey -- nothing wrong with that, but this is trying to be serious. The plan is to go for moderate to occasional heavy smut and put more emphasis on the emotions and actual story. This is only the second time I've started posting something with very little prewritten or even planned out in advance, and Portal is a very new fandom for me so I'm not as super knowledgeable on the lore. Finally, regular and frequent updates for this will likely be the exception and not the rule, unless it really takes off and I set the keyboard on fire from typing so fast. So with all that said, as always: Share, and enjoy.

(Oh, and: We value your feedback. Seriously.)

So I'm preserving it here for posterity and the perpetual dopamine rush. Also because it's the kind of in-depth review I wish people would do more often in general, not just my own stuff. (I really thought that Fred/Velma story would be more popular, but I'm notoriously bad at reading the audience.)

Right now I'm writing two different pieces in script format. The pilot episode one I would call my first screenplay since the Daria story "Switch" wasn't written in any kind of real format or style, and for this one I'm using Fountain which is a variation of Markdown that's meant specifically for screenplays. The other is for a comic and meant just as a fun learning experience, but I followed professional examples as my template for the first two chapters before charging full speed ahead. Currently on chapter 15 of 21 and having the time of my life, so my goal is to finish this while still making progress on regular prose stories.

Though the only thing I've posted so far this year is two more chapters in City of Heroes, I've been flogging a good handful of moribund horses in the hopes of seeing at least one through to completion. Haven't touched the D&D story since I got the outline to chapter 13 and all I could think of was how much better it would be as an anime. But the last few days I finally got started on actual writing for the two pieces that right now are closest to my heart, namely Galaxy Quest and Demolition Man. Also bit the bullet, gave in and started writing the Knight Rider piece in screenplay format. Here's hoping.

From [personal profile] fucktheg0ds. Mostly to distract me from this old school D&D story for which I've outlined eleven chapters, because it would make a far better anime than prose, and it's amazing and frustrating that I can't find any existing anime with this kind of story.

Instructions:

  • Bold all of the following TV shows of which you've seen 3 or more episodes.
  • Italicize a show if you're positive you've seen every episode.
  • Asterisk if you have a physical copy of at least one full season.
  • Exclamation mark if it's an all-time fave.
  • Add up to 10 additional shows - the list is old! - but keep in alphabetical order.

Added: Absolutely Fabulous, Ash vs Evil Dead, Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Brisco County, Daria, Dollhouse, Kolchak, Sledge Hammer and Yes Minister. I'm watching Shogun, but I'm not putting it on this list because it's a mini series, not a "show".

The last time I posted a Dreamwidth update notification for this was four chapters ago, but since I haven't updated the story in three years, I figured I'd try to draw a little more attention to it. Sorry this took so long, but a lot of things have been occupying me, not least of which being the now-complete Dexter/Buffy trilogy.

As always I'm still trying to write other stuff as well, but I'll try to get back to more regular progress on this. Right now the plan is for 25 chapters, so we're pretty much halfway.

First Buffyverse Top Five decides to call it a day. Now Femslash Kink is saying that without a few volunteers, there won't be a list this year.

I can understand Buffy being considered a dying fandom, and F/F has always been the least popular. But if I were looking for something to blame other than humanity in general, it's the post-Livejournal fragmentation of fandom. No matter what walled garden you gravitate to, there's no critical mass anywhere.
frogfarm: And a thousand gay men wept. (Default)
ALIENS is not a horror movie because it has a happy, non-nihilistic ending.

THE THING doesn't exactly have a happy ending, and is full of ambiguity and nihilism. Normally I hate both of these. But I love the movie, and the ending and final line are in the pantheon of cinematic immortals. The whole tone of the movie, and the stakes, are exponentially embiggened when the men realize and explicitly state that they're doomed and the only thing they can do -- MUST do -- is try to save the rest of the human race, indeed all life on the planet. As for the question of whether Childs or MacReady are human at the end, I'm in the camp that thinks they're both human -- making the ending even more ironic, the nihilism all the worse, and yet countering that nihilism with a positive vision of man's struggle and temporary triumph against the horror of existence.

