holiday excess
Nov. 26th, 2013 10:41 amI wish there was a way to convince people to do exactly ZERO shopping on Thanksgiving ( and the following Friday if I really had my druthers ).
I feel like being asked ( or forced ) to work on one of the few big non-religious holidays that centers around spending time with your loved ones so your employer can make dosh that day is pretty much heinous.
I wish we, as a society, did not reward retailers who run these insane store deals and hours on Thanksgiving day. Consumers who want to spend money can do it pretty much any other day , ya know?
I want the guy who helps bag my groceries and that lady who checks me out at Ross to be able to enjoy their Thanksgiving with their family/friends and not be worried that they have to jump up and leave so they can make their work shift ( or have to arrive late to the meal because they were manning some stupid counter so the random person who forgot "roll and gravy" can grab shit last minute ).
So I boycott going to ANY store on Thanksgiving, even my beloved Starbucks.
I don't do Black Friday either ... but maybe more because the whole day is so overboard with people acting poorly and acting like buying loads of shit is just so damn important ... That's just not how I roll, it feels icky, it feels like it really lacks personal touch , it feels empty. *shrug*
Thanksgiving will find me working technically ... i'll be doing my shtick and making all-things run smoothly for our homeless kids at MGP. Our usual Friday night drop in facility will be open and making Thanksgiving special for them. I'll also be making a pit stop at my folks and hopefully at my good friends Daniel & Jason.
Hope your Thanksgiving goes swimmingly, hugs and kisses my friends :)

Nov. 21st, 2013 03:42 amI would really love Calculus 2414 ( 2 ) more if I could take it at 1/2 speed. I mean , yes ... it's a tricky little beast and I can see why they call in the engineer killer ... but it's beautiful ...if i could just have the proper amount of time to memorize all these theorems.
GAH!
I'm doing okay ... I feel like i'm going to pass. Getting that golden fleece , otherwise known as an A, well... i'm not so sure that's gonna happen. I feel like I have a really good chance at grabbing a solid B though ....
My first B ...but in this case , considering the material covered and the difficultly level , I would be okay with it.

dirt and green things please
Oct. 14th, 2013 03:16 amI'm near obsessed with making this new concrete jungle a lush and fragrant garden of delight .... on a pauper's budget of course ... free pallets and bags of yard waste set to the curb are my current best friends.
We've build 3 large raised bed gardens that i've filled with bushes butterfly's like to frequent and herbs and veggies ...and all of my roses went into pots so they could come along with us when we moved. They seem to be just fine in the poys so i'm leaving well enough alone on those.
This weekend i'm building 2 more pallet based raised beds and i'm starting to put serious thought into where I want to put my water gardens. I have 3 4 foot peanut shaped pools that Willa had been hoarding for a rainy day after buying them for less than pennies on the dollar about 10 years ago. They just sat in her storage , as most of her "project" stuff does. Lucky for me she has been trying to de-clutter a bit and was happy to let me give her $20 for all three pools. Hell , she made a profit , lol ! She only paid $5 for each of them ( original price tag shows them to be $89 - woah! )
We have built most of a concrete wall that is also a succulent garden in the making. It's functional for keeping the dog from running into 4 lanes of one-way traffic in the front of our church/house. But , eventually I think it's going to look bad ass :)
** I think I haven't mentioned , we ended up moving into a building in the Heights that used to be a church - the sign's still up actually , and there is a broken pew in the back. The yard was basically covered in shitty asphalt except for a postage size piece in front. I'm watering and weeding up there trying to bring the grass back on that patch ...but the rest ... well ...i'm putting into practice some of those urban gardening techniques i've read about and watched videos on .... it's my turn to try that shit out - yea ! **

A joyous occasion
Apr. 20th, 2013 02:59 pmToday, two of the most brilliantly sweet people I know here in Texas are getting married , Josh and Patricia. I love that one of their gift suggestions is a donation to The Periwinkle Foundation. What an awesome cause :) and what an awesome couple to be supporting it even on their "big day".
now to figure out what i'm supposed to wear to a 5:30 wedding at a museum in the South ... lawd !

Apparently one should always keep a book titled "Carthage Mvst Be Destroyed " on your bedside table.
Have him read Chapter 4 concerning the Carthaginian economy in western Sicily in the 5th century BC and the rivalry with various Greek city-states on the island. In particular, the disastrous war led by Hamlicar in 480 BC.
Your lover will be filled with unbridled enthusiasm and the rest of your evening will be *ahem* memorable.

Phi Theta Kappa
Feb. 21st, 2013 02:37 pmFor what it's worth i'm pleased to have some sort of "reward" for my 4.0 , so i'll accept the invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa and hope that it will give me some additional access to scholarships for the next two years.
Thus far NONE of the scholarships I have applied for have come thru , I suspect because there seem to be universally a "financial need" component I no longer qualify for ( or an age range requirement that I am outside of ) ... the only downside of marriage that I have found thus far.
Fingers crossed that PTK can open up some $$ doors for me in 2013.

In the home stretch for Fall Semester
Dec. 7th, 2012 12:39 pmTrg final is done and I do believe i'll be keeping my bright shiny 4.0 GPA *hooray*
Managed to get a 96 on the big paper of the semester for Comp II and an still enthused enough about the subject that i'd like to flesh it out further, do even more reseach, and possibly drive out towards San Antonio and check out the facilty in person.
Biology I is the big brain hog between now and Wednesday of next week. I've got a near 100 in the class thus far but the final is 15% of the grade ... so I still need to pull a decent grade on it. It's 100 questions and comprehensive of 450 huge pages of detailed material. I will b4e eat , sleep, and dreaming Biology until the cows come home :)
I've applied for the National Science Foundation Scholarship. My biology teacher ( who is on the selection board ) thinks I have a really good chance of getting it and encouraged me to apply.
I've also submitted my offical request for admissions to University of Houston and the Cullen school of Engineering.
I am the lead candidate for a part-time position back with Chevron doing document control. In fact, it appears that I may now be the only candidate they are considering as the second choice has taken another position within Chevron My final interview is next Tuesday. The pay is exceptional ( $32/h) and it would only be a 6 month contract. This makes it the perfect position timewise for me. I would be able to keep going to school (albit part-time instead of full-time) and the contract would end just as I am gearing up for returning to full-time in the Fall at University of Houston. Hopefully by that time Wes will have sold the house in Bay City and found a job here in Houston. Fingers crossed.
We're going back up to Seattle post-holiday for a week. We are both really looking forward to it and Kelsy seems unusually enthused as well. Her boyfriend from Turkey ( Arda ) will be coming to see her for 3 weeks in December so we will get a chance to meet him. The house my mom made an offer on will have been approved/denied by the bank that forclosed on it during that same week we will be there as well ...so we might be helping her move into her new place - that would be outstanding.
More later ...

Nov. 26th, 2012 01:05 pmYuletide trees scenting up the front of almost every grocery store parking lot ...LOVE IT!
It's going to be a real challenge to not get one RIGHTNOWRIGHTNOWRIGHTNOW. Jon has asked that we not decorate the tree until he gets home , not sure how i'm going to explain that one to Ro without giving away that he is coming home ...he wants to surprise her at school.
