Despite many people with intellectual or developmental disabilities expressing the desire to work, they continue to experience the highest unemployment rates in Canada.
At FSNE, we believe that everyone should have access to the same opportunities as their peers: inclusion, independence, and employment.
From Families, for Families
The Family Support Network for Employment (FSNE) was created to become a movement. We believe that families sharing their lived experiences, their knowledge, and their hope will inspire and empower other families on their own journeys.
Together, we can create a ripple effect of change.
Real Work for Real Pay
In adulthood, employment plays a fundamental role in an individual’s life. It promotes the development of rich social networks, increases a person’s economic status and sense of self-worth, and provides opportunities for continuous learning. A secure, paid job is one of the most important needs expressed by those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
For Families
At FSNE, we believe our role as families is to advocate for our family members with a disability, but that doesn’t mean we have to figure it out on our own. Years of research, support from professionals, and the experiences of families in our network have all helped us to compile the necessary resources to help families on their own journey to employment for their family member – from the early years and into adulthood.
For Employment Partners
Each of us plays an important role in navigating the employment system. Agencies, Educators, and Employers are all responsible for working alongside families to assist individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities to reach the outcomes they desire. Together, we can advocate for and create the changes we know are effective.