PREDATOR kind of splits the difference.

I am incredibly pleased with the illustrations for book 1 of the Dexter/Buffy trilogy. I'll be scanning them on flatbed once I get the physical prints, but in the meantime a photo should give you a good idea. Recently was very, very idly thinking about (which is not even as far as "considering doing") going back and 'revamping' other older fics of mine, in the same style as book 1 of Dexter/Buffy -- specifically, one or more of the prequel pieces to Faith the Vampire Slayer. Life During Wartime and Honey Moon Shine are the most obvious candidates, even though regarding the latter I can't help but groan like Harvey Keitel in Reservoir Dogs after how bloody long it took to write that last chapter even with help. But I do like the idea of polishing and refining that material as long as I'm careful not to get bogged down in the process. Still not likely to tackle it any time soon, as I'd always rather focus on getting new material done and out in the world. Publish as much as possible before perishing, whenever that might end up being. Got no reason to expect any time soon, but regardless I'll just say it again: If you've enjoyed any of my halting and fumbling attempts over the years at creating halfway decent fanfiction, that alone means a lot to me.
frogfarm: World's cutest couple (fetalpigs)
At one point I was responsible for 60% of the femslash on AO3 tagged "Bechdel Test Fail". It started as a combination of things; just trying to be accurate, being amused, and making a number of subtle observations. Just posted two more in this category, so I rechecked and despite that I'm still down to 50%. That's eight out of sixteen total, though I'm sure there are plenty more that would qualify if they were properly tagged and categorized.

I was going to go through the list, but it's almost always portrayed in the context of foreplay or full-blown sex, and as a friendly teasing and/or topping where a partner's attraction to some guy is acknowledged briefly in passing. Only two exceptions, both negatively shown: One has a flashback with a woman being sexually involved with a guy she doesn't even know, let alone have any romantic interest in; the other has a woman mind controlling another because she's gone mad from grief over the death of a man -- not her partner, but a guy she knew all her life and had a childhood crush on and who was basically her best friend, uncle and big brother in one -- and she partly blames this woman for his death, and says so.

So I may be overly liberal with my use of the tag, but if nothing else I think it's good to be accurate. Also, I just realized I need to go back and tag some Faith the Vampire Slayer with this.
frogfarm: World's cutest couple (fetalpigs)
Saw something about this subject and while I won't comment on anything specific to that posting, it did make me go back and look at my own fics.

First, there's alcohol:yo ho couple of hoes )

For "drug use", i.e., non-alcohol, I've never portrayed anything more than pot. Which includes three of the above, and one standing on its own:you can put your weed in it )

Regarding alcohol, the Dragon Maid story seems like the closest to portraying getting drunk in a negative fashion. The Terminator character doesn't repeat his alcohol or marijuana experiences, but they're not horrid or traumatic, any more than his memories and current situation. Alcohol is forced on Xena, and arguably helps her more than it hurts until Gabrielle gets involved.

Drug use: Pretty low-key overall -- most you could say is it pops up now and then. While I'd never view pot as an unambiguous good, I think these examples are an accurate portrayal of my experience, which is that I think it can be a good alternative to alcohol in terms of being a social lubricant and reducing internal and interpersonal friction. And in closing, this just gave me an idea that I might work into the new Dexter/Buffy short.

Still feels weird using AO3 drafts that expire in 30 days instead of editing local files on my own computer, but it's been good incentive to not dawdle. Posted the one Femslash Kink fill, got the outline finished for another and ready to start on writing, and there's one-maybe-two more prompts that look like enough fun to be worth tackling. Once I finish the FKM fills it's back to the other pieces I recently mentioned, although so far the only one that's getting attention and much thought is the Dexter/Buffy family dramedy with Newer Darker Astor and her Newer Darker Scooby Pals, where I'm mulling over whether the story could use a bit more substance to balance out the fluff.
