Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI Kindle Edition
Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI, written by Reid Hoffman with GPT-4, offers readers a travelog of the future – exploring how AI, and especially Large Language Models like GPT-4, can elevate humanity across key areas like education, business, and creativity.
But, it's not just a book, it's a conversation. In a first, Hoffman doesn’t just write about GPT-4; he interacts and writes with GPT-4, letting readers see the technology’s capabilities — its strengths and limitations alike. Using GPT-4 as his “author’s co-pilot,” Hoffman paints an intriguing, challenging, and often entertaining picture of what’s possible: where trouble may arise, but also crucially, what could possibly go right. His conversation with AI takes us on a journey to the future, where AI is not a threat, but a partner. A partner that can help us unlock our full potential as human beings.
How might humanity use GPT-4 to continue our long-standing quest to make life more meaningful and prosperous? How can we use it to help solve some of the hardest challenges we face? To expand opportunities for self-determination and self-expression?
Along with solutions and opportunities, GPT-4 will also create its own challenges and uncertainties. Impromptu explores how we might address risk as we continue to develop AI technologies that can boost human progress at a time when the need for rapid solutions at scale has never been greater. Impromptu starts the conversation, and invites us to join that conversation to shape our collaborative journey and achieve our destiny.

He possesses a unique understanding of consumer behavior and the dynamics of viral businesses, as well as deep experience in driving companies from the earliest stages through periods of explosive, “blitzscale” growth. Ranging from LinkedIn to PayPal, from Airbnb to Convoy to Facebook, he invests in businesses with network effects and collaborates on building their product ecosystems.
Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional networking service, in 2003. LinkedIn is thriving with more than 700 million members around the world and a diversified revenue model that includes subscriptions, advertising, and software licensing. He led LinkedIn through its first four years and to profitability as Chief Executive Officer. In 2016 LinkedIn was acquired by Microsoft, and he became a board member of Microsoft.
Prior to LinkedIn, Hoffman served as executive vice president at PayPal, where he was also a founding board member.
Hoffman joined Greylock in 2009. He focuses on building products that can reach hundreds of millions of participants and businesses that have network effects. He currently serves on the boards of Aurora, Coda, Convoy, Entrepreneur First, Joby, Microsoft, Nauto, Neeva, and a few early stage companies still in stealth. Hoffman posits that AI can serve as a powerful tool to create empathy and understanding among individuals from different backgrounds. He cites examples of AI technology's current use in facilitating emotional support to individuals grappling with mental health problems. The book is insightful, with Hoffman recognizing the potential hazards of AI, including bias and unethical practices with its use. It's an excellent read for technology enthusiasts and non-experts as well, giving both practical and thought-provoking ideas for the future. Highly recommended it for a great read about this fascinating technology.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhether it is literature written by ChatGPT, artwork produced by DALL-E or Midjourney, or music created by Jukebox, Artificial Intelligence and its impact on society are one of the latest hot topics in technology circles. It is not uncommon to hear people discussing the potential impact of AI on the employment ecosystem, whether AIs and their usage should be regulated, or even outlawed, and whether the adoption of AI will lead to mass unemployment as humans find their jobs supplanted by these technological marvels. In Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI, Reid Hoffman attempts to explore and answer – with the help of AI itself – these and other questions facing the future of Artificial Intelligence.
While the book gives GPT-4 (the successor to GPT-3.5, on which ChatGPT is based) a partial authorship credit, this seems to be less in recognition of true authorship and perhaps slightly more of a gimmick to invite attention. Some of the contributions of GPT-4 to the narrative of the book are somewhat predictable and not revelatory in the manner that I had hoped. Using AI to perform instead what often seems like basic research, or to only offer support to the arguments being made by the human author, is a reasonable way to approach writing this book, but allowing the AI to provide insightful commentary not suggested by the human author would have made for a more engaging journey. Many of the conversations contained in the book with GPT-4 are simply the author dictating a particular response – some of the details are left up to the AI, and its responses are still interesting and insightful, but, for the most part, these exchanges seem preplanned rather than spontaneous. Or, put another way, it is like a craftsman using a tool, rather than a collaboration of peer minds. In this manner, the book fails to meet the highest expectations of AI taking a fully active role in writing the book.
That said, Hoffman does a good job of exploring many of the facets of AI and hurdles facing the widespread adoption of AI-based systems in general in a variety of different fields, from education to journalism to justice and equality among the disenfranchised, among other topics. Together with GPT-4, he tackles topics such as the tendency for current AI technologies to “get it wrong” and how the usage of these technologies might change the landscapes of the fields they are used in. He also touches on the potential impact of “bad actors” who might misuse AI technologies in the future, and some of the things we might potentially do to help prevent those outcomes. These musings are obviously very speculative, but they make for entertaining speculation and keep the book engaging.
