I grew up in rural Lincolnshire and lived most of my adult life in London before moving down to Whitstable on the north Kent coast about ten years ago. In early 2019 I moved again, this time to Berlin. I’d been visiting the German capital frequently for many years, flying back and forth every other week until I finally made the move proper.
Flitting between two countries, I’ve absorbed influences from both Britain and Germany.
Ever since I first set eyes on the work of the Neo-Romantics I was drawn to their images; the unmistakable tang of the British weather, the froth of cow parsley along the hedgerows and the standing stones and lighthouses that punctuate the landscape like sentinels.
More recently, when I started spending more time in Germany, I fell for the modern gothic of the Expressionist architecture I saw there, and the emotional intensity of German painting.
My artistic inspiration comes from various sources, with common threads perhaps being the landscape (urban, rural and wild), the genius loci, myth, and life’s infinite oddities.
One of my favourite quotes from Roald Dahl’s The Minchpins might sum things up best – ‘Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it’.

I make Victoria sponge for our weekly life drawing group. Home-made jam of course. And Glengettie (Welsh) tea, but Yorkshire is pretty good too.
Ok, now that’s a weekly drawing group I’d like to go to, home made Victoria sponge!
Oh yes and great models too
