- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI found this at my local library and fell in love. The recipes are easy and short not full pages long of ingridients and directions. As a Mom I want to make things for my kids I didn't always have the luxury of growing up but I also know that time is precious meaning every minute away from my kids means minutes stacking up for messy disasters, seriously, elaborate cooking directions are not a mother's friend in the face of spending time with their kids and this book solves that issue.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2015I was really thrilled to snatch this up for free. It's full of family-friendly, easy to follow recipes. There's a great variety in this book, and I especially liked that it was tailored to MOPS moms. The only thing that would have made it better is pictures!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2014I love this cookbook. We spilled sauce all over it & are buying a replacement. The very best pulled pork I've ever had was made with this cookbook's slow cooker pulled pork recipe. The whole book is good & filled with a wide range of easy family friendly recipes. I like the author's introductory remarks for each chapter too :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2014Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThere are some great recipes in this book - great for families. We like it because it's everyday food, not too fancy which is what I was looking for to feed my 4 boys.

In the Introduction, Leigh tells her readers what they do in her family's home:
In our home, we try to sit down together to eat at least four nights a week. Yes, it takes work to get everyone's schedule to somehow align and to get food on the table. And yes, many nights it doesn't work out as well as I imagined.
But we try, and I have seen that the more often we make time to eat together, the better our family relationships become. We have learned how to work together (when the boys are hungry enough, they don't mind helping!), we have learned better table manners, and we have learned so much about our boys' thoughts and ideas we may never have known. (p. 11)
I prepared the `MOPS Mom: Slow Cooker Pulled Pork' recipe the other day. It was delicious! Here is the introduction to the recipe:
Heidi Johnson grew up in Texas helping her mom in the kitchen. But it wasn't until she left home that she learned how to really cook on her own. "I learned to cook from my mom, a cookbook called The Joy of Cooking, and the internet," Heidi said. "My husband, Clay, loves that I like to cook."
Heidi and Clay have a young son, and their second baby is on the way. This favorite recipe is something she created by combining several other recipes into one. "The sauce is my dad's, the spice and mustard rub is from Cook's Illustrated, and the rest came from some slow cooker barbecue recipes on the internet." (p. 166)
Here are the ingredients from this recipe:
* 1 (5-7 lb) pork butt
* ¼ cup prepared yellow mustard
* 2 tsp. liquid smoke
* 2 Tbs. ground black pepper
* 2 Tbs. smoked (or regular) paprika
* 2 Tbs. sugar
* 2 tsp. salt
* 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
* 1 cup beef broth
* 2 cups Barbecue Sauce
(p. 166)
I plan on trying many more of the recipes in this book! It is always exciting to have more meal options. It is really easy to get into a repetitious meal rut! I look forward to sitting down with my husband, Fred, to decide what to try next!

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2012Format: PaperbackFirst of all, I would like to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to Leigh Oliver Vickery and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Food Family Style" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.
When I received my reviewer copy of "Food Family Style" by Leigh Oliver Vickery, I drooled as I skimmed the entire book! Each recipe is marked by symbols that identify them as easy to double, good for freezing, gluten free, healthful, MOPS (Mothers of PreSchoolers) favorites, for the slow cooker, and vegetarian. It's always nice to know when something is easily freezable. The next thing I did was attach sticky notes to the pages containing recipes I wanted to eat right now! Sadly, my next trip to the grocery store was scheduled for Friday, so I got to drool a little more as I added items for my recipes to my shopping list and waited IMPATIENTLY for the weekend.
But this is so much more than a cookbook. There are tips for getting kids involved in the kitchen, which makes sense considering the MOPS favorites selections. Besides all of the recipes for snacks and beverages, breakfast, pizzas and burgers, soups and salads, main dishes, sides and desserts including more exotic fare featuring lamb, curry and quinoa, this book places a great emphasis on making mealtime a social family event. It contains terrific ideas for starting meaningful family conversations. There are also suggested menus for different occasions, lists of essentials for every kitchen, and a list of substitutions for ingredients.
My family tried the restaurant-style biscuits, beef stroganoff , magic beef stew and roasted maple butternut squash all in one weekend. Each dish was good overall, just not spicy enough for us. I would definitely consider using these recipes in the future with some modifications to add a bit more zip. Also, I would've really appreciated serving sizes and nutrition information for the recipes, but I suppose it's better for me to do the math and be disciplined about my portion sizes. But those who aren't actively managing their health and/or weight may be tempted to eat more than they should. However, the author specifically addresses proper portion sizes in one chapter later in the book.

This is a lovely book and so much more than just a recipe book. It's written in a chatty and easy to read style with lots of information. I can't wait to try out some of the recipes with the family and will certainly be taking some of the tips for cooking with children on board to hopefully make it an enjoyable experience for all. Pictures of prepared meals would have been useful though.
