UC Water Prize
Everyone has the right to know what is in their water. One of the biggest challenges we face in California water management and education is not knowing enough about the quality of our water resources. Nitrates and arsenic present human health risks. Understanding the water report is a challenge and puts more people at risk. Some data sets are available, but are difficult to understand. The job here is to make water (data) crystal clear and safe to drink.
UC Water Security and Sustainability Research Initiative and the Community Water Center have partnered to present a joint issue on water quality.
Specifications
This is a community environmental and social justice project. It will serve the Community Water Center, a non-profit organization, and the people in need of better water information.
1. Because some rural or economically disadvantaged people do not have computers, but have smartphones, mobile is a bonus.
2. Focus on Tulare County and/or Kern County (in the southern San Joaquin Valley).
3. Focus on arsenic and/or nitrates.
4. Try to make the data into clear information.
Useful paths in this Hack
We are looking for something that shows where, when, or to what degree a community’s water has been polluted. But the way you show it is up to you. Don’t let the data hold you up though. You can use a small set of the data to show how your product could work.
