- Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI came home from work to discover a review copy of this book in the mail. I sat down to check out a page or two of this adorable book. I ended up reading over half of it before my husband told me dinner was ready. I was immediately drawn into the book by the front cover and transported inside an Amish farm cracking up over this heartwarming story of Lily and her family.
This is the first of four books in a series aimed at readers eight years old and up. It has thirty-nine short chapters with beautiful illustrations that reminded me of those in the Little House on the Prairie books.
Each chapter unfolds a new adventure through fun loving Lily's eyes. This precious novel begins with Lily and her younger brother, Joseph being rushed off in the middle of the night to their grandparents' house without saying good-bye to their mother. This troubled Lily greatly. They would learn the next day about the new member added to their family. Dannie was their new baby brother.
I loved how Lily asked her father where this new baby came from and her father's reply.
"God brought him to us, Lily."
"Lily clasped her hands at the thought. How wonderful that God had taken the time to bring a baby to them! "Is God still there?" she asked hopefully. But Papa said, No, she couldn't see God today."
"What a disappointment. Lily wished she had been home to meet God when He stopped by the house to bring a baby. The thought of meeting God was even more exciting than having a new baby."
I was captivated by this sweet six year old girl. Lily stole my heart. I found her view of life charming, innocent and real. I smiled big as I read about Lily's life. I enjoyed reading of how they added a new family member, had a barn raising, a new dog, cow, and chickens and took a trip to Kentucky to see their grandparents delightful. All the while learning life is always changing and there are new things to discover and learn.
It reminded me of the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls. It's definitely a story for all ages. The detailed illustrations enhance the story. The reader will get a peek into the Amish life style through this child's eyes and learn how this community does family, school and how they interact with friends. I highly recommend this novel for readers of all ages, it's fun and enchanting.
I’m thankful for the review copy of a book that answers the question, “What does it mean when someone says; God has healed me from the inside out? How can I let God touch the hurts in my heart and be healed?”
Denise says, “You can only live with your heart shut down for so long. Eventually you will fight for your healing or you will die… Some even find God when their lives fall apart!....Sometimes a person has to die in order to really live. ..Hungry for something real?.. (tired of just going through the motions of life and feeling numb inside?) Want to feel alive? Seek whatever helps you rediscover that carefree childlike heart I know is in there somewhere – that is what you should be doing to Feel Alive!”
This is a walk Denise’s characters have gone on and/or just started down the path. I enjoyed this cast so much, they are fun, bold and each have been knocked around by life. Each has a different result and story to tell.
Scarlett Jo is a Pastor’s wife that’s fun and doesn’t care what people think about her. Denise writes, “Scarlett Jo hadn’t simply survived her life. She had learned how to live in spite of it- and not to worry too much about the perceptions of others.”
Scarlett Jo is fun loving, free spirited and an inspirational person! I loved her voice and her outlook on life she says, “Oh, child do you not know about couponing?...I’m feeding a pack of wolves at my house. If I didn’t know how to coupon, my children would have had to eat me by now. But if you ever want to learn how to do it, you just let me know. It is crazy girl! I can go to a store and leave and they’ve paid me money.” (I want to learn – teach me! Teach Me! Grin!)
The characters in this novel welcome you in as family. They’re situations will tug at your heart. What I love about Denise’s books are this, you’ll be having a good time reading then all of a sudden she cleverly interweaves spiritual truths that pierce your heart, make you stop and think. Denise will help you “See lies you believe.” You’ll laugh out loud and get teary eyed in parts of this story, a winning combination.
I really liked Scarlett Jo’s husband too he says, “I watch people. I take in people. And to be honest, I learn a great deal about them by what they don’t say.”
I highly recommend this novel and the non-fiction companion book called Reclaiming your Heart! It’s a win win combination. A book you’ll want to put on your summer reading list. Did I mention I just love the cover of this book too! It’s a keeper!

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseFollow along with six-year-old Lily as she navigates learning the importance of watching her younger siblings, the first day of school, and making friends (some nice and others not so nice). She will have you laughing and feeling compassion at any moment.
I have always been fascinated by the Amish and getting to read about their life from a child's point of view was refreshing and interesting. I like how the series is based on the real-life adventures of Mary Ann Kinsinger.
My favorite scene in the book is when Lily's Grandma Miller shows her how to make the Lily of the Valley flower change colors and compares it to the making of friends. A wonderful lesson for kids and adults.
Life with Lily is a perfect read-aloud book for your younger kids especially those interested in the Amish life.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2015Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI bought this for my 9 year old daughter, a voracious reader. She loved the whole series and read each book and sat waiting at the mailbox for the next one. When she finished the books, she shared it with her Amish girlfriends across the road, and all of our Amish neighbors enjoyed the books well, even the dad read them and laughed in the kerosene lamplight at the schemes Lily cooks up. I give it four stars because I prefer books with less narration and more dialogue. But perhaps the storyline is more authentic this way.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLily Lapp is five years old and growing up on a small Amish farm in upstate New York. She has a four year old brother, Joseph, and her mother just had a new baby, Dannie. Lily helps to plant the garden, thrills over a new cow and chickens given to her mama for Christmas and worries when her brother tries to fly and breaks an arm.
Lily thinks she knows everything at five years old, after all, she's the big sister, but she still has lots to discover--such as the creature with a bushy tail hiding in the barn isn't really a kitten and even though neighbors seem gruff, there are nice things to be said about them.
Tween girls will love this new series starring Lily, watching and learning with her what it is like to grow up on an Amish farm.
LIFE WITH LILY is the first book of four written about Lily. My ten year old daughter snagged it the day it came in the mail and read it start to finish in two days. The review, in my daughter's words: Lily is very mischievous and she's very fun and she does a lot of silly things, but she tries to keep out of trouble.
My daughter enjoyed the book very much and says she's putting this book on her keeper shelf. Pick up copy of LIFE WITH LILY for your favorite tweener today.
As an adult, I didn't find much of a plot or storyline, it was just a collection of stories. Charming for children, or for those who want to know what an Amish child does.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe adventures of Lily Lapp: Book One, Life with Lily by Mary Ann Kinsinger and Suzanne Woods Fisher
This first book of a series begins with five year old Lily Lapp and her little brother Joseph being awakened by her Papa to leave home in the middle of the night. She had no idea that her Mama would have another baby boy that night since Amish families didn’t discuss pregnancy with children. Grandma and Grandpa Miller were glad to have visit for the night.
A small Amish girl’s experiences in a country setting would be an excellent book to read portions at bedtime to your children or grandchildren. Lily’s adventures covered numerous subjects of interest. One thing I’d like to see in the book is just a little more anticipation, mystery or drama, but it is a well-written story. I was given a Kindle version of the book for my honest opinion.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy 7 year old is reading this book, she hasn't finished it yet, but is enjoying it. It is a gentle book about the Amish way of life, from a child's point of view, which she knows a bit about as we used to live on the edge of Amish country. It may not be something every child can relate too, but a little research on the internet should tell them as much as they need to know. Then they can just add imagination.
