Current Mood: creative | | Monday, November 13th, 2006 | 1:38 pm [sergejru]

php не интерпретируется
Настраиваю сервер Apache под Gentoo Linux. Поставил вручную php (emerge не сработало). На сервере команды типа php [file] выполняются, а вот в браузере нет. Пытался прописывать AddType и Action, тогда говорит, что The requested URL /usr/local/bin/php/index.php was not found on this server. Интерпретатор здесь /usr/local/bin/php | | Saturday, November 11th, 2006 | 9:44 pm [kharkharkhar] |
ZD-1211 problem
Hey community, this is a problem I've been having on and off for the last month or 2 concerning the zd1211 driver. Basically it's flooding dmesg and causing my whole system to hang. It hangs at such weird intervals that it could happen in the middle of a keydown/keyup...causing my computer to think the key is still down until the zd1211 driver gives control back, it seems. I don't really know how the kernel works, so that's my best guess. I would really like to be able to type long sentences again without it hanging. Happeningly, it hasn't happened once while typing this, but happens a lot while I'm using quanta/anything KDE-based. It does happen in non-kde though, before anybody jumps on the "it's kde's fault" bandwagen. ( partial dmesg outputCollapse )I've googled and googled for what the hell it means, and the best I can come up with is that BCN means beacon :P I'm running the dongle in Master mode to provide my apartment with sweet, sweet wireless, but if this can't be resolved I'll have to get a stupid router or something. Can anybody help me to make this go away? Thanks in advance (x-posted to gentoo) | | Thursday, October 26th, 2006 | 12:32 am [sigkill]

SGI Octanes for Use in Gentoo Dev
I've got three SGI Octanes with a gig or two of ram in each of them along with 36 gig SCSI drives and SI/MXI Framebuffers. I'm looking to send one of these to the developers in Australia so we can get some better support for the IP30 systems. Does anyone here live near Sacramento, CA and have any interest in working on one of these systems? These are Dual R10000 CPU systems from about 1998 Thanks! KDE/Gentoo/ALSA Argggghh!
I've been using various varieties of Linux for a few years now, but mostly only on servers, so this (sound) hasn't really come up before, and this is also my first Gentoo install (I used to use SuSE): Sound is up and running using ALSA in the kernel. When I type madplay -v /some/file.mp3 It plays the file just fine. But only from the command line. No KDE desktop sounds, no juK, no nothing running under KDE. I assume something is wrong with this aRts thing. But I know nothing of any of this; I've gotten this far (to "it plays from the command line") with incantations I found online, but I don't really know what I'm doing here. I've realized, in doing this Gentoo install, how much I've relied on the SuSE setup tools..I really don't know as much about what I'm doing as I thought I did. Any help? | | Saturday, September 30th, 2006 | 12:19 pm [kyrie1618]

installing on a flash drive array
Using a PPC Mac Mini, been using Gentoo for a couple years, very happy. But I just had a harddrive failure, so I'm looking to install gentoo on a RAID of usb flash sticks. So... Who out there has used RAID5 on Gentoo, and is there any real reason I should use LVM? Can my boot/kernel directory be on the RAID, or on RAID+LVM? | | Wednesday, September 27th, 2006 | 2:56 pm [sigkill]

fun with poptop pptpd server...
Hi guys it's me again, I don't really post enough. I was toying with the poptop pptpd server last night and finally got it working, with multilink support, but sadly, no compression. I am using it on my Linux box and using the windows xp/2000 client to login to it. Anyone out there ever try this setup? It's quite simple to get working, but what I want is some damn compression so it will be useful. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! Bob | | Thursday, September 14th, 2006 | 10:51 pm [arcticfoxslash]

