| Raid 5 Question |
[12 Feb 2009|02:01am] |
I just bought 2 750 GB WD hard drives for a RAID 5 array. My problem is that the two new drives are WD7500AACS hard drives. 750GB 3.0 Gb Sata 16MB , BUT they're 5400 to 7200rpm. My third drive for the array is a WD 750GB WD7500AAKS, which is 3.0 Gb Sata, 16MB, BUT it's 7200rpm only.
Does anyone know if I'll have issues using this drive or should I just buy another "Eco Drive" of the AACS variety?

Anyone still around this community?
I have recently acquired many notebooks with the same make and model. I have also in my possession many notebook hard drives of the same make/model. I would like to install Windows XP and various other programs onto one notebook, ghost the hd when I have everything the way I want and all the programs I want, and restore the ghost images to the other systems.
However, I'd like this to be as easy as possible. Specifically I'd like to just initialize the image restore and then come back in a couple hours to a fully-functional system. There are a couple issues with this (maybe more, I'm not sure yet :P).
First is re-establishing the MBR of the newly recovered system. Second is activating the newly created partition with the OS. Both of these tasks are easily done with something like fdisk, but this requires that I have a separate boot disk, and I have to push extra buttons to get my system running. I know this seems like a trivial task, but I'm just wondering if I can streamline ghost to restore the images, re-establish the MBR, and activate the partition all in one go. A fool-proof system clone, if you will.
I've discovered that Norton Ghost comes with an fdisk-like program called gdisk, which can re-establish the MBR and activate partitions in a single command. However the issue is automating the execution of such commands after the image restorations. I plan to burn all the images to a dual-layer DVD, so I won't have to come back every 30 minutes or so to switch disks.
Anyone have any ideas? Sorry this post was so redundant, I'm trying to be as descriptive and specific as possible to avoid confusion.

Can anyone recommend a program to test memory? I found memtest86, but I'd appreciate comments or experiences. Thanks.

| viruses |
[20 Jun 2005|02:51pm] |
I have re-evaluated my position towards computer viruses. While computer hardware approaches the complexity of a human brain (the latest supercomputer is capable of 200,000,000,000,000 op/s), the software is lagging behind miserably. We have recursive algorithms, neural nets, genetic programming, swarm intelligence and so on, but the AI field is unable to produce a program as complex as a fly. Let's compare simple one-cell organisms, such as amoebas, to modern computer viruses and worms. Do you see any similarities? It was amoeba that had gradually evolved into multicell clusters, which in turn gave birth to the simplest worms and insects. I see operating systems and internet as a perfect enviroment for similar evolution. Antivirus programs provide the necessary natural selection, so an effective virus must make more and more decisions to survive on your machine and to replicate itself. Who knows, maybe the next civilization on this planet will have its roots in modern trojans, spiders, RAT botnets, spamware and viruses.

| OpenBSD routerboxes.. |
[04 Nov 2004|06:24pm] |
This weekend I am setting up an {ADSL/firewall/mailserver} box for someone. Normally I'd just zap them up a debian box, but I am thinking of using openBSD for this one as it's surely the choice of OS for facing off against the 'net.
Now I have used openBSD before (its languishing on my SPARC20) but I've never really used it for this kinda thing. Anyone got any advice/experience with setting up openBSD, on an X86 machine using a USB speedtouch? Any pitfalls or advice?

wikipedia is inherently flawed.
no, i'm not against open content submission. not at all. but learning simply isn't a static process. the encyclopedia's of times past were fucking wondrous, and one could get many a fact (if there is such a thing) from them. however, one could not instruct one's self from an encyclopedia. learning and teaching one's self are very different: learning requires only information in a static form, teaching one's self, on the other hand, requires interaction with information. the ability to manipulate it, to have it explained in various ways, to dispute it, even to discuss it with other individuals. wikipedia will be a useful project, no doubt: the wealth of knowledge there is immense, and i myself use it on a nearly daily basis.
i envision something greater. a site where one may submit as one wishes, yes, like wikipedia. however, i envision a site where the product of chat, forums, blogs and divers other sorts of structured (or semi-structured) information can be combined. more than a site where one can edit any of the contents, but rather a community of learners who help each other. if one knew some subject well, or had mastered a skill, one would provide a means of instruction for others who wished to learn it. if one desired to learn a skill, the other who could do so would help. nevermind the concept of everyone helping each other in real life, or with getting food or somesuch, i won't delve into politics. i intend to make a very simple statement:
knowledge should be free.
i leave it up to each individual to determine how to distribute the knowledge best, but i implore you to question what we have available. any single bit may be damn good -- but is it excellent? is there room for improvement? if so, can you make the improvement? if so, make it, if you can't, facilitate it. this is the hacker ethic as i see it.

| direct tv |
[16 Aug 2004|05:24pm] |
Wow ok long time since I've posted here although i was a member back when noprofile started this, btw nice to have you back man. Anyway...
I moved into a new apartment and part of the complex is direct TV in every apartment, all you gotta do is call Direct TV and have em activate your account. Obviously I haven't done that yet. So i got 3 direct TV boxes and 3 P4 Access Cards. As of now I don't think there is a hack to get this to work, I did some looking around on the web and all I find are some site claiming to have a fix but charging a ridiculous amount of money for it, pisses me off to see that. I did read a little tidbit somewhere about hooking your dtv box up to a linux machine and then running the P4 card in emulation, but don't know if that actually works or not. I would be interested in investing time and money into getting the hardware to do read/writing of these cards if anybody is willing to work with me on this.
I have no plans to try to market this to people and make money off of it. I am purely interested in this because I am a big fan of hacking electronics and never really done much with Direct TV. If you ever done this type of thing before or wanna work with me on this my email is turi_vodka@yahoo.com

OK, i'm using a program called "Aim Robber," and I don't know what to do. The readme tells me to upload two included files to a web server that supports PHP. One of the files is called "logger.php" and one is called "log.html." It then says "After you upload the two files, you will need to CHMODE 'log.html' to 7777."
I just put the two files on a Geocities site, will that work?
Also, what is CHMODE?

So I was running around on google trying to find somewhere to download some of the older naruto (anime) episodes and I came accross this site: www.kragamuffin.com then I noticed that they have a private download section, then I decided that a site such as thing probably doesn't have real high security protection, I was mucking around with http://kragamuffin.com/private/download.html and haven't really come up with anything significant. Ideas?

I have a question My friend(?) has a website, it's luznilla.pochta.ru when you go to that website it just redirects you to some crap, but if you type in luznilla.pochta.ru/house.jpg it brings you to a file. I've tried site downloading utilities and I get nothing, basically I'm trying to get the files on that site. I have no intention of "hacking" it, i just wanna see the rest of the pics.
