Sunday Reflection -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Image

There are many ways to honor Dr. King tomorrow through acts of service in your community.  It's also easy to find local calendars of events (parades, seminars, etc.) on the Internet, or head to your local library and see what they have to offer on Dr. King's life and legacy.

We're also firm believers in the quote, "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice," which Dr. King borrowed from 19th Century abolitionist Theodore Parker.  It doesn't happen through "apathy or complacency," but through "vigorous and positive action," as Dr. King said.  It's called "good trouble."

QOTD: "Upholding Our Sovereignty"

A joint statement by the eight NATO allies* responding to the blackmail threats by the criminal Malignant Fascist, attempting to extort these nations into supporting his imperial land grab of Greenland by raising tariffs against them:

“As members of NATO, we are committed to strengthening Arctic security as a shared transatlantic interest. The pre-coordinated Danish exercise ‘Arctic Endurance,’ conducted with Allies, responds to this necessity. It poses no threat to anyone.

We stand in full solidarity with the Kingdom of Denmark and the people of Greenland. Building on the process begun last week, we stand ready to engage in a dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity that we stand firmly behind. Tariff threats undermine transatlantic relations and risk a dangerous downward spiral. We will continue to stand united and coordinated in our response. We are committed to upholding our sovereignty.”

It's almost unreal that our closest allies would have to warn us about violating the sovereignty of one of them.  This move against Greenland and Denmark by the deranged, out-of-control MF isn't about a "Golden Dome" defense system, or fending off attacks by Russia or China, or our "national security." The U.S. has freedom to open military facilities under a treaty that was signed in the middle of the last century.  It's about exploiting Greenland's natural resources, including rare earth minerals, oil and gas and other valuable assets, that the MF would parcel out to his oligarch friends and donors (while keeping a cut for himself, you can bet).  As we pointed out yesterday, the Kremlin and Beijing are celebrating this ominous rift in an alliance that they've wanted to destroy for decades.

ICE And The Proud Boys

Amanda Marcotte, writing in Salon.com, describes the relationship between ICE and the street fighting right-wing thug organization, the Proud Boys, the participants in the January 6 insurrection.  She describes them as a "fledgling community of wannabe brownshirts" and "deadbeats and losers," and describes how the zealous, cosplaying fascist leader of Homeland Security, Kristi "ICE Barbie" Noem, has adopted their style and manner.  An excerpt, but please read her entire article:

"I’m far from the first observer to notice how much ICE, under the leadership of Homeland Security Secretary — and proud dog-killer — Kristi Noem, has come to resemble the Proud Boys, a neo-fascist group founded by Gavin McInnes in 2016. As Wired’s David Gilbert wrote in response to ICE’s recent invasion of Minneapolis, the reason we haven’t seen a resurgence of the Proud Boys in Trump’s second term is that the president’s 'militarization' of ICE and 'embrace of white nationalist rhetoric' leaves the group 'without a role to play.'

ICE’s current aesthetics owe much to the Proud Boys, from the masks they use to hide their identity and their corny but racist language about 'heritage' to their attachment to the phrase 'FAFO,' which is short for 'eff around and find out.' But Kristi Noem hasn’t just changed the way ICE presents itself. The tactics the agency now uses and the ideas fueling its mission are eerily identical to the vision of the Proud Boys that McInnes laid out from the group’s very beginnings." (our emphasis)

ICE's recruitment campaign is in full swing, and it's targeting the same "losers" and "deadbeats" that populate the Proud Boys and other violent, far right-wing groups like the Oath Keepers, Patriot Front, and militia groups.  (A recent report that Proud Boy leader Enrique Tarrio was an ICE office has since been disputed).

It's easy to watch the actions of ICE officers harassing and beating people from LA to Chicago to Minneapolis, and have strong memories of the Proud Boys and their ilk storming the Capitol on January 6.  They're cut from the same dirty cloth.

Trump's "Cabinet Of Curiosities"

SNL's cold open last night featured a Malignant Fascist (James Austin Johnson) meeting with his "Cabinet of curiosities, my little freaks, various nightmares and monsters from the twisted mind of Guillermo del Trump."  Joining him was Marco Rubio  (Marcello Hernández), JD Vance (Jeremy Culhane), Kristi Noem (Ashley Padilla) and Pete Hegseth (Colin Jost).  "Weekend Update" also had some nice jabs.

Dementia Don's Latest Greenland Threats

He's desperately babbling about nonsense again -- threatening more tariffs on NATO allies that oppose his insane takeover of Greenland:

Image

"Only the United States of America, under PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP, can play in this game, and very successfully, at that!"  said the world-class moron and unhinged narcissist.  That sound you hear is champagne corks popping in the Kremlin.

Paraphrasing Henry II of England, "Will no one rid us of this troublesome President?"

Also: Release the Epstein-Trump files!

Trump's Approval On Foreign Policy Sinks

Image

Polls are indicating that the deranged Malignant Fascist's foreign policy is increasingly unpopular with the public. A Marist poll conducted January 12 - 13 shows that only 37 percent approve of his handling of foreign policy, with 56 percent disapproving and the rest "unsure". A poll by the Economist / YouGov conducted from January 9 -12 shows very similar findings: 39 percent disapproving of his handling of foreign affairs and 50 percent disapproving.

