Valentines day is coming up, and on that note I wanted to do an entry on this painting I made three years ago... It's scary when I think that's already been three years since I did this. I need to get the oils out again sometime, and see if I can do beter. I can see all my mistakes in the painting, but it's still my favorite from the class, it's the one I feel I put the most into. Mainly because it was of my Mere-mere and me... Sort of. Seems I'm still on a nostalgia kick, but evey time I see this little slice, I can't help but smile.

12:07 pm - Nostalgia Meme
I want to go shoot pool. I want a martini, "dry and disgustingly dirty." And I'd love to hear what's going on in Bob's life. Bob, aka Skoob, kind of treated me like a kid brother when I first got to A&M, and having two older brothers of my own and being a away from home, that was just what I needed. Even after five years, I wonder about him.

1) Ross aka Imagegutierrez misses Bob aka Skoob.

---

So let's do this up right. It's near the Holidays, a time for reflection on friends and family. Is there anyone/anything you're missing? Sappy, serious or silly. Just give us a little description (no need to keep mine) and add yourself to the list (please do keep that.) Why the list? If you happen to be or know that certain someone we're looking for, maybe you could grant our wishes to hear from you/them.

Halloween was interesting this year. I went as the same thing I went as last year, a Nazgul. I love the costume, and especially loved making the gloves< for it. So wearing it again was fun. I think I may try something else next year, though, if i can pull it all together. I went to work in costume for the day to attend the department party that afternoon. I was told I looked good, got a few laughs, and had people with camera phones snapping pictures of that scary guy fixing the printers. One person even went so far as to ask me to go to Google and search "Frodo" leading me to FrodoForever.com. He then snapped a photo of me at the site and said, "See? Who needs a demon horse? Google For The Win!"

Then right before the party a new professor sees me and begins screaming. "Why are you dressed like that? Why would anyone dress like that? You are scary! You are evil! How dare you dress like that! You are out to get me! This is very dispectful to me! In my country no one would every wear something like that! I am going to write a letter to the Battalion about you!" It was surreal to be yelled at by this man in a halloween costume, you were encouraged to wear minutes before a party you'd been looking forward to. Even stranger was the steady stream of people that kept thanking me for scaring him, and telling me it was awesome to watch me get reamed by the man. Each coming to see what I looked like or stopping me as I went about my work for the day.

I had one class for the day, and I attended in cotsume. The student who sits in front of me moved after getting a glimpse of me. The professor came in, and began to lecture. Then actually looked at the class and saw me sitting in the back. The lecture stopped, and he went to the board, where a flower garland had been hanging all semester, took it down, walked over to me, and put it around my neck saying, "There, that's better." He then went back to the board and continued on with class.

3:38 pm - To the Airport!

Image  Image  Image

Well it's conference time again! That's right, on Monday I fly to California and drive to Santa Barbara to demo my thesis project. I'll be there all week, sitting through talks, demoing, and trying to sneak away to get some sun. Then it's back home on Friday. Anyone know any good stops there? Any suggestions for gift hunting or places to have fun? I know I had a great time just having a shrimp burger with Imageaustin_dern on the other side of the globe last year, maybe I'll get just as lucky this year in CA.

---

Just another nod to the country: Singapore was amazing. A great visit I hope to repeat again in my life.

Thank you for dragging my draggy-butt around town that evening, Austin. I really did have a nice time just walking and talking wit-cha.

We have a new addition to our home! His name is Oberon. Hey, it was his name at the shelter, who am I to change it? Mere and I have been arguing over what type of dog we would want to have in our home for quite some time now. She wants a Chihuahua like her families dog Chica, and I want a chow like my old dog Malcolm. So we agreed to disagree and get a cat. Strangely enough he plays fetch... That's right, if you're sitting on the couch long enough, expect kitty to bring you one of his toys to throw for him. But otherwise he's a normal kitten: purring and sleeping in your arms one minute, biting and kicking your arm the next. We love him.

The house is coming along nicely, pictures to come when more boxes are unpacked!

12:09 am - I Love Watching My House (The Construction, not the Medical Drama)

Image

It's happening, we're getting a house! I mean, house. Originally we were going with a national builder. We had a certain house budget in mind, and they of course directed us to one right above our number. We bit. Then invited our parents in. Okay having a former realtor and a real estate tax agent with you gives you a lot of extra insight. It was nice to have them, until they really bashed the house we liked. Then again, that got us to build. As we were driving around, we passed a house we knew to be the same price, but hadn't been considering (though I have no idea why [see third picture for details]). We walk in and all four parents stop. My father says, "If you think this house is the same price, you're sorely mistaken." So we fetch the flier, and both our fathers tell us seperately to start paperwork now. So here we are hunting for mortgages, worrying about budgets, and picking out carpet. They let me pick out where I want to place outlets in the house, bliss from being able to put ethernet in every room, and then centralize it in a steel closet case!

