I am going to blatantly copy from H in posting this: "I'm not going anywhere. I know some of you are moving/considering moving elsewhere, and I hope you will consider carefully before making decisions. LJ was targeted because it allows freedom of speech for people still in restricted areas. A DDoS attack is not the same as a poorly-maintained server, or anything that can realistically be prevented any more than you can prevent someone running into the back of your car. You do the best you can to create a good, safe setup, but after that your actions are limited. LJ provides a good service for me, and I like the communities here which let all of us connect. "
I deleted my facebook account because of their egregious and repeated privacy violations. Leaving LJ would feel like a betrayal of a service that allows freedom of speech where none would otherwise exist.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.
As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:
"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."
So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.
Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

"Gurtive", adjective, of the facial or body expression when one catches a person or pet doing something you know they know they should not. "When I caught Ari walking on the piano, he scuttled off in a very gurtive manner".
Portmanteau of "guilty" and "furtive".

If a friend asked you for some new music recommendations, what would you suggest?
Go to www.jamendo.com and listen to legally downloadable music licenced under the Creative Commons licence :)
I am a bit of a cheese head. I like most cheeses - don't like blue or "stinky" cheeses, but most others will happily slide over my palate. I consider "Velveeta" in the same category as Bud/Miller/Coors.
Because I am a cheese head and a foodie, I bought a cheese making kit, which arrived this week. Because I knew I was going to buy this kit, I have been reading up a lot on the subject.... as you would expect!
Sadly, the FDA is using unsupervised powers to actively interfere with people's ability to buy raw milk for personal consumption... or, in my case, to make cheese. USians have never had an authentic Roquefort cheese, because the FDA mandates that it be pasteurised. Unfortunately most USians are to cheese as are the USians who say "we have all the beers!" meaning Bud/Miller/Coors :-/
There is a bill in the US Congress that would address this, and allow individual consumers to buy raw milk where state law does not prohibit such a sale. I support it, because I would like to have the *choice*. It will also allow small dairy farms to bring in another income stream which, let's face it, is only a good thing!
If you are a USian, please contact your Congress(wo)(man), and express support for HR778 :)

There's a buttermilk blue cheese sold in Earth Fare that is amazing - sweet and tart with blue cheese funk. Try it with a good farmhouse ale or a Saison :)
