In your own space, make a list — anything between one and ten things is a sweet spot, but don't feel constrained by that! - of things that you wish existed in fandom or elsewhere, or that you'd like someone to make for you. Are you dying for podfic of your writing? Do you need icons for a character that doesn't get much fanart? Is there a story you want to read? Are you looking for new canons to get into? Would you like a collaborator for a project?

Maybe you want more people to talk about a certain fandom with, or you'd love to trade ficlets with somebody over email. Maybe you're new to a fandom and would like some recs to start reading, or communities to join. This is the time to ask!

1. any art from any of my stories found on AO3

2. A new Journal layout

3. anything fun to do with the Nevernight Chronicles or NOS4A2.

4. If you can ever find my muse and my ability to write again, I'd appreciate if you'd send it/them home.

5. Fannish christmas ornaments.

Challenge #7

Promote/Rec/Sing the Praises* of Yourself!

~ Most of my writing can be found found on AO3

~ I don't have a ton of things other than dog photos and craft photos on it right now, but once spring hits I'll be back to taking pictures on Instagram.

Don't really have much else to say about myself. I've been in a writing slump for over a year now, and I don't see the end of it.

Challenge #8

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Skipping day 8, I haven't read much new lately, but there's tons of excellent things out there! I love all of you!

Challenge #9

In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom).

~ Oh my. LITERALLY EVERYTHING IN THE NEVERNIGHT CHRONICLES. Like. Everything. ALL OF IT EVER. C'mon. IT WAS ALL SO GREAT I NEED TO REREAD IT ALREADY. Mia. Mr. Kindly. ALL OF IT.

~ I have so many canon things I love from my favorite things. Y'all know HP is always my heart, and there's so much of it I love, but also so much fanon that has sunk into me over the years, LOL.

I don't know what else to put here right now! Sorry!

In case you're wondering, I've skipped day three on purpose. Most of the comms I've most dearly loved are now defunct. :(

Challenge #4

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Reading goals
~ Read 100 books.
~ consistently update Goodreads.
~ Read more hard copy books.

General Me goals
~ work on my patience.
~ work on keeping work at work. (Emotionally.(
~ be kinder to others.
~ keep trying to improve my health, mental and physical. Maybe even exercise more. (If I had a covered arenA this would be so much easier)
~ keep my temper better
~ try to start writing again.

Work goals
~ continue to learn AutoCAD
~ learn how to actually use Illustrator
~ internalize more of the packaging information (flute sizes, etc)
~ get salaried with at least a net of $30k. We'll see. This isn't really up to me other than to make myself look good.

Challenge #2

In your own space, talk about your fannish history.

Glad I didn't include this in my intro! Lol.

Anyway, I think i've been a fan for longer than I've known there was such a thing. Growing up, I was obsessed with Nancy Drew, with the Dragonriders of Pern, and with Star Trek. I used to even tell my brother made up dragonrider stories when we were at my dad's when I was a teen.

But I didn't discover fandoms were a thing until I'd read the first several Harry Potter books. I LOVED them. But even then, I didn't discover fandom until found a link on Leaky, I think, to some fanfiction. Even then, I didn't really find it until there was an article about some fanfiction and it linked me to one of the original SS/HG fics, and to a fic site I can't even remember the names of. I became entranced and then obsessed, and then I found WIKTT, and the rest is history. I think this was near the end of 2003, which was my first semester at college and my first time having ready and constant access to the internet.

Though I absorbed a ton of it, none of my SS/HG fics ever gained a following. My writing at first, of course, wasn't great. I found a tiny niche in rare pairs. I've archived most of my stuff on AO3.

I have since dabbled in a few fandoms, particularly the Star Trek reboot. But several years ago I just stopped being able to write fanfics on any large scale. In part, I burned myself out writing a novel for a fest (I didn't REALIZE it was going to be novel length to start with, you understand) in like, 6 weeks. But it never came readily back to me, probably in part because I was working 12 hr nights and just couldn't any more.