Digital voice recorder question
Hello. I bought a digital voice recorder once and its an Olympus recorder... Well I plugged it in and found it has some proprietary protocol. So I tried running the windows software in wine and it works except then I cannot read the USB... So now I am wondering on any digital voice recorders that can be viewed as a mass storage device or some that have little flash cards (preferably Sony if it uses flash cards so then I can transfer things right to my PSP). Recompiling portage
I made the mistake with using the "-03" flag in /etc/make.conf and everything is buggy. Especially X and Firefox. Is there a way I can recompile everything on my system with an "-02". Does emerge world recompile EVERYTHING or only certain ports that have been updated? Thanks Also I need to downgrade xorg if my recompile doesn't work. I have the rare Asus bug that prevents virtual terminals from popping up in X. When it freezes I have to hit the reset button because I can't leave X. Not even a backspace + alt works. The bug was fixed but it reappeared. How fustrating. Current Mood: frustrated | | Saturday, February 4th, 2006 | 3:49 am [sigkill]

Gentoo Linux Community Maintainers?
Hey there folks… It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything on here. I just noticed that in the past three years we’ve gotten a ton of new members to the community. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of things we could add to the group, and as well if anyone else would be interested in being a moderator or maintainer? So if you have any comments of suggestions for things for this group… Reply here! Bob Current Mood: anxious | | Monday, January 23rd, 2006 | 12:45 pm [el_diavalo]

n00b question about changing device ownership
I need to change the device ownership from root to a group. Everything I've tried has resulted in failure. Does anyone have any ideas for a n00b on how to overcome this obstacle? Thanks in advance for your help. | | Friday, September 16th, 2005 | 10:22 pm [kharkharkhar] |

Help!
I have an eMachines m6811 laptop, which has an amd64 3400+ processor, the VIA chipset, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 video card. I'm running x86 Gentoo on it, and I cannot get direct rendering to work. I have a post on the gentoo forums with links to the necesary config files, logs, and various outputs here. If any of you guys know how to fix this, I'd be greatly appreciative!

Anyone here got experience in building, installing, managing (,etc...) clusters? I'm drawing up schematics, trying to decide how I want to build my own cluster (either in a single, larger sort of case or assembling my own rackmount if I can't find one for cheap). Mostly I'm interested to know how I need to situate fans in a single case scenario for the most efficient cooling (and how to also set up the PSUs in an efficient manner). What are the draws on the electricity like for, oh say, 4-6 node cluster? I'm aiming at cost-effectiveness, too. Also, I've seen -one- whole instance on the internet through my googling of a cluster used as a gaming server (6 nodes, 1000-player capacity, apparently.) but I'm still at a loss as to how one sets up game servers on a cluster such that it uses the whole cluster. Doesn't really make sense to me considering how you'd have to parallelize the game server software first... unless you use openmosix or some such? Please, feel free to correct me if I've got the wrong info. cross-posted to linux, gentoo, linuxsupport, and gentoolinux | | Thursday, March 17th, 2005 | 12:13 pm [dirtyhands]

Hi, I'm new
I've been installing Gentoo on my home PC for three weeks and I've all but given up. I can get Gentoo to start, but two crucial things fail to work: 1. No internet connection. When I was setting up off the livecd it worked fine and I didn't have to do anything, and now when it boots it doesn't seem to have any trouble starting eth0, but trying to ping anything besides myself I'm told "unknown host." More importantly, though: 2. it starts in plaintext mode ... whatever it's called ... it doesn't try to start in X. Then when I run startx or xinit, it fails, saying "cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer devices." What does this mean? How do I do that? I tried setting the environment variable $FRAMEBUFFER to /dev/fb/0, but this doesn't make any difference. I'm really at the end of my rope with this ... I'd been using FC1 (which wasn't that great) before and I was excited to make a change, but this has been the most frustrating install of my life, and I've installed many a Windows OS in my time. Any advice would be just great. | | Wednesday, March 16th, 2005 | 8:30 pm [finchee]

newb!
hey all ... newb in the house. so i'm pretty much a total linux newb ... i have given it a go a few times but can never get my wireless card to work (belkin f5d6050v2) - my friend is a keen gentoo user and told me to give it a go .. and that you can get my card to work. so started sunday, and today i am just waiting on KDE, XFCE4 and Open Office to finish emerging so i can restart my laptop. Has anyone had any exeperiences with the Belkin-F5D6050v2 card? I am trying to go with this method, but I don't know howto start/stop services without having to restart my whole laptop ;) |
