The idea of this community and our user info comes from the mother ship: Imagefanficrants. Long live the crab apples.

28 Oct 2006 08:58 pm EST There is a 3 day ban in effect on icon review type posts. Please see the community for details. Thank you. - The Mngmt

Welcome to Icon Rants, where makers and admirers can get pet peeves and rants off their chests.

Wait, what?

This is a RANT community. That means you are not likely to see a lot of positive talk here. People come in, spout off and then others can agree or disagree as they like. This isn't to say that the rants themselves are the end all and be all of a person's attitude toward making icons. (They might not even think the same way in a few months.)

This is not set up to be a 'nice' community. There may be vitriol spewed about certain trends and/or art. However, it is not meant to entice people into harassment. Imageiconrants does not condone members going to other websites, communities or forums and trolling, wanking, mocking, or being a general pest. Posts that try to whip the community members up into a frothing mob will be deleted by the moderators and the offender(s) banned.

And now the reading of the rules:

1. If your rant is overly long, we please use the lj-cut feature. The lj-cut FAQ can be found over here if you are unfamiliar with it. Posts that do not conform to this rule will be summarily deleted by the moderators. Posters that claim not to know how to make an lj-cut will be thoroughly mocked.

2. Text only community promos are allowed once every three months per actual community (Please, no icontests. There's, too many of them) as long as they pertain to icons, icon making, and the icon maker community at large. TEXT ONLY! No honking big fugly banners.

Your personal icon community does not count as a community. It doesn't. Get over it.

3. So long as the post is on topic, it won't be deleted (as long as no other rules are broken), even if it's something that's been ranted about to death. (Though doing so will open you up to disgruntled ranters, so do this at your own risk.) It is highly recommended that people new to the community look over our posts and familiarize themselves with which topics are probably overdone, and which topics are best not ranted about because they are obvious hot buttons before actually posting. Elite icon communites are definitely a hot button issue.

4. Please don't make another post to answer questions from a previous post. Just reply to the comments in your original post.

5. When pointing out bad icons to the community, please do not just post a link and say 'this sucks' and nothing else. Let the community know why it generally sucks, such as a review. Any further posts with no explanation and just a link to a 'terrible icon' will be deleted by the moderators in the interest of keeping spam off members' friends lists.

5a. Any posts with a link to a user's icon must be friends locked. No exceptions.

5b. In any post with an image not yours, the image must be uploaded to your own space. No exceptions.

Posts such as these icon reviews are no longer allowed in the community, and are cause for banning. Take it to Imageugly_icons!

6. While this is primarily a rant community, links to good icons, observations, and other positive posts are perfectly welcome. That said, we're not going to host a mutual ass-kissing party once a week. Please do not post asking for favorite makers with examples.

7. If you come in here with a sock journal, you will be banned. Either you come in here with your own personal journal or you don't come in here at all. (There are exceptions to this rule, please contact the moderators if you are concerned. This rule largely goes for people who are too cowardly to rant using their own account, not for people who have separate journal accounts to keep track of communities.)

8. No disabling comments on a post, or deleting comments made by others. If you rant about something others disagree with, you take your lumps just like everyone else does or you can delete the entire post, whichever. (You may delete your own comments, obviously.)

9. If you do not like the way the tide of comments turns, and choose to edit the original post so it no longer reads in the manner it was posted, there is the risk it will be deleted. [Ed.note: I hate this. A lot. Don't do it. - Tangles]

10. If you want to link to an example of your rant, do not link to someone's personal journal. Linking to actual communities (not someone's personal icon community for their own icons, you guys know the difference), is fair game. If you must discuss that post, please ask that people email you for the URL instead.

11. Criticize the trend, the technique, the substance, or the style. Leave the creator alone. Ugly icons do not equal stupidity. Though becoming an asshat over being criticized about your icons voids your right to use this rule later once you've had your ass handed to you by the community.

12. There is no grudge posting. "They called my icons ugly and my community stupid! I'll show them!" type posts will be deleted, and you will be banned. Period. Temper tantrums are for children.

13. Charmling's Rule of Deus Ex Machina: Don't be an asshat.

The moderators will deal with most rule breaking on a case by case basis, and may end up handing out community time outs and perma-bans. Mod decisions are final, and if there is disagreement among the members, those offended are free to leave the community. Chasing a mod back to their personal journal, is an instant ban.

To those who may be offended by what you find here: We are allowed our opinions, so long as we keep them to our own little forum. If you come here wanting to be offended, you will be. Sensitive flowers would be best served by staying in their shiny, happy world of their own journals.

Of note: "Oh noes! You're violating my copyright by posting my icon/brush/texture here! *emo tear*"

Um, no.

According to The Publishing Law Center (http://www.publaw.com/cfaqs.html) :

Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work.

Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentages of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances.

That means you're shit out of luck. Sorry.

By the way, IP addresses are logged, there is no anonymous commenting allowed, and non-member commenting is screened. If you want to be a jerk, you're going to have to work to do it under your own user name.

The posts/comments within may contain profanity and/or icons that are not safe for work or your eyeballs. If you are easily offended, please be aware.