Okay, I'm still stuck on the fact I played with a cat with thumbs in Louisiana.
And once Mere and I can settle on three favorites, wedding photos...

Spring Break 2006, New Orleans, LA: What to Say?

I had spent spring break in New Orleans working on my thesis as well as with The Common Ground Collective. It's an awesome group. They projected over 1000 college students coming in to help them. As you can see from all the people lying around at just one location, I think this may just happen. Summarizing this trip is not going to work, for only being there a few days there is too much to tell. I took over 250 images of the city from Lakeview to the Lower 9th. Words don't cover what the city is like in some areas, even all these months later. As of right now I'm working on software to organize the images, and once I have publication I'll release it to show you all. The name for the project is ZooMICSS: Zoomable Map Image Collection Sensemaking System. But enough about that, it's time for a story.

I went to the Voodoo Spiritual Temple on the trip and had the oppertunity to speak with Priestess Miriam. She's is such a sweet woman, very kind and very wise. As odd as this may sound, she reminded me a lot of my own grandmother. During the time we were speaking I asked if she might want or need anything. She thought a moment and then said, "A Chicken." Me being who I am, and not thinking about things as much as I should, replied, "Oh! There is a little herd of wild chickens where we are staying." Her eyes lit up, she clapped her hands together, "Could you bring me one? I haven't had a chicken since before the hurricane." So there I was, set to get a chicken for a Voodoo Priestess. I couldn't say no, she was too nice.

So a man, a chicken, and a Voodoo Priestess walk into a souvenier shop...Collapse )

Flashback: Honeymoon, Shore Excursion, Sled Dog Camp

While this wasn't my favorite shore excursion of the crusie (Snorkeling was, photos exist), there was really nothing bad about any of the excursions. This was a fun trip. Even the bus ride up was entertaining. Our driver gave us a special tour of Skagway. The tour involved mostly bashing the town, and then trying to recruit Mere and I to join him working summers there since we were the only people his age on the bus. It was a refreshing departure from the other bus drivers with the plastic smiles and canned speeches. Let off at the camp we walked from a valley of wildflowers into the Alaskan rainforest and from thier hauled up a hill to our teams. The sleds were steel with all terrain tires and seated six adults and a driver. This made the ride even more amazing as the dogs pulled a full sled, and could really move. These dogs were build to move, and fast. If you expected to see a pack of Siberian Huskies sorry to dissapoint. Our driver, an experienced racer, told us that Siberians were too bulky to fit the entire bill for the team. The actual dogs he races with are all of mixed breed, and dubbed "Alaskan Huskies." Still my favorite moment of the trip came when he was describing the race: "So after a few days without food and sleep, you start to hallucinate...", he pauses looking off into space making the oddest face for several seconds, "... ... Uhm. Hallucinations are bad." He then dropped the subject of the race altogether. I knew he was strong, had a heck of a lot of stamina, but every time he'd reference his beer gut as, "Bulking up for the races", I lost a little faith in the sport. At least all the crews were laid back, and dogs were all massively cute and extremely friendly. And I couldn't pass up watching my cute new wife play with almost as cute puppies. You can never have enough of that. The little white puppy Meredith is holding in the pictures was one of three lying asleep in the warmth of the camp fires. We didn't want to disturb them at first, but then the driver turned and smiled at us, "Hey, even the dogs have to earn thier keep. Go ahead and pick them up." So we did, taking turns taking photos of each other or grabbing someone to take pictures of us. Still, my favorite dogs was one of the older lead dogs from the camp. I just liked the way he looked, though I'm not sure they were as happy I was messing with one of thier top dogs. As we were leaving, he followed me to the end of his leash and then grabbed onto my leg with his paws and whined. Such a sweet dog.

I think this format of three thumbnailed sections leading to full images with the entry below is not too shabby, I think it will be my entry format from now on. This if just a filler entry, two photos from my trip to Singapore, one from my Honeymoon with Mere mere. I went to the National Orchid Garden and Jurong Birdpark. The honeymoon picture stars the Mendenhall glacier, with my lovely wife and myself as supporting cast. In any case a have a stack of Orchid photos, (all pretty decent like the one above) some fun bird pictures, and some Honeymoon documentary in Alaska which includes cute sled dog puppies and in lieu of anythign better to post I'm willing to share if anyone has a preference.

7:10 pm - Nightmare: A red wet mess... (Scary Anagram of: Sweet dreams)

It was the usual dream until it turned bad. A majority of what I see when I'm sleeping is just me doing something every day. In this case I was going to The Express, a gas station mini-mart, to get some snacks. They had my favorite Molasses Cookies, which are no longer in production by Frito Lay, in 3 packs. I was grabbing them all off the shelves to stock up since I haven't seen them in forever. Another odd item I noticed on the shelves was a special type of cinnamon roll, horseradish spice flavor. All that aside I was going to see GibsonFox at his apartment. I was just going ot see how he was bearing tasty stuffs, maybe watch a movie. As I got into his group of apartments his door was open, doormat to the side. As I walked in I was nowhere prepared for what I saw... Words fail me for the horrible manner in which Gibson was left, dead, lying in the corner. There, totally eviscerated, staring up at me. I woke up frantically dialing 911 on a phantom phone. After that, I couldn't get back to sleep...

