2015 Four Lakes 100/Old Spanish Trail 50

March 28, 2015

Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines

First of all, I wish to thank all the participants, both the new and habitual repeaters, for their support of these annual events, now on its fourth edition. Thank you for imbibing the spirit of trail running and embracing our simple, no frills set-up.

I also extend my gratitude to our sponsors and partners-SMART, Universal Robina Corporation, GU gels, BROOKS, Polar Heart Rate Monitors, Gatorade, Superfood Grocer, Cordillera Conservation Trust, Dennis Uy, Che Alberto, Nixon Pasiken as well as the marshals and volunteers led by Barbara Mendoza, Glairold Recella, Brian Guleng, Tom Baniwas and Marcelino Sana-oy.

To the Municipalities of Kayapa and Itogon, Kayapa Central School, as well as the local folks for once again opening your homes and place to all, agyaman ak, Dios ti agngina kada kayo amin.

Congratulations to all the finishers, especially to those who set personal records, led by Manolito Divina, who now holds the Course Record for Four Lakes 100.

To those who failed in their endeavour, have no shame and take heart because it happens even to the very best of us. Learn your lessons well and come back stronger, wiser and more prepared. I respect you all the more for being gracious in defeat. Truly, victory favors the prepared, now you know better.

Again, please accept my most sincere and deepest appreciation for your hardcore support – for making the KOTM community bigger each passing year with your attendance.

You have now met the real uphills and downhills – climbed them, crawled them, run them, smashed them!

Mabuhay kayong lahat!

RACE ROUTE INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

All runners joining this event, a trail race, must understand that innate challenges exist and therefore, must be prepared to make decisions for their own safety without any expectation of assistance due to the inaccessibility to any type of motor vehicle, remoteness of the race route and the distance between villages/households. And given the race’s nature, the conditions normally experienced in road races are entirely different from what is to be encountered here.

While there is no guarantee that the runner is prepared for any eventuality, proper and adequate training and information about the event will increase the chances for a runner to finish the event successfully. That said, please read the details carefully before you sign up.

You have been forewarned.

  • APRIL 18. This is an and out and back race(25 kilometers, starts at 4:30 AM-1:30 PM) that will take participants to the summits of Mount Tenglawan first, then Mount Lobo.
  • APRIL 19. This is an and out and back group trek(10 kilometers, starts at 4:30 AM-11:30 AM) that will take participants to the summit of Mount Kabunian. All participants must stay together at all times and trek as one under the guidance of marshals and at no instance will no one be allowed to trek outside of the designated area.
  • Along the trail are villages where you will also see vegetable gardens and terraces. Please do your best to avoid stepping on the plants.
  •  It is STRICTLY prohibited to gather any kind of vegetation/insect/living thing for souvenir at any point of the course. Violation of such will result to outright disqualification. You may however take pictures.
  • Everyone must stay only along the designated path and not create new paths(no bushwacking) at all times.
  • THIS IS A SEMI-SELF SUPPORT EVENT. All participants are required to bring with them at least 1.5 liters worth of water(in bottles or hydration bags). Everyone is also required to bring with them extra food to last them during the duration of the events. There will be a gear check upon checking-in at the start. Anyone without the necessary items will not be allowed to proceed.
  • There will be an aid station along the route.
  • Given the altitude and characteristics of the area and time it is being held, there are chances of rain and sudden dips in temperature at times. It is therefore a must for all to bring the necessary clothing-waterproof raincoat/jacket and the like. Whistles are required as well.
  • Runners must also bring with them first aid kit consisting of cotton balls, loperamide tablets, antiseptic solution, gauze bandages and the like and wet wipes.
  • There is a possibility of leech bites(limatik) therefore, you are encouraged to bring salt with you to rub on the bite. Check on your body from time to time especially when passing through grassy sections.
  • The course will be marked with ribbons and permanent markers. There will also be some local guides acting as marshals along the route. Other than that, you will have to rely on your navigational skills, good judgment and common sense. Please take time to study the route pictures and map.
  • There will be bib and time recorders at the different aid stations so all participants must report to the stationed race marshal to have his name and bib recorded.
  • Evacuation costs for runners who will declare themselves as DNF(Did Not Finish)will be at the said runner’s account/expense.
  • Participants must conduct themselves properly at all times and are requested to treat all marshals with utmost courtesy.
  • Runners who will declare themselves as DNF must contact the Race Director or nearest race marshal informing him of such status.
  • Some of the areas along the route have hamlets so everyone is encouraged to say a word or two of greetings to the locals. Steer clear of animals especially those with their young. PLEASE RESPECT THE LOCALS AND CULTURE AT ALL TIMES.
  • Participants must properly mark and secure their belongings should they deposit their bags at the starting line. The organizers will not be responsible for any loss, damages or breakages whatsoever.
  • At ALL times, everybody must practice the Leave No Trace(LNT) credo. Please cooperate by following only what is right. Remember that we are all visitors to the place and as such, we must respect it, the people and their culture. Your full cooperation will be highly appreciated by all.
  • And with all due respect, the Race Director’s decision is final, thank you.
