11:09 pm - confirmation bias I got a new program for my computer today. All in all, I'd give it a B-. It mostly does what I want it to, but some of the features aren't very useful, parts of it are really confusing and hard to use, and sometimes it's downright buggy.
What is your conclusion?
- The programmer isn't very good.
- The Programmer is perfect and knows what's best for me. The problems are there for reasons I do not yet understand.

01:27 am - Why I am good at everything I do I was pondering the magnitude of my prodigious talents today, wondering: "Why is it that I'm good at everything that I do?"
The answer came in a flash of insight: because I don't do the things I'm bad at!

12:14 pm - Swingin' Under the Stars This weekend is "Swingin' Under the Stars" - a two-day West Coast Swing (WCS) event in Vancouver. WCS is my current dancing focus, and when performed by people who are much, much better than I am, looks like this:

09:15 pm - Today's life plan I notice that my life plan changes pretty often. Here is today's.
age 27-30: Get a B.Sc. in cognitive systems from UBC. 30-31: Work and save up money. 31-32: Live in Turkey and study Turkish music and language. (Avoid Turkish girls.) 32-36: Get a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Chicago. 36-40: Get a Ph.D. in cognitive systems from MIT.
I can't figure out what comes after that. Hopefully after having done all of the above I'll have a better sense of what's next. Maybe when I'm forty I'll marry some young, fertile woman and have a kid or two.

08:54 pm - Now what the hell is that...? Courtesy of Google maps, check out this building in North Korea.
Two things to note: 1) the shadow of the building relative to the shadows of other buildings in the area 2) the scale in the bottom-left corner of the screen (remember that 100m is a football field)
Weird, and disturbing...

07:07 am - Bush is at it again... Check out
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/09/28/congress.terrorism.ap/index.html
I just heard it on the radio. I'm not positive that this is going to lead to gross human rights violations, but that would be consistent with the Bush administration's behaviour so far. I'm at the point where I don't trust a single thing this administration does.
Questions: 1) Am I right to distrust this piece of legislation? 2) How do I, way out here in this exotic foreign country, vote in the upcoming mid-term elections?
It infurates me how Congress just goes along with Bush's terrible ideas, when it has the power to stop this nonsense. I think Americans get all caught up in the presidential elections and forget that their congressional votes matter at least as much.

06:01 pm - Maiden Voyage Sometime during the summer, my landlord gave me a bike she found abandoned in the alley. Old, rusty, dirty, and a very flamboyant shade of purple (very), but free. Good deal, I thought.
Last weekend I finally got around to taking it in for a tune-up. $120 later (plus another $120 for helmet, lock, and big whopping lights) and it was ready to go. So on Monday, I fired it up and took the Pridemobile (aka the P-RIDE) for its maiden voyage.
It was exciting, faster than the bus, and much-needed exercise. Vancouver has lots of small streets designated as bike routes, with cool obstacles that make them impractical for cars. As a result, you can bike most places in the city without having your nerves frayed by passing BMWs.
A bike, a Starbucks card... all I need now is an iPod and a dog and I'll truly be a Vancouverite.