While this book might not cover significant new ground for those actively following the development of AI technologies, it remains an interesting look at the burgeoning field, and provides a good background and engaging exploration of the topic for the more casual observer. Hoffman’s technology background and exposure to several AI-related enterprises (he serves on the boards and/or has funded several) have equipped him to speak authoritatively and intelligently about the topic. Overall, the book is an enjoyable exploration of the landscape of AI today, and its flawless editing earning it a rating of 4 out of 5. Despite, in my opinion, falling short in integrating AI as a full-fledged co-author, it is definitely recommended reading.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIn "Impromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI," Reid Hoffman explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and human connection. The book is a thought-provoking read that challenges readers to consider how AI can be used to enhance our ability to connect with one another.
Hoffman argues that AI can be a powerful tool for creating empathy and facilitating understanding between people from different backgrounds. He provides numerous examples of how AI is already being used in this way, such as in the development of chatbots that can provide emotional support to individuals struggling with mental health issues.
However, Hoffman also acknowledges the potential risks of AI, such as the perpetuation of bias and the potential for misuse. He emphasizes the importance of ethical considerations when developing and deploying AI technologies.
Overall, "Impromptu" is a well-written and insightful book that will appeal to anyone interested in the future of technology and its impact on society. Hoffman's ideas are both thought-provoking and practical, making this a valuable read for both experts and laypeople alike.

Priscilla CredicoReviewed in Brazil on March 20, 20235.0 out of 5 stars How artificial intelligence is changing society.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe author offers a fascinating analysis of the interaction between people and artificial intelligence and how this may benefit us in the future. The book is an exciting read that encourages readers to think about how AI can improve human connection and function in various contexts.
While artificial intelligence (AI) cannot completely replace human interaction, it can be a valuable tool for fostering more effective and expressive communication.
Surprisingly, the book also discusses the dangers that AI can pose, like the possibility of abuse. It emphasises how crucial ethical factors are while creating and applying AI systems.
I suggest the book to anyone who is interested in the future of technology and how it will affect our society because it is a well-written and educational book.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseImpromptu: Amplifying Our Humanity Through AI
I was immediately intrigued when reading that Hoffman used GPT-4 as his co-writer, this made the book even more intriguing and compelled me to continue reading since the AI model was contributing in ways that were both funny and intellectual. The idea to include Chatbots into the writing of a book is a novel idea and one that i think has been mastered by this book.
It teaches us about the vast capabilities of AI and also some of the defects of it and how it doesn’t always understand everything that it’s meant to answer; showing us this complicated relationship we have with this life changing scientific advancement.
Hoffman using GPT-4 as his wingman helps show us the pros and cons of using AI on a daily basis and how it can benefit us or negatively affect us and give us answers that aren’t accurate or at at least not the answers we were searching for.
Valentin BobocReviewed in the United Kingdom on April 21, 20235.0 out of 5 stars An interesting book and a futuristic premise
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseChatGPT has taken the world by storm with its uncanny ability to hold conversations and assist users with various tasks from writing emails to creating shopping lists and synthesising information from different sources. In Impromptu , Reid Hoffman embarks on a unique endeavour to write a book with assistance from GPT-4, exploring an optimistic near future in which AI language models are helping humans nurture their creative potential in areas such as art, business, and education.
The generic picture of AI in the shared consciousness is usually provided by something that resembles Star Trek's Data, a sentient made of carbon, endowed with superior mental abilities, which can offer a view of humanity from the outside. Hoffman makes it very clear that AI language models merely predict flows of language. They are neither intelligent nor sentient by any reasonable definition, but they are capable to use statistics to collect and reframe existing information. Luckily, collecting knowledge and putting it into a different perspective to generate action is perhaps one of the most typical human tasks.
Throughout the book, Hoffman constantly interacts and converses with GPT-4, giving the reader a glimpse of the AI's abilities. GPT-4 is even credited as a "co-pilot" rather than a co-author of the book and it is even prompted to write a note at the end thanking Hoffman for the opportunity to participate in such an ambitious project.
The book explores a wide variety of areas where AI can be useful. Sometimes, the uses are more entertaining or prosaic: GPT-4 can write jokes about how many lawyers are needed to replace a lightbulb; it can generate imaginary dialogues between dead philosophers; or even write sonnets about sonnets. Some of the uses are more practical. Language models could be used as a catalyst and contrast for writing essays. GPT-4 can provide a rough draft that is not entirely accurate but it is, in the author's own words, "almost right" and a good starting point for further inquiry. GPT-4 discusses the benefits and drawbacks of various business strategies. The author even attempts to obtain some preliminary policy prescriptions on how to use AI to enhance social justice in the criminal justice system. We are even faced with the counterfactual that AI could have helped catch Bernie Madoff earlier by spotting irregular patterns in individuals' and businesses' financial reports.
The book does a good job of building a picture of how AI could help enhance humans' skills and creative abilities in very different areas of life. Hoffman's great storytelling interweaved with his constructive dialogues with GPT-4 paint a very vivid picture of a world where human happiness, creativity, and prosperity are significantly enhanced by technology.
I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars. The writing is very engaging and accessible. The book does a good job of explaining the real capabilities of AI together with its pros and cons. It is informative and stimulating and in parts even humourous. It has all the ingredients I am looking for in a popular science book. This is a great fit for pop science enthusiasts and anyone who is interested in learning how computers could make our lives and work more productive and exciting.
