The inmates and staff of us may have some unusual ways of showing that they care about one another. Whether it's Beecher buying Keller a pair of socks or Claire Howell electrocuting Stanislofsky, their love languages range from a simple gift to a grand gesture. And sometimes, they're offerings are so subtle that the other person doesn't even realize it.

Your assignment is to write about a character's or a pairing's love language. Shoot for 100 words, but no one's going to drop a hair dryer in the bathtub if you go over. Turning the calendar over might be a time for rebirth, but it also may be a time for renewal. In Oz, it's no different, what's renewed could be a relationship, like Beecher & Keller's, it could be a renewal of purpose, like for Said, or even the most basic renewal of a book from the prison library (Would that even be necessary? “You're forgetting Nappa,” Zanghi said.

“That was his own doing. They think we're soft. We need to show them someone's in charge that's not gonna back down. And the way we do that is by following the Golden Rule- Do unto others before they do unto you.”

“That's not-” Zanghi started, but Pancamo stopped him with a look. “Okay,” he said, resigned. “What's the plan?”

RECKONING - Kareem Said - 100 words

For too long, Said had fallen prey to the sin of pride. He was a powerful leader and a respected teacher. His followers had looked to him for a course of action and he supplied it at every turn.

The trouble is they should have been looking to Allah for answers, not him.

The night after Khan took control of the Muslims, Said realized that this was a lesson to never forget who he was. Sobs racked his body as he lamented his failures and not even the gentle touch of Tobias Beecher's hand on his could bring him comfort.

Our prompt this time around is the quote

"Never forget who you are."

Whether it's someone giving themselves a pep talk, someone issuing a friendly (or not so friendly) reminder to someone else, or Tim McManus' moral crusade of the week, there can be a time and a place for this sentiment.

“I just wanted to know that when all of this is over that Cyril is going to be normal again. That's gotta count for something, right?”

“I suppose, but there's still a chance that the State...”

“No, Father, there's not, and that's okay. He'll be free this way.” With that, Ray watched the door close between them as Ryan left the office.

Note: I just discovered this bit of fic after cleaning out some folders. I wrote it over a year ago, but apparently forgot to post it. D'oh! Getting old, I guess!


Ryan O'Reily slid into a chair at an empty table. He opened his latest mail order catalog and quickly became absorbed in its contents, barely noticing Beecher when he sat down next to him.

"What're you reading?" Beecher asked.

"A new catalog from the Acme Corporation," Ryan answered without looking up. "They sell the most amazing shit."

"Like what?"

"Giant rubber bands, bouncing anvils, do-it-yourself tornado kits, explosive birdseed," Ryan listed. "And that's just this month's specials."

"Sounds like quite the variety of potentially lethal products."

"Yeah, a person could do some serious bodily harm to their worst enemy with this stuff." Ryan flipped to the next page. "Too bad it all costs a fortune."

Beecher raised an eyebrow. "I got money," he stated quietly. He glanced across the room to where the Aryans had gathered. "And a worst enemy."

Ryan said nothing.

"Unfortunately," Beecher continued, "I lack imagination. If only I knew someone with some real ingenuity. Then I could pay him to devise a plan."

Ryan finally looked up from his catalog. His eyes followed Beecher's gaze, and a sly smile inched across his face.

"Beecher," he said, "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Happiness isn't something easy to come by in Oz, but there are small things, small moments that give the characters some sense of joy and contentment.

Sure, you can go with the satifaction of seeing one's rivals punished or having sex with a loved one, but what about something like Toby surprising Chris with a bag of Atomic fireballs, somebody getting a royal flush as they play poker, having something other than chicken nuggets for dinner, etc.

“She's not here,” Busmalis said, flipping through the pages of a science magazine. “Those weaselly, slimy bastards took her.”

“Took what?” Rebadow asked.

“My autographed picture of Miss Sally. It was here and now it's gone. I know they were going to crack down on girlie magazines, but this is different. It wasn't a magazine. It was just a picture of a beloved children's show host. There's absolutely nothing pornographic about it.”

“Nothing?”

“No. Miss Sally is an angel. And Norma never did give me anything personal except I know it was her that signed Miss Sally's name, so it's like it was a gift from Norma to me. And now, it's gone forever. I put it in the magazine so it wouldn't be found. Who would look at a science magazine? Not me.”

“Maybe that's why they were suspicious.”

“I should have buried it. Betty would have kept her safe for a while.”

“Betty? You're...? I thought they confiscated your tools the last time.”

“So did they,” Busmalis said, with a smile.

Whether official shakedowns or just petty behavior, things are being confiscated all the time in Oz. Your assignment is to write an event where something is or about to be confiscated. 1) Write something on the number three (much like the Twosday prompt), so things like threesome, triple, trio, thrice, or three itself are welcome
2) Use another version of "trip" which in poker means three of a kind (like 333) - drug trip, trip to the infirmary, trip and fall
3) Write something that totals exactly 333 words (I'll trust you on this one, I'm not going to count).
