tutorial #1!

This is my first tutorial!

I drew on what I learned from a lot of other tutorials so it may not be the most original, but I like it =]

Here's what we'll be making with PS7: (I don't think there's anything that can't be translated)

Image

1. I started out with this picture from http://the-op.com :

Image

2. I cropped out their credit (the line that says the balboa observer-picayune). It just looks better without it, and I will credit them in my userinfo. I figure that it's all good.

3. Since this isn't the highest quality image, I did auto levels, color and contrast.

4. Duplicate your base (CTRL+J) and set it to SCREEN 50%.

5. Duplicate your base again and drag it to the top. Set it to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

6. Create a new layer. Fill with #000040 and set it to EXCLUSION 100%.

7. New layer, fill with #E5E0DB, set to COLOR BURN 100%.

8. New layer, fill with #EDECAF, set to MULTIPLY 100%.

9. Duplicate your base, desaturate (CTRL+SHIFT+U) and set to SOFT LIGHT 100%.

10. This may depend on your picture. I felt that mine was a little too bright. So select a New adjustment layer (Brightness/Contrast).

I set it to:

Brightness: -8
Contrast: 10

Play around with this.

11. I really wanted to bring out the blue more and add more richness. There was too much yellowy/green for me. But this may suit your picture. I'm no expert at curves, but I found something I liked and set it as such:

RGB
Input: 43
Output: 24

RED
Input: 40
Output: 36

BLUE
Input: 85
Output: 114

You can start with this and adjust it to fit your pic.

12. New adjustment layer, Saturation +14. Adjusting to fit your pic still applies here.

13. I used white paintbrush on a new layer to make the curvy line. I'm sure you can find a brush like this but I don't know too many places to get them. I set it to NORMAL 84% so it wasn't such a sore thumb.

14. I added my text, which was from the scene. I used LUCIDA BRIGHT in a few sizes with differing opacities. Play with this. =]

15. I tagged my name really small under it in a lower opacity. I didn't want to make that the focus but I still wanted my bragging rights.

16. DONE! Hope you liked it =]
