The International AstroGEN - Think Tank Innovation Competition focuses on utilizing engineering principles in order to improve upon an existing product, mechanism, or invention and bring forth some novel change. This is an international competition for high-achieving high school students that is being co-hosted with Think Tank, a scientific community, and being done in association with Astropods, the International Youth Developers Association, Sciencelunch, and the Future Tech Research Labs. With the core of AstroGEN-NSSEA being Physics, Engineering, and Computer Science, we hope you can apply all of these principles to create a cohesive project that pushes the bounds of a novel research concept. Think Tank also encourages you to push the bounds of your existing knowledge and explore these areas further. The task is to find an existing mechanism, such as a bicycle wheel, and find a problem with said mechanism. For example, a bicycle wheel might have some structurally weak points and is not able to universally traverse terrain. Keeping this problem in mind, you should develop a solution through scientific principles and detail how the solution addresses the given problem. The solution need not be super complex, but we encourage you to delve into topics you might not normally approach. We also encourage you to keep costs in mind, for this is an important concept in engineering.

Requirements

The submission deadline for this competition is January 1st, 2023, meaning that you have around 2 months to work on your given project and develop it as much as possible. By the submission deadline, we expect you to have created at least a prototype of your design and have it working to some extent.

When you submit, you have to include the following materials:

  • A short 5-minute video presentation by your group members explaining your solution and including your solution in action.
  • A 3000-4000 word paper that discusses the issue at length, the solution, and includes the implications of your design
  • Any additional files you might have that can showcase your design(CAD, code, etc.)
