  • Learn how to get the best out of Spring Cloud, Kubernetes, and Istio in combination

Book Description

THIS BOOK IS OUTDATED: A new and updated version of this book is available. You can find the link further down on this page.

The expanded scope includes native compilation of Spring-based microservices, support for Windows & Mac, and an introduction to Helm 3 for packaging and deployment. A revamped security chapter now follows the OAuth 2.1 specification and makes use of the newly launched Spring Authorization Server from the Spring team.

Starting with a set of simple cooperating microservices, you'll add persistence and resilience, make your microservices reactive, and document their APIs using Swagger/OpenAPI.

You'll understand how fundamental design patterns are applied to add important functionality, such as service discovery with Netflix Eureka and edge servers with Spring Cloud Gateway. You'll learn how to deploy your microservices using Kubernetes and adopt Istio. You'll explore centralized log management using the Elasticsearch, Fluentd, and Kibana (EFK) stack and monitor microservices using Prometheus and Grafana.

By the end of this book, you'll be confident in building microservices that are scalable and robust using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud.

What you will learn

  • Build reactive microservices using Spring Boot
  • Develop resilient and scalable microservices using Spring Cloud
  • Use OAuth 2.1/OIDC and Spring Security to protect public APIs
  • Implement Docker to bridge the gap between development, testing, and production
  • Deploy and manage microservices with Kubernetes
  • Apply Istio for improved security, observability, and traffic management
  • Write and run manual and automated microservice tests with JUnit, testcontainers, Gradle, and bash

Who this book is for

This book is intended for Java and Spring developers and architects who want to learn how to build microservice landscapes from the ground up and deploy them either on-premises or in the cloud, using Kubernetes as a container orchestrator and Istio as a service mesh.

No familiarity with microservices architecture is required to get started with this book.

About the Author

Magnus Larsson has been in the IT industry for more than 30 years, working as a consultant for large companies in Sweden such as Volvo, Ericsson, and AstraZeneca. He has seen a lot of different communication technologies come and go over the years, such as RPC, CORBA, SOAP, and REST. In the past, he struggled with the challenges associated with distributed systems as there was no substantial help from the software available at that time. This has, however, changed dramatically over the last few years with the introduction of open source projects such as Spring Cloud, Netflix OSS, Docker, and Kubernetes. Over the last five years, Magnus has been helping customers use these new software technologies and has also done several presentations and blog posts on the subject.

The author doesn't mention the fantastic Spring REST data project, that automatically generates all the controllers and routes to expose a data repository over REST. Maybe that's because if he'd mentioned it the book would only be half as long.

Just loads of code to build a sample app, few diagrams or more abstract explanations. Total waste of money

This is one of my favorite books on Spring Boot microservices altogether and the second edition covers even more topics than the first, updated to Fall 2021. It is one thing to learn about the concepts and technologies and do some tutorials, but it's quite another thing to apply this to a real world application. This book puts it all together in a hands-on fashion and has proven virtually invaluable for our team venturing into that area. Expect a steep learning curve, though, as the matter is complicated. In part I you'll develop a simple set of core services plus one composite, from simple to reactive and message-based. In the following parts, you learn how to deploy them utilizing Spring Cloud, Docker, Kubernetes, Istio and such, the amount of technologies involved is huge and comprehensive. I would recommend to write your own microservice set for a slightly different domain (I did so in Kotlin) and use the book's code examples as a reference, as you learn best from doing mistakes, but it's worth it. Besides, the code contains many practical recipes, hints and solutions, including testing. A book like this cannot be a one-stop of course, but it gives you a good overview of things while being as concise as possible. We are grateful to the author he spent the effort writing it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on micro services, period!

Have to admit - this book exceeded my expectations by a big margin. I do not think there is any better practical introduction to the micro services out there. Shows typical micro service evolution and how-to make it state of the art. "Micro" is very deceiving, the real production grade micro service is not a cup cake!