I have gone to a bunch of Harry Potter conventions and also some much broader conventions. Mostly sci-fi/fantasy related. I have extensively RPed in the Harry Potter world as well as in some original things. But this past year, I also seem to have lost the ability to do even that. Maybe it will come back. Maybe it won't.

My other contributions to fandoms are, I suppose, promoting a bunch of books as well as some authors I'm personally acquainted with, a few with somewhat big names but many more who I suspect will BECOME some bigger names at some point. *stares at her friend Jason pointedly* I swear to god if he ever writes his young adult series, I will MAKE it the most popular fucking thing since Harry Potter. AHEM.

But anyway, my forays into fandoms have been very diverse. I've read a lot of fandoms I haven't participated in, often because I had friends who were fans (and sometimes needed me to beta/edit things, which i actually still do for some people <3). But I'm not really someone people know or think of, just a lurker on the edges of things :)

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself!

Hi, I'm Jasmine, though I will always answer to Gelsey. I've had this handle for far too long not to respond to it :) I'll be 35 this year. I'm hopelessly single and childless, which saddens me. I live near my parents (mum and stepdad), and collectively we have two horses, Bobbi (paint saddlebred) and Butterfly (mule marked bay Paso fino, retired due to health); two dogs, Paloma (bassador, 4 years old) and Belle (Australian cattle dog, blue, and mostly blind, just over 9 months old); and a bunch of chickens.

I'm essentially a technical writer and amateur drafter with a scientific glassware company where I've worked for about 12 years next August, though I've only been in this position for a year and a half, and only learned basic drafting this year. I was formerly Quality and packer and stacker. I don't particularly care for my job, though parts of it are very interesting; I really don't like people a lot of the time.

I struggle with depression, so I'm not always great company. I like to bitch and moan to get things out of my system. I love to read. I used to write a lot, but haven't in about a year. I love to take pictures.

So yes, obviously, I ramble and have issues. Hi. This is me. *awkward wave*

All the package dramas!

But we're going to start strong with a thank you to phenomenal, whom I assume was my secret Santa! I'm so glad that the package getting drenched in the storm last night didn't mean anything was damaged. WHEW! I was so stressing when I went out the door this morning and found two packages, one very wet and one dampish, having apparently arrived after I got home, which never happens. I didn't get a chance to open them until this evening though!

picturesCollapse )

I also got that second package, and it's lucky it didn't get soaked, because it was full of books from smeddley! THANK YOU. This is great :D

I love my friends.

Day 4

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

I'm really bad at this one, but I do reply to everyone who talks to me! Does that count? Anyway, i always welcome new friends, especially if they update LJ and have a desire to interact with me. I get frustrated when i have a ton of people who never comment. No one ever has to say something to everything, but I put out too much personal stuff to have primarily lurkers (unless I've known you forever, then it's okay, I undestand).

Day 5

In your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I'm not overly involved anymore, but here's a go.

1) [community profile] interhouse_fest. We ARE planning on running another round, hopefully soonish, though we would like a third person to help with the scut work, given one of us has two small children and the other is just lazy apparently (that would be me, yes). We're an awesome HP fest comm that promotes stories between people of different houses. It's fun! We just have to get the ball rolling.

2) one_bad_man is an excellent recommendation group and I'e read a bunch of stuff that is delightful from them.

3) sshg_giftfest also puts out some of the best writing! even if I do try to convince some of those awesome people to try different htings sometimes ;)

Day 6

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

I am a greedy person lol

1) I would love some more icons. Right now I'm leaning towards dinosaurs/Jurassic Park/Jurassic World. Honestly mostly of the dinos :P Maybe even a layout, but I'm perfectly content with icons.

2) Art of anything I've written my works on AO3.

3) money for Misticon :P haha yeah right. But maybe I wasn't as greedy as I'd thought I was. First two are my wishes!

Day 3

In your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oh, this is difficult. Everyone knows that HP is my favorite forever, but i'm not actually sure I have a favorite bit of canon.

Except maybe that I love thestrals.

My favorite episode, ever, of Star Gate is the Time Loop episode. Season 4, episode whatever. Lmao. I love that one so much.