The MF's eagerness to intervene in other nations may be wearing thin with much of his so-called "America First" cult, although 37 percent is indicative of their blind loyalty. Among independents, his approval is only 29 percent.

Threatening Iran, Cuba, Denmark / Greenland with military action almost simultaneously, and snatching Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro in a special ops raid are signaling to his cult, who were counting on the MF focusing on reducing consumer prices, that his interests are elsewhere (while also diverting them from the slow release of the incriminating Epstein-Trump files).

BONUS: In a new CNN poll, 58 percent say that the MF's first year in office was a failure. Also, 65 percent say he's not a President they can be proud of.  Sad!

Freeing Fraudsters: Trump's Corrupt Pardons Continue

Image

Game recognizes game.  The utterly corrupt, convicted felon fraudster Malignant Fascist continues to open the prison gates for his fellow insurrectionists fraudsters, including two-time losers:

A San Diego businesswoman who was granted clemency by Donald Trump in 2021 and later convicted on new fraud charges received a pardon from the president on Thursday, according to a White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The pardon involves Adriana Camberos, 55, convicted by jurors in 2024 of making tens of millions of dollars by selling wholesale groceries after lying to manufacturers about where the products would be sold, according to the Justice Department. Camberos was released from Bureau of Prisons custody on Thursday, according to an agency website.

Her brother, Andres, who was convicted with her at trial in 2024, also received a Trump pardon, the White House official said.

Separately, Terren Peizer, who was convicted in 2024 of insider trading and sentenced last year to 42 months in prison, also received a pardon, according to the White House official.

In all, Trump granted clemency on Thursday to 21 people, White House pardon czar Alice Marie Johnson said in a social media post. Trump has said he’s using his unchecked clemency powers to correct abuses in the criminal-justice system against those prosecuted for political reasons, particularly under former President Joe Biden. But Trump’s critics say he’s undermining the work of Justice Department prosecutors by giving pardons and commutations to undeserving recipients who gain access to him.

The White House official said the Camberos family was unfairly targeted and subject to political prosecution by Biden’s Justice Department after Trump commuted Adriana Camberos’s sentence in 2021 for another conviction. In the new case, prosecutors under Biden investigated a business practice that brought down the price of groceries, the official said.

Besides Adriana Camberos, other people granted clemency by Trump have committed new crimes. They include Eliyahu “Eli” Weinstein, a convicted Ponzi schemer whose 24-year prison term was commuted by Trump in 2021. In November, he was sentenced to 37 years behind bars for stealing $44 million from investors after he was released.  (our emphasis)

That's the MF's milieu, the people he feels most comfortable with and who mirror his predatory "values":  no morals, no scruples, no sense of right or wrong, viewing people as sheep to be fleeced.  We know that the MF does nothing without a quid pro quo.  We wonder what it i$ in these ca$e$.

It wasn't a secret in 2016 or again in 2024 that the MF was a lifelong con man, charlatan and criminal, yet tens of millions of Americans said, "That's who I want running our country."  As a commenter at LGM put it, "The Electorate strapped us to a Fuck You Machine and it will end when he dies."   Sic transit gloria, America.

QOTD -- Trump's Random Healthcare Distraction

"... Trump’s video unveiling this “proposal” was an odd pastiche of boasts about what he’s already done in the health-care arena (particularly his jawboning of pharmaceutical companies to lower prices for some drugs), denunciations of the “Unaffordable Care Act” (a term he clearly considers a bon mot), and wild claims about how incredibly good and cheap health care will soon become. He talked of lowering prices by far more than 100 percent, which is a mathematical impossibility. He failed even to mention the biggest problem Obamacare was created to address: the refusal of insurers to provide coverage for people with preexisting conditions or inherently expensive treatments. And once again, Trump’s impulses led him in contradictory directions; despite his denunciations of Obamacare, one of his big ideas is to build on an Obamacare discount feature called “cost-sharing reductions.”  [snip]

"More likely than not, the president is just engaging in some high-visibility pre-midterm “messaging” to show concern over a set of problems that have stumped him and his party for eons. Maybe it will eventually turn into a proposal that more or less hangs together, even if its enactment by Congress is the longest stretch imaginable. Unfortunately, Trump’s claim that he has a “plan” will almost certainly kill off the already languishing efforts to come up with a bipartisan fix for the Obamacare-premium spike that is just now beginning to be felt in pocketbooks everywhere. He should have kept his rambling thoughts to himself." --  Ed Kilgore, New York Magazine, in "Trump Repackages Random Ideas Into 'Great Healthcare Plan.'"  Meanwhile, the Malignant Fascist and his Republican party/ cult enablers are doing nothing to stop Affordable Care Act premiums from skyrocketing;  in fact, as Kilgore notes, the timing of this "plate of spaghetti thrown against the wall" is likely to kill any hope that a fix for the rising ACA premiums can be passed, doubtless what the MF and his sociopathic minions had in mind.  They don't want Americans to have nice things like affordable health care or cities that aren't war zones.