What does this scary mess mean?

Well, I have been trying to figure out how Jim is, and just found out today that he's around, just incognito. Why the dream was so messed up in the end? No clue. As long as that's just all in my head, which it was, i'll just have to chalk it up to my body telling my brain I really needed to wake up for some reason or another. Did finally get me to ask someone about him, though.

It took a little while longer to find the time, but last night around 10:00pm (Hence the blasphemous buddies), I got to cook the previously mentioned Shrimp and Soup. If you want any recipes, like the real thing for strawberry soup, let me know. Other than that I'm just getting ready for another day of TA'ing.

7:26 pm - Gifts that keep on giving
Image

For Christmas, one of my friends Trina gave us a simple present an Amaryllis kit, mind you not as expensive as the linked one, but the same bulb all around. It has just started to flower and I just thought I'd share a quick snapshot of it. It was on a half second exposure taken by hand, that's where all the blur is from... But you know, I kind of like the blur with the bright coloring. Now if only I could get up wedding photos and Singapore Photos we'd be in business. Any suggestions of where to get a good deal of space to stick them?

1:45 pm - Name that breakfast!
Image

I've been on a bit of a cooking spree recently, good ingredients have been cheap at the local HEB. Last night was steak night with angus new york strip, peas with mushroom and herb sauce, and garlic and chive mashed potatoes. The breakfast pictured above is today's big meal. Tomorrow's big meal will be colossal gulf shrimp, with a starter of wonderful Chilled Strawberry soup from my cruise cookbook. Still need a vegetable side, if there are any suggestions.

QUIZ: The breakfast pictured above is the favorite of someone else. Can you name the character, and where he appears?

2:03 pm - Getting there is half the fun
"Here's what to do if you want to get a lift from a Vogon: forget it. They are one of the most unpleasant races in the galaxy. Not actually evil, but bad tempered, bureaucratic, officious and callous. They wouldn't even lift a finger to save their own grandmothers from the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal without orders signed in triplicate, sent in, sent back, queried, lost, found, subjected to public enquiry, lost again, and finally buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as firelighters. The best way to get a drink out of a Vogon is stick your finger down his throat, and the best way to irritate him is to feed his grandmother to the ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. On no account allow a Vogon to read poetry at you.", Wikipedia Vogon

Alright, so I applied for my Passport. I payed the extra $60 for expidited service, normal service takes 6 weeks to process. Where they promise "about two weeks" for the return of your passport. I had two and a half from the date a applied to when I travel (news soon on that front.) A chance, I know. But I thought, "I can keep track of it, get the postal tracking number and they have an information line." Apparently I forgot how the government works. The web description should be ammended to read, "Once you have paid to overnight your package to us, we will lose track of your application totally and completely. You won't be able to find anything out about it, not a sausage. Even if you call our help line, we won't know anything about your application. Though the post office will attest to the fact we recieved your application the day after you sent it, we will ignore the package for a period of no less than ten days, just to be safe. Our only consolation for you will be that you can check your bank account to see if we've cashed your check yet. Then you might have a clue as to when we actually start to care. Once we do dig your records up, it takes at least another three days to be processed. Be sure to call back and make sure we didn't lose it again after this period. Oh, and by the way, expidited service with overnight mail does not include us overnighting your passport back to you. That will cost you extra. If you don't know about it, and forget to ask. It's your fault." Anyways, enough of that. They found it today, and I should expect it Wednesday or Thursday. Just as long as I see it by Friday. I leave that morning.

2:45 pm - Getting my thesis on
Alright, so it took long enough, but my graduate thesis is finally on track, all I can say is it involves taking pictures for now. Once I'm out and published I'll be able to babble on about it. In any case, I've been making progress and that's made a lot of things look up. Not to mention since 'm making a major component of it part of a class project I have to make progress on it. I find I always work much better when I work in a group and with a structure to my deliverables.

My other project has yet to take off, though I do know what I'm doing. I'm using pyroelectric sensors to drive a Pan/Tilt/Zoom Camera. It's a scary idea, but it was one of the recommended projects to create software for automating or teleoperating the robotic camera. I want sense heat and motion and direct the camera to track such bodies in a room. I'll be basing my work off of our professors work in teleoperated cameras. But my professor is better known for his work on Ghost Rider, the totally autonamous motorcycle, which is running the DARPA Grand Challenge. In any case the class is cool stuff. And I'll post later on my progress.

"Windy at times with a 50% chance of rain. Humid. Low near 75F. WSW winds at 40 to 60 mph. Rainfall may be more than one inch."

Windy seems a bit euphamistic when you're talking 40 to 60mph winds...