There's a TON of things I love in Jim Butcher's Dresden files. He's such a good world builder. But Sue.... Sue is my favorite.

Really i could rattle on about a lot of things I love, really. It's so hard to choose.

Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

1) The Alexandra Quick series, an HP spinoff type thing, by Inverarity. Love these and they've written the next book and are in edits. I need to find time to reread them at some point.

2) I'm not sure if I recced this last year or not, but the Love is for Children series set in the MCU verse featuring the avengers. It features non-sexual age play and is really good. It's my "I need a boost and a safe place" reading and I really recommend it.

I've not been reading much fanfic in the last year, but I know there's plenty of others.

3) and because I love dinosaurs... Pushing Boundaries series.

Day 1

In your own space, talk about your Happy Place—the things that give you joy, calms you or keeps you sane. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Mostly my happy place these days is getting to go out on my horse. This last year was atrocious in many respects, including that I spent almost the first half thinking I'd have to put Butterfly down. Luckily, knock on wood, that has not had to happen, but I am grateful every time I get to ride her, even if it's just for a walk (like what I'll be doing later today, since it's way too muddy to do anything more than that).

Reading has also been my happy place this past year. I read about 100 books, give or take, and in fact listened to most of those on audio.

Snuggling with the pup on the couch is also pretty on up there.

Day 4

In your own space, create a fannish wishlist. No limits on size or type of fanwork; just tell us what you’d like to see.

Oh yeah, this one. Heh. I'm a greedy bitch, honestly. So let's see, I'm probaby repeating myself.

1. Fanart of anything I've written. AO3 page. Or of my RP characters :P

2. A new layout for LJ or DW. The former is ancient, the latter generic. I'm completely unfamiliar with DW layouts so I'd need help putting it in place as well.

3. More people participating in [community profile] interhouse_fest next year! Lots of chance for both beloved OTPs AND rare pairs :D

4. Someone to help me overhaul my one novel length fic written a couple of years ago for the SSHG giftfest. Given how quickly I wrote it, the end especially needs some work.

5. Participate more! Comment on things! Fics, artses, just regular entries! Make fandom live again!

Day 5

Recommend a fannish or creative resource.

Honestly I'm not sure what to recommend here. I go to google and just research everything LOL

Day 3

In your own space, post recs for at least three fanworks that you did not create.

I'm gonna give you a variety that I've enjoyed this year, just because.

1. Love is for Children series - MCU - non-sexual age-play with fluff and angst featuring all the Avengers and Phil Coulson. I somehow get some serious comfort out of this series and sometimes turn to it for just that.

2. Pushing Boundaries and series - Jurassic World - a fic written based only on the previews of the movie in which Owen Grady has preturnatural powers and ends up the alpha of a raptor pack.

3. Raptor Raptor Burning Bright - Jurassic World - in which Owen Grady discovers that the raptors are not only smart but sapient, and proceeds to try to save them.

4. Interhouse Fest round-up - honestly almost everything here was delightful and I recommend them.

5. Luna Lovegood by Mywitch, but tbh any of her art makes me happy.

Day 2

In your own space, share a favorite memory about fandom: the first time you got into fandom, the last time a fanwork touched your heart, crazy times with fellow fans (whether on-line or off-line), a lovely comment you’ve received or have left for someone.

Oh my, there's over a decade's worth of memories. I remember WIKTT, and I have to honor it because it brought me one of my very best friends, Imagedelayedpoet. It also brought me my very first HP RP, and I've subsequently found all of my best friends from that particular cascade of events. I remember my first ever convention, Portus courtesy of the brilliant Imagesomigliana. I remember the most vibrant years in college, where I was at my most productive, writing-wise. Particularly [Bad username: romancingthewizard]. This year modding Imageinterhousefest with Imagekatmarajade -- the good and the bad! I know I made her laugh with all my hair pulling antics. All my years of Misti, and how much I look forward to it every year.

I have so many good memories. I do wish it were a little more active. But honestly so long as we persist, it will be!

