happy running 2010!

Posted in Uncategorized on December 29, 2009 by Jonel C Mendoza

this is for the runner in you.and because crappy running days can’t be avoided.

Don’t Quit

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyone of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up, though the pace seems slow –
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor’s cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out –
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt –
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –
It’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.

mula sa team hardcore, maligayang pasko po sa lahat ng mga mananakbo.
nawa’y patuloy kayong tumakbo sa gitna ng sunud-sunod na lamon at inuman ngayong kapaskuhan.
once again, please accept my simple yet undying gift of a poem that has kept me inspired since the summer of 1981.may you pick up some inspiration as you read on.
God bless you and your loved ones.
DESIDERATA
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

make mine ice-cold baguio

Posted in Uncategorized on December 7, 2009 by Jonel C Mendoza

my friends were either in singapore or corregidor.i chose to do a home run.

a golf tournament was being held along the race route so that necessitated a rerouting for the 30k race.the golf people won’t take responsibility for any hits their (puny) balls would make on runners just in case.

unfortunately, i came to learn of this development at about 22 kilometers into the race.up until then i was seething inside my hardly-sweating self and cursing silently why the route was taking a new course.

you know,i studied the route at least 4 times ,the last time at 4am during race day itself. i set my plans for a 3:30 finish for this 30k run.

but perhaps the chill and excitement of running at home again overwhelmed me that i did not bother listening to che alberto(race director) who was blurting out the route changes during the pre-race rahrah.

it was cold so i wore an undershirt and my black ballet tights if only to keep me warm.it was a feeble attempt to look and feel hot.deep inside,i was freezin’ cold.

at 5:30am,we were flagged off infront of burnham lake and i confidently did my plan-warm up some more for a couple of kilometers then charged the 3k downhill past baguio general hospital and kennon road all the way to loakan bridge before going up and slowing down towards the airport.no problems.

great.all plans were working so far.

at the junction leading to epza and texas instruments,we were told to turn right towards pma instead of left towards the voice of america area.at first,i thought it would not take the runners past the runway end.but when we went up past fort del pilar and kias,i sensed something funny.here i was running on philex road in what appeared to be endless gentle inclines.it got so far past the usual milo turnaround that i thought we would go all the way to philex mines.after what i estimate to be around 4-5 kilometers from epza,we finally reached the turnaround.

the biggest consolation though was catching the sun rising beyond the mountains and the spectacular views which i saw for the very 1st time.with cold winds gently blowing (and drying my lips), this philex segment turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

what a relief! on my way back to loakan road, i finally was able to get a taste of the first water station infront of texas instruments.wow, talk about water stations,this appeared after almost 15k on the road.luckily,it was not hot and the need for water was not really there.i was hardly sweating after 15k or so.

back on loakan road, i was once again on the part of the original route.and so with all the ups and downs loakan road had to offer,i ran with gusto.no surprises here.i was running according to plan yet again.race the dips and slow down on the ups.breath what’s left of the pine tree scent.

turning right towards south drive meant goodbye to loakan. it was at the vicinity of teacher’s camp when a runner told me why the race was rerouted.damn puny balls!never thought tiny balls could hurt so bad.we did not do the country club segment and instead went straight to outlook drive behind mansion house and towards mines view park.here,for all my familiarity with baguio, i was greeted with a hell of climb for almost 400 meters.it was so steep i almost had to walk.i slowly jogged my way up until it was mines view finally.it was my 1st time in my 28 years in baguio to run this climb.

gibraltar ,pacdal circle then back to south drive,military cut-off road, kennon road,kisad and the new finish line,orchidarium.even the finish had to deviate as there were festivities at the original starting line.

at last,i was done for my home run.as soon as i gathered my wits, i remembered my friends who did singapore. how i wish they had the same chill baguio gave me knowing how the infamous singapore humidity would wreak havoc on sub 4 and pr dreams.

while i paid for and expected a correct 30k distance,i was pleasantly surprised to get 33.63 kilometers on the reading at the race end.i made sure so i asked another runner.confirmed.this was an extended race.

it felt kinda weird running a race with no familiar faces at the turnarounds.save for chito and roselle and some happy feet peeps, this was practically bereft of familiar faces from the lowlands.

these home runs are just my kind of races.

this was one extended run i will relished for good reasons-i was running in my home turf, i did a no frills,all thrills race(kudos to che and the cool city running dudes-when are you doing the all-kennon run????)),i had a good icy-cold bath afterwards without having to buy ice cubes, i was able to do 3:17:31-ok, i was aching for a sub 3 run- (surprisingly,i finished 2nd in the masters category) and most importantly,i was home for my son’s birthday.

as a father and a runner, i got the best of both worlds last sunday.

cheers!

52k tan run

Posted in Uncategorized on December 2, 2009 by Jonel C Mendoza

you are all invited.

this is NOT a race.

this is a free test/familiarization run.

you may join or stop at any time or segment of the run.

the 2nd bdm organizer, team bald runner, will be on hand to test the race rules (you can make your suggestions as well).

this is a nice lsd for those joining condura 42 and good opportunity to heat-train for bdm.

the reason we chose this segment and time is that because this is the most difficult part of the race(after you have been on the road for 50 kilometers) and we would like to simulate the actual race conditions-heat,traffic,pollution and what not.this is also the expected time of arrival for most runners after the 1st 50 kilometers.

bring your own hydration stuff, support team and whatever you think will help bring you from km 50 to km 102.

ASSEMBLY 6:00 am JANUARY 23, 2010. STARTS 7:00 am at kilometer 50 post (ABUCAY,BATAAN). ENDS at kilometer 102 post (SAN FERNANDO, PAMPANGA).

don’t miss this.

free tan.

p.s. for those who want to stay overnight before the run,balanga has almost complete amenities like fastfood chains and decent and cheap hotels.balanga is about 6-8 kilometers away from abucay.km 50 post is located near a gas station and the municipal market before abucay town proper if you are coming from manila.
