Trade-Related Illicit Financial Flows in the Western Hemisphere, 2013-2022

New GFI analysis of Western Hemisphere trade data from 2013–2022 reveals worrying patterns of trade value gaps, both in absolute volume and relative to the size of national economies. Trade misinvoicing, the deliberate over- or under-statement of prices or quantities on trade invoices, is widely recognized as a major channel of IFFs, and is an increasingly important money laundering vulnerability given the growth of world trade.