Fandom is my happy place but even more than that -- those of you I've met through fandom are my happy place. Those of you who are there for me, and continue to be there for me, in the good times and the bad. You are my favorite memories, even if you're not here anymore.

I've participated in it, in part at least, for several years now. I like the sense of community I get from it as well as trying to get in the habit of posting every day, which is something I'd really like to start doing again. It's a challenge I've always especially enjoyed.

Okay, so, I want to TRY to do the Advent drabbles thingy, though I don't know if I'm going to formally sign up for anything in a group (though [personal profile] alisanne is mighty persuasive). And for that, I would like some prompts from you kind folks. Let's hold it to one apiece for now unless I tell you personally you can claim more than one! Then I will poke around for more if it needs filling. It's what, 26 drabbles? I won't start them until I get my current obligations done, but I'd like to at least mull them over.

Please don't hold it against me if I fail, but I really would like to write some more.

I don't really do resolutions, honestly. Mum says my goals are the same thing, but I see goals as changeable and resolutions as, well, resolute, so there you go.

I actually have quite a list this year and I'm making every effort to not be overwhelmed. There's no set deadline for them, and they're just goals. If I don't do them, I won't die.

Under a cut and separated into categories for ease of things. Going to try not to chatter about them as I go.

Dear Author/Artist,

First off, thank you for participating! And second off, I'm dreadfully easy to please, to be perfectly honest. I'm going to list a few general things below and some fandom-specific things, but take them more as guidelines than strict hard things, except perhaps my squicks. Just give me a nice little story or piece of art, and I'll be pleased as anything!

Things I Like

Plot over smut, an element of realism/believability, team or friendship fic, romantic relationships. The family of the heart or the family you make for yourself as well as blood family. Well developed characters and secondary characters having a moment to shine/being center stage.

Friendship/love in unexpected places, friends to lovers, bonding over (sometimes unusual) hobbies. Pretend relationships leading to the real thing, figuring out you have deeper feelings than you know. Wit and banter and cleverness, admiration for more than just the physical (if romantic). Cultural differences. Hurt/comfort.

Kinkwise, I can be pretty vanilla at times but aside from my few squicks, I'm open to trying new things. Kissing/foreplay, frottage, desperation, playfulness, half-clothed, oral. I don't mind most sorts of AUs unless listed otherwise below.

Squicks/Do Not Like

Having to suspend my belief in unbelievable ways. A/B/O dynamics (I find them unbelievable and absurd). Fluids not usually found in sex. Rape that is romanticized (unless perhaps it's a fantasy role play). Magical sex makes everything better.

The Grey Area

I'm not general into heavy kink/BDSM. That being said, if you do it well and it fits with the story and the characters, then I don't think I'll mind much.

The Fandoms

Stargate SG-1

I believe I chose the following:
Sam/Jack
Team SG-1
Sam/Daniel/Jack
Sam & Janet
Daniel/Jack

I'm generally hardcore Sam/Jack fan. I love them together. They break my heart. Team fic is love. I love how smart and brave Sam is. How much more Jack is than he portrays himself. Daniel's intelligence and nerdiness. Janet is awesome.

Prompts: The family we make; putting you first; everything went right but everything felt wrong.

Once again, so easy to please. You don't have to use any of those prompts!

The Dresden Files

I believe I chose:
Harry & Karrin Murphy
Molly & Harry
Harry & Bob

Honestly, I love Harry/Murphy hard but I didn't see that as an option on the let down. I even see a good argument for Harry/Molly (NOT underage). Molly/Ramirez. Honestly, there's so much to love. I am actually behind on reading the last book, but you don't have to take that into account. My favorite of all time was Dead Beat, though! I love the family dynamics that come up, Harry's found family, the way they all try to make it work.

I love friendship fic, so seeing a touching moment or someone saving someone else's ass would be awesome.

Prompts: It was like kindergarten all over again; if you don't shut up, I'll make you; you did WHAT?

Guidelines, people!

