About the challenge
This event is in collaboration with Microsoft and will be centered around the Azure cloud. Students will be presented with various scenarios and will pick a scenario to “solve” and pitch to Microsoft and the Judges Team. Each team will have the opportunity to connect with Azure technical specialists and will be guided throughout the entirety of the hackathon.
Welcome participants to our hackathon focused on creating solutions that make a positive impact on the world! You have the opportunity to contribute to change in various categories such as
-
Social Justice & Equity
-
Gender Equality
-
Accessibility
-
Racial Equality
-
Sustainability
-
Waste Management
-
Climate Action

Requirements
What to Build
The participants have 2 options:
Option 1: Architecture Diagram Challenge
Your task is to design a comprehensive architecture diagram using Azure services to address a specific problem within one of the mentioned categories. Whether it's creating an innovative solution for waste management or designing a system that promotes financial inclusion, your architecture should be well-thought-out, scalable, and efficient.
Consider the following points when designing your architecture:
- Identify the key challenges in your chosen category.
- Choose Azure services that align with the requirements of your solution.
- Illustrate how data flows within the system and highlight any AI/ML components.
- Ensure your architecture promotes security, scalability, and reliability.
Option 2: Platform Development Challenge
Alternatively, you can choose to code a platform that addresses challenges within the specified categories. Build a functional, user-friendly platform that actively contributes to positive change. This could be a web application, mobile app, or any other platform that aligns with the chosen category. It is mandatory to use at least one Azure service in your solution.
Some guidelines for this challenge:
- Clearly define the problem you are solving within the chosen category.
- Develop a user interface that is intuitive and accessible.
- Implement features that enhance user engagement and experience.
- Leverage Azure services to enhance the functionality of your platform.
- Consider the scalability and sustainability of your solution.
What to Submit
To facilitate a comprehensive evaluation process, everyone needs to submit their final projects on Devpost. Please adhere to the following submission guidelines based on the challenge you've chosen:
Option 1: Architecture Diagram Challenge
-
Presentation: Create a presentation deck that includes:
- Title Slide: Project Name and Team Members
- Problem Statement: Clearly define the problem within your chosen category.
- Azure Services Integration: Illustrate and explain the Azure services integrated into your architecture.
- Comprehensive Diagram: Showcase the detailed architecture diagram with clear annotations.
- Design Rationale: Provide a brief written explanation of your design choices and how they address challenges.
- Cost Analysis: Provide a breakdown of the estimated costs associated with each Azure service used in your architecture. Justify your choice of each Azure service based on its cost-effectiveness. Consider aspects such as usage patterns, data volume, and any potential cost-saving measures implemented.
- Innovation: Highlight any innovative features or approaches.
-
Video (Optional): You may create a video (not exceeding 2 minutes) to walk through your presentation, explaining key points or showcasing the architecture visually.
-
Submission: Share the presentation and video link with us via Devpost by 8:00 am on February 4th, 2024 (Sunday).
Option 2: Platform Development Challenge
-
GitHub Repository: Submit the link to your GitHub repository, ensuring it includes:
- Codebase: Well-organized and documented code implementing your platform.
- README File: A detailed README.md file providing instructions for setting up, running, and understanding your code.
- Azure Service Usage: Mention the Azure service(s) utilized and their role in the project.
-
Presentation (Optional): Create a short presentation (not exceeding 10 slides) covering:
- Title Slide: Project Name and Team Members
- Inspiration: Share insights into what inspired your project within the chosen category.
- Coding Journey: Briefly discuss your coding journey, challenges faced, and lessons learned.
- Learnings: Highlight any key technical or non-technical learnings gained during the development process.
-
Demo Video (Optional): You may include a video (not exceeding 5 minutes) demonstrating a working model of your platform's features and functionality.
-
Submission: Share the GitHub repository link and presentation materials with us via Devpost by 8:00 am on February 4th, 2024 (Sunday).
General Submission Notes:
- Ensure all materials are easily accessible and well-labeled.
- Respect any specified time limits for videos or presentations.
