Gout Education Society
The Gout Education Society is a nonprofit organization of healthcare professionals dedicated to raising awareness of gouty arthritis, with the goal of improving the overall quality of care and minimizing the burden of gout.
Let's Be Crystal Clear About Gout Management
Gout sufferers and their healthcare providers need to have open, honest conversations about gout. In other words, they need to be “crystal clear” about symptoms, concerns, and treatment options to ensure the best possible patient experience and medical outcome.
To improve communication between individuals with gout and healthcare providers, we’ve developed the Crystal Clear Checklist, which helps monitor key health benchmarks, track flares, and maximize the benefits of doctor visits.
What is Gout?
Gout is one of the most common forms of arthritis, caused by high levels of uric acid and the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints. If gout is left untreated, it increases the risk of permanent bone, joint, and tissue damage. An attack of gout will cause pain and swelling that lasts longer if left untreated.

Treat Gout Early to Avoid Joint Damage and Tophi
Today, more than 9.2 million Americans are living with gout, a number that is only increasing. However, many are unaware of their family history of gout, and just 10 percent of people with gout are getting adequate, ongoing treatment.
Gout is Serious
It’s important to know that during a gout attack, a person experiences sudden and severe episodes of pain, warmth, and swelling in one or more joints.
While gout symptoms often begin in the big toe, a gout attack can spread to the feet, ankle, wrists, hands, and elbows and cause permanent joint damage.