The Others by Anne Bishop

Any pairing/character

That being said, please let's not torture Meg too much, okay? I'm not looking for deviance here. I ADORE this series so hardcore. I've read or listened to it at least five times in the past year and a half. It's my go to right now. What isn't to love, honestly? The non-humanness of the Others. Meg's sweetness and willingness to help everyone. The dynamics that are formed between the Courtyard residents and the humans that make up their pack.

I'd love to see the past of just about anyone there. How did Tess know about the cassandra sangue? Just what incident did Burke go through that changed him so profoundly? Give me a tender moment between anyone. I love Meg/Simon. I love Meg and Sam. Or Meg and anyone (friendship). Or the friendship between Vlad and Simon that seems so different than most Wolves and Sanguinati. Grandfather Erebus. Jean. Hope. The old woman cassandra sangue who shaped Simon's entire life!!!

Seriously, so easy to please. I'm not even sure I have prompts for this, I just would love anything!

Harry Potter

I think I chose:
Blaise/Hermione
Hermione/Viktor
Hermione & Severus (Or SS/HG if you prefer)
Neville/Luna
Luna/Harry
Luna/Rolf
Luna/Charlie
Minerva/Severus

Guys, this is my main fandom. I love rarepairs, on the whole. If you want to go outside of this list, I'm open. I have so many loves when it comes to this, and I'm really very easy. I love magic, seeing outside what the books showed us. I love Luna's quirkiness. I love my Slytherin boys. I like Snape. I love magical creatures.

Seriously, I love everything. So helpful, right?

This is where I get a lot of my main likes up above. Friendships, made families, finding commonalities where you expected to find differences. I would love almost anything here. I don't want anything hugely dark unless you want to find a way to break my heart perfectly. (Yeah, still helpful, I know, I know.)

Prompts: The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes; they share a hobby/talent they had no idea they shared; s/he never expected this...

Just no non-magical AUs please. Pretty much anything else is up for grabs!

The Goblin Emperor

I think I chose:
Csethiro/Maia
Csethiro & Maia
Csevet/Csethiro/Maia

Ack. I know I chose more, but I apparently didn't note them down. Sorry!

I adore this book so hard, too. It's one of my other go-tos. I love the world building. I love Maia. I love the careful dance of relationships/friendships. The way he finds he has bulwarks, friendships, etc. The pronouns!!! The ears! The cultures! I could continue flailing happily away for hours.

I would love to see exploring those more in depth. Can Csethiro and Maia find more than duty and friendship? What kind of Empress is she going to be? What of the fighting on the plains? Does his cousin make another appearance, this time to help rather than harm? The list is endless.

Aside from Csethiro and Maia's relationship which I have such feels for, I also really like Csevet and Maia, as Csevet is essential the Emperor in all minor things. I think this binds them closely together too.

Jump forward in the future! Don't be afraid if that's what you want.

A few prompts: He was the Bridgebuilder, but she? She was the...; Lost in a footnote, at the bottom of the page; It was so unexpectedly expected; s/he always sought approval s/he thought s/he would never find.

Again, all of these things are merely guidelines! THANK YOU, dear creator, for taking a look here. I know I will love ANYTHING you create. Thank you for the time and care and creativity on my behalf.

<3

PS - feel free to ask questions, if you wish.

Day 2

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul.

I'm not sure if the simple act of reading a single book ever changed my life. However, I do have to say that the Harry Potter series changed my life in huge, significant ways.

It showed me that I can write. It taught me how. It gave me fandom, it gave me people -- it gave me all of you. I can honestly say that all of my close friends I met through Harry Potter fandom somehow. I don't have many friends near me. I have two coworkers I go out for drinks with, and I have my family. The nearest person I visit with otherwise -- Harry Potter fan.

So Harry Potter has changed my life, not just with the book but with the people it has given and continues to give me. I'm forever grateful for that.

I'm not sure I can say any other one thing has changed my life. It has enriched it, however. I have several series I hug to myself, near and dear to my heart. Books that I go to in times of certain things. Music I listen to as well. So much music touches my heart and soul.
