Character Name: Impmon
Series: Digimon Tamers
Canon Point: Episode 16
Summary/History: Impmon @ the Digimon Wikia. Note: I'm going with the English dub rather than the subs.
Personality: Very fittingly considering his name, Impmon is very... well... impish. Except just calling him mischievous seems like an understatement. ‘Obnoxious troublemaker’ is more accurate. From the moment he’s first on screen, he constantly harrasses anyone he can. For example, he spends a lot of time messing with couples in the park, just because it’s fun. So basically just kind of a bully.
Of course, Impmon is a bit of a weakling. He’s only a Rookie level Digimon and not a very impressive one at that. So his favorite targets are those who either can’t or won’t fight back. So he goes after those weaker than him, like Calumon or humans. He also tries going after Terriermon after being told he won’t fight back - which doesn’t end all that well for him. Hell, he even tries picking a fight with a Devidramon, who could take him down in a single hit, because he knows the bigger ‘mon can’t get to him. Yeah, he doesn’t make the best choices. He’s basically the living incarnation of “FIGHT ME”. It makes him feel like a big shot.
The main characters are his favorite targets, because he hates Digimon partnering up with humans. He sees it as pathetic, like the Digimon are reducing themselves to being pets. Considering how he used to have tamers of his own that pretty much treated him like a toy... Yeah, there’s some projecting going on there. His experience with his own tamers has left him so bitter towards humans that he considers them all the same now. Little guy holds one hell of a grudge, huh? Plus he’s very resentful of the fact that the Digimon with tamers can digivolve, while he’s unable to.
Honestly though, he’s way more bark than bite and the other characters treat more like a pest than anything else. He talks a very big game and has a very obnoxiously arrogant attitude, but... he really can’t back it up. All his angry yelling is definitely a result of various insecurities. All he wants is to be strong and finally digivolve, but he can’t. So his arrogance is a facade to make himself seem more impressive, because he knows he’s weak. And the more it’s rubbed in his face, the more frustrated he gets. It’s when he’s frustrated that Impmon even picks fight with those who can and absolutely will kick his ass, as he gets more desperate to prove himself. Which… almost gets him killed.
It doesn’t help that he’s got a cynical view of life. Like a lot of Digimon we meet, he sees fighting as very important. He’s all about survival of the fittest, the strong going after the weak, that sorta thing. That’s just how the world works to him and, to be fair, that is basically how it worked back in the Digital World. Though at the end of the day, he doesn’t do a very good job of selling this belief. Despite constantly claiming how much he hates the tamers and their partners, he seems to hang around them an awful lot. And even ends up playing with them a lot of the time. Though good luck getting him to admit that, we might as well rename him to Tsunderemon.
Honestly, at the end of the day, for all his talk about how great it is to be independent, he hates being on his own. This is pretty obvious when you look at his reaction when people ditch him. He spends a lot of time yelling at Renamon and insulting her, but immediately yells at her to come back when she takes off. And similarly, when he ropes Guilmon into harassing people with him, he’s really disappointed when the dinosaur says it’s no fun and leaves him on his own. He keeps on trying to convince the other Digimon to be like him and just live a life of freedom, even when he knows they’re not listening.
One of the few things he does have going for him, though, is his stubbornness. Oh, don’t misunderstand, it sure as hell gets him in trouble a lot of the time. But Impmon is one determined Digimon, even managing to hang in there when an Ultimate level is kicking his ass. Just the fact that he survives on his own without digivolving for so long is pretty damn impressive. You’ve gotta at least hand him that one.
Powers/Abilities: Impmon is a Rookie level Digimon. Which isn’t very impressive compared to other Digimon, but he’s still more durable than most humans at least, since he’s made of data. Additionally, he can toss around small fireballs and even summon a slightly larger one. He also has the ability to digivolve, basically meaning he can transform into a more powerful Digimon... in theory, anyway. He hasn't really figured out how to do this yet, so for now, he's pretty much stuck as just Impmon. Sucks to be him.
