first day of real snow this year. i do love the snow. or rather, i love it for the first part of winter. my tolerance for it is higher than others' (read: my dad), but at least until my birthday, i'm usually happy when it snows. after that its just depressing.

i've been programming a lot lately. been doing a few things that are pretty cool, though time consuming, and wondering if i should post my stuff somewhere to maybe help someone else when they run into the obstacles that i've been running in to. written a few custom controls for things like text formatting. the standard windows .net rich edit control is seriously lacking in features. sucks ass.

also, i'm an uncle! pictures of my niece over here. she's adorable. gotta get more pics of her up. just have to remember to actually take the camera when we go to visit....heh.

its snowing and i'm driking coffee and its all very mellow and warm and nice.

ick. i've got my yearly cold. i'm such a miserable bastard when i'm sick.

got a coffee maker this weekend. haven't had one before. just had this huge craving for coffee that didn't cost $5/cup

sqlserver 2005 is pretty cool. can't believe i've come around to MS products.

it is truly amazing how we've convinced ourselves of our superiority as humans. our arrogance as a culture knows no bounds.

...

wow, random stuff. blame it on the head cold...

yesterday, angela said, 'one week until my due date!', and i was struck by just how fast these past 9 months have flown. she is VERY pregnant. the thought that my brothers and i will soon be uncles is rather strange. course, dancer will be an aunt, and mom and dad will be grandparents, so i'm sure its strange to everyone. i know this stuff happens all the time, but now that its happening for the first time to our immediate family it is predictably novel.

hope i'm a good uncle. non-immediate family relations can be weird sometimes....heh, as if immediate family relations are always completely normal. though most people talk of a close aunt/uncle/grand parent, so perhaps there is hope.

today is sunny and cold. just like a good fall day should be.

As my brother, Imageebola_elvis, pointed out, its been 71 weeks since i've written anything here. Guess i just lost interest. Or perhaps i felt that what i'd been writing down here was more for the benefit of others than myself, which just felt weird.

Regardless, time and distance have brought a fresh perspective, which is always to the good.

It is voting day...again. I tend to get a little pondersome/morose around voting day. Not because i don't vote, but because i tend to feel like there should be...'more'...ergh. Not more voting, just more general good will, less hate, more understanding, less pettiness, more regard, less angst, more personal responsibility, etc, etc.

Anyway, today is what it is. May wisdom guide those that choose to vote today.

Gentoo and Gnome [Mar. 12th, 2004|12:10 pm]

My main computer died the other day. The primary hard drive started clicking....usually the death knell of any hard drive. I turned it off immediately and haven't turned it back on yet. I ordered another drive which should be here today. Then I can re-install everything on that drive and plug in the other drive and see what, if anything, i can recover.

If I can't recover anything, then I've just lost the past 3 months of work.

On the up swing, i've been using my secondary linux boxen (compliments of dano. thanks dan!) which i have been setting up with Gentoo and Gnome and all the various little apps that make linux so much fun. I've got to say that as a desktop system goes, i am VERY impressed. I've been able to do just about everything i was doing before, with the exception of DVD burning cause the burner is in the other computer, and its been fun! It's a bit sluggish loading bigger apps, but it is definitely usable as a work or play system.

New hard drive just arrived!

long drive [Mar. 11th, 2004|03:59 pm]

this morning i drove an hour each way to an estimate for window shades. doing things like that always makes me think about the realvence of so many of the things i do on a daily basis. or better, how much of what i do day to day is really meaningless.

yesterday was a window treatment day. i drove around and hung up window treatments for people. normally i don't mind installing them...they're easy and i can think about pretty much anything while i'm doing it. on my second job of the day however i was reminded again, why by and large, most people suck.

i arrived a little late because my first job ran over and had tried to call him on my cell phone to tell him i'd be a few minutes late. cell phone didn't get reception. never does. i could hear him, but he couldn't hear me. fine. fucking phone anyway. i show up and he ushers me in as i'm making my apologies all nice and everything, but he barely says hi to me. from then on he ignored me like i wasn't there the entire time...even when i was in the same room as him. that irked me. what really got under my skin though was that as soon as i showed up and got started he went over to the stereo and put on a Luthor Vandros CD and cranked up the volume. and sang! and hummed. and whistled. besides the fact that Luthor Vandros has no muscial talent whatsoever (i KNOW, i had to listen to the CD twice!) and this guys taste in music is stuck somewhere back in '86, the ignoring me and blasting music, any music, while i'm there working was just plain rude.

my last job of the day, however, was for some very nice people. he was English and she was very nice and the job went all smooth and slick, just the way i like it.

the point though is how much time do i 'waste' dealing with fuckers like the guy from job number 2? the anwser is WAY too much time. how can anyone else stand it? why do we treat each other like shit all the time? blah..really starting to bother me more and more these days....why perfect strangers would feel like it was ok to be rude and inconsiderate instead of respectful and helpful to each other.

i want to know nice people. mean people just stress me out too much.

i'm not a large Bowie fan, but i simply couldn't resist indulging a bit when it came time to give my laptop a name on the network. my desktop computer's name is the same as my handle: groundctrl. so naturally, i had to dub my laptop: majortom.

brings a smile to my face evey time i boot up :)

a few towns over from mine there is a fellow who has an odd past time. his mailbox out by the side of the road is held up by the outstretched arms of a pig. not a real pig obviously, nor a very acurate pig, but a pig none the less. the pig stands about 4 feet tall on its back legs, holds the mailbox out straight in front of it and doesn't appear to have any remarkable features in look or style except one. every week or so, the owner of the pig mailbox dresses his pig in a new garment. last week when i drove by, the pig was wearing a full bridal dress. before that, a bikini. i think perhaps the most disturbing outfit i've seen on the pig was last fall's going back to school catholic school child uniform.

there are many reasons that i'm not completely happy living where i am, but a few things certainly do bring a smile to my face when i see them. the pig mailbox is one of them.
