While Matt's family was here, we took everyone ice skating. Kristina, Meghan, and Matt all grew up on the ice so they were naturals out there! Abby was super excited to go. I didn't think the boys would want to go, but once we got there, Nate started asking for ice skates. So after Matt went around the ice a bit with Abby (first by holding her up, then by holding her hand, next by holding her by the back of her shirt), we got Nate laced up with skates. The moment Nate tried to stand up, however, he complained that his feet hurt and he wouldn't put any weight on them. He just went limp with his body. So Matt took him out anyway and spent most of the time trying to get Nate to stand up. It wasn't really successful, but it was a good first attempt. By this time Abby was skating on her own and Jake was asking for a turn. So we got Jake laced up and put him out on the ice. Matt skated around once, mostly by holding Jake up by the shoulders. Then Jake wanted to get off, but immediately asked to go back out. After once more go around, he was done.
All of the cousins had a great time out there and it was fun for me to see Matt and his siblings do their thing on the ice.

*Examples of Nate negotiating:
Me: Nate, in 5 minutes you have to go to bed.
Nate: How about 8 minutes?
Me: Nate, you need to take a nap.
Nate: I don't want to take a nap.
Me: Well, you need to.
Nate: Then can I have a cupcake?

The Myers come to town
My parents came to visit us last week and left today. We really enjoyed their visit and miss them already! They were such a great help with the kids - we would have been a stressed out household this past week without them around. Some highlights of their visit included going to the arboretum, walks to the park, lunch with Abby at school, reading to Abby's KG class, popping popcorn, watching movies, doing crafts, playing Barbies with grandma, playing Transformers with grandpa, reading books, riding scooters, going to the gymnasium, etc. Grandma also took Abby on a date to the roller skating rink, and Grandpa took Nate on a date to the pet store and then out to lunch at McDonald's. They also cleaned, cooked, and babysat the kids. What a treat!

I celebrated my 31st birthday last week and commemorated the day by eating my body weight in sugar. I'm still recovering from that. Abby made me several cards, one of which said, "Dear mommy. Happy Happy Birthday. It is icsitin (exciting) that you are 31. Love, Abby." What a gem. Abby now has an email account and LOVES to receive and send messages.

Nate really loves Transformers and likes to watch the old 80's TV series which we rented on DVD. He also likes to play Transformers - making beeping noises and robotic movements until he "transforms" into a car on the ground. Matt is overjoyed that his son likes Transformers, since Matt lived for it as a kid.

Jake is hilarious. Much of what he says ends up with an "eyeball head" in the sentence. He loves to do things himself and help out with us when needed: "I do it! I get that!" He also loves his candy and cookies (he is definitely my child). When I catch him with a treat in his hand that he's not supposed to have, he tells me, "Not eat it. Look (at) it." Of course it ends up eaten, but I can't bear to take it away from him.

Brooke rolled over for the first time the other day! I didn't see it, but we saw the aftermath. She is a wiggly one and moves all over a blanket when she's laying down. She loves her oatmeal and continues to charm us with her cute, belly laughs.

We had our children's program today at church, which was a real treat. I love being with the kids in our Primary. Nate and Abby did great at delivering their lines in the practice yesterday. Today, however, Nate was feeling wronged before the program even started, so it took some major convincing to even get up on the stand. Once there, he shared my chair instead of taking his front row seat, he refused to give his line, and he sucked his thumb the whole time. :) The boy cracks me up. Abby sat in the front too, but gleefully participated. It was a great program. The music was beautiful and the children bore their sweet testimonies of gospel truths, which brought a wonderful spirit into the meeting.
Here's a picture of us at family night. It wouldn't be family night unless at least one (and usually more) child is screaming.

The Angels - soccer!
Abby has loved soccer this season. Her favorite part about soccer is playing in the games. During the game, when she is on the sideline, Abby watches the game intently and cheers when her team does well and is disappointed when they lose the ball. Her long legs help her run super fast and she loves going after the ball. Her coaches are great at teaching the girls positions and skills. Abby has learned a lot!
Jake was puttiing on a show for us at the last game. He kept taking his shirt and shoes off, so he was walking around topless. Then he got sick of his pants as well and kept stripping down to his diaper. He also enjoyed throwing things onto the field and then running right into the middle of the game to retrieve them.

Halloween
Halloween was great! The kids went with the Star Wars theme (mostly because I thought Jake would be cute as a Yoda). On Halloween night, we had a trunk-or-treat party at our church and also a chili cook-out in our cul-de-sac with neighbors. Afterward, the kids went trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. They got lots of candy and later enjoyed handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters who stopped by our house. Enjoy some pictures....

Nate's Birthday!
Nate turned four last Thursday! He had a great birthday! For presents, Matt and I were really exciting and got him a booster seat and a church shirt and some ties. His grandparents came through though (and so did friends at a birthday party) and got him some more exciting things.
On birthday morn, he awoke (early, of course) and we opened presents before sending Abby to school.

He called this blue tissue paper present the "tootsie roll" present and he told me that Brooke could help open it. It was from the Hunsaker's and it contained Nate's happening new ninja costume (he LOVES costumes!). The Myers grandparents got him some books, which he loves. Grandma Joan also gives the birthday child, as well as the siblings, a bag of goodies. My kids love it. Jake is a candy addict and he really enjoyed all the tootsie rolls. In fact, that was his breakfast.
We had a birthday dinner that night with some friends - Sylvia Smook & co. and Brenley Burton & fam (who just moved here from CA - yahoo!) - as well as Aunt Meghan and baby Trey. Trey turns one this week! On the menu was hot dogs, caesar and fruit salad, and Nate's favorite "ongon" (onion) chips. Abby, Nate, and Aunt Meghan helped decorate cupcakes which we ate afterward.

The next day, Nate invited a bunch of boys over for a pirate birthday party. It was fun for all - there was a treasure hunt, a dig for gold coins, pin the eye patch on the pirate, hide-and-go-seek, a mini-obstacle course, and a pirate story. These sound like nice, organized activities, but they really turned into mass chaos, with each activity lasting about 30 seconds. I decided that I am not meant to be a party thrower. Alas, the boys seemed to be happy. We ate pizza in the backyard and then enjoyed my mom's famous (at least to me) treasure chest cake. It's a cake that my brothers and I enjoyed when we were younger.
Nate loves being a four-year-old and he has been telling me all sorts of things that four-year-olds do. They get to go to the symphony. And apparently they don't take naps anymore. We'll see about that.
