Wallpaper Tutorial: The Cullen Family

How to make

Image

So, this is my new tutorial =). I made a wallpaper of one of a promotion picture of “Twilight”, one of the greatest books ever. It’s very easy and beginner friendly, there are not much steps and it’s 100% TRANSLATABLE. I think that we should start now.

STEP 1:

Open a new document, wallpaper size. Mine was 1024x768. Fill it with black.

Image

STEP 2:

Now take a Mask Brush that suits you. I took this one (by ???, tell me, if you know!) Paste it wherever you’d like it to have. Make sure that the background is either transparent or has the same colour as your 1024x768 document.

STEP 3:

Now look for the picture you want to have on your wallpaper. I took this picture (by stepheniemeyer.com) of the Cullen family. Paste it onto your brush mask and set the layer mode on “Darken”. (It would be great if the picture had the same or a similar size as the layer mask, because otherwise you would see a white stroke where the picture ends.)

STEP 4:

Doesn't look very special yet. But it will be nice, trust me! Duplicate your picture layer and set it to “Soft Light” 50%.

Image

STEP 5:

Next, go to “Layers -> Adjustment Layers –> Gradient Map”. Choose a black and white gradient and click “ok.”

Image

STEP 6:

You should have a nice b/w picture now. Next, we’re going to choose our text. I wrote “The Cullen Family” in “WhisperWrite”, colour white placed the text directly under my picture or wherever you’d like it to have and set the opacity to 50%.

Image

STEP 7:

I also chose a great quote of the book and placed directly under “The Cullen Family”. My font was “Carmilla Demo”, again it was white and I set the opacity to 30%.

Image

STEP 8:

Looks good, but still too empty. So you’ll have to look for a nice light texture. I chose this one (by the great Hybrid Genesis) and placed it on my wallpaper. I had to erase many parts (with a soft brush eraser or simply a layer mask), it took me a lot of time, but at the end I was happy. I set the texture to Screen 70%.

Image

STEP 9:

This is our last step. I duplicated the light texture and set the blend mode to Soft Light.

Now you’re finished. I promised that it would be easy, did I? But if you want to have the PSD I'll upload it for you. I hope you had/have fun and I’d love to see what you came up with!
