THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Anthony Edward "Tony" Stark/Iron Man
Series: Marvel Cinematic Universe
Canon Point: post-Captain America: Civil War
Character Age: 46
Background: You know who I am.

Personality: On the face of things, Tony Stark has, in a lot of ways, led a charmed life. He was born with the proverbial silver spoon, he's rich, famous, brilliant, handsome and charismatic. The public persona he displays is charming, sarcastic, arrogant and flippant - he loves attention and revels in his wealthy, high-tech lifestyle. He likes fast cars, loud music, and grabbing headlines with his various antics.

But Tony is also a walking bundle of contradictions. He certainly is arrogant and egotistical; he's incredibly good at making any given situation all about him, he tends to steamroller other people through sheer force of will - or just does what he wants without consulting anyone else because he thinks he knows best (as is the case with creating Ultron and the Vision, and putting Wanda under house arrest without her consent). Tony isn't used to people telling him no, and is aware that he's usually the smartest person in the room, so he has no problem just going around people or ignoring advice and rules as he sees fit.

On the other hand, Tony also has severe self-esteem issues, coupled with a massive guilt complex and PTSD-related anxiety and insomnia. Basically, he grew up with a father who largely neglected him, and when Howard Stark did deign to deal with his son, he tried to hold up Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, as an ideal for his son to live up to. Tony resented the hell out of this, and grew up feeling like he was never good enough to win his father's approval, and then much later as an adult Steve Rogers actually came back, so now he has to contend with the living embodiment of the ideal he could never attain as a child, so that's fun. Despite the resentment he still held for Rogers, Tony did come to respect the guy, even consider him a friend - that is, up until his recent betrayal. When Tony learned that his parents' deaths were in fact an assassination rather than the car accident he'd believed it to be, and that they'd been murdered by none other than Steve's old friend Bucky aka the Winter Soldier, Tony also discovered that Steve had known this and kept it from him. Tony proceeded to do his very best to murder Bucky, while Steve tried to stop him, and the end result is that Tony and Steve's friendship is broken - possibly beyond repair.

One of Tony's other major driving motivations is his guilt - for many years, he was the CEO of a major weapons manufacturing company, and when he discovered that his weapons were being sold to terrorists (and used to kill innocent people), this was his initial motivation for creating the Iron Man armor. His entire deal as a superhero is about making up for his (real or perceived) faults. More recently, he has the creation of Ultron on his conscience - an AI that spawned through his experiments with Loki's scepter (and the "Mind" Infinity Stone within it), which subsequently went crazy and tried to cause an extinction event to wipe out the human race. Tony blames himself for the destruction that Ultron caused, and this is his direct motivation for signing the Sokovia Accords, and his growing sense that superheroes in general, and the Avengers more specifically, need to have some kind of oversight.

The thing with Tony is that he is very good at convincing people he doesn't care about anything, when really he cares a great deal. He sort of reflexively keeps most people at arm's length through his sarcasm and his flippancy and his often-assholish attitude, but this is a defense mechanism. He's been betrayed and abandoned by people he cares about quite a bit in his life (beginning right from the start, with his father), but this doesn't stop him from caring. He really does want to save the world - he wants to protect people, especially the people he loves, and he is fully invested in making the world a better place. His two most important personal relationships are with James Rhodes, aka Rhodey, his best friend since college and currently the superhero War Machine, and Pepper Potts, his former PA and the current CEO of Stark Industries, with whom he's been in a committed relationship for several years. Pepper and Tony recently went on what Tony describes as a "break" - which has clearly devastated him and he's pretty desperate to get her back (he even cites their breakup as one of his motivations for signing the Sokovia Accords, a way to "split the difference" between his Iron Man activities and Pepper wanting him to ease up a bit on it).

And of course, there is Tony's ongoing commitment to the Avengers, which he's been bankrolling for a few years since the fall of SHIELD in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Despite the events of Civil War, Tony remains committed to the idea and ideals of the Avengers, and Steve even says that they're as much Tony's family as anything else. He's extremely protective of his team - he put Wanda under house arrest out of a misguided attempt to protect her from deportation and the angry public at large. Tony's greatest fear, in fact, is watching his teammates die and knowing that he didn't do enough to save them. Ultimately, Tony is a good guy who really wants to make the world better, even if he screws it up sometimes, and is, in his own words, a "piping hot mess".

Powers/Abilities: Genius inventor: Tony is one of the most brilliant minds in his world, with a particular emphasis on mechanical engineering/robotics and computer programming/artificial intelligence. The main thing he does is build/upgrade the Iron Man armors and the weapons on them, but he's also invented/built/programmed quite a bit of other stuff, including his computer helpers JARVIS and FRIDAY, robots DUM-E and You, an elaborate memory-recreating virtual reality thing he calls BARF (he's working on the acronym) AND he's got super leet hacking skills (he hacked the Pentagon as a teenager on a dare). Basically, he's used to overcoming physical disadvantages using his vast intellect.

Combat: Tony is technically a civilian (and a baseline human to boot), but he's definitely had some training in hand-to-hand combat (boxing and some form of martial arts), he can shoot a gun with decent accuracy and he's got some knowledge of stealth tactics as well. All of this is enhanced if he's wearing the Iron Man armor, but he's no slouch outside of it.

Business acumen: Tony was the CEO of Stark Industries from the age of 21 until he handed the reins over to Pepper. He was generally pretty good at this, knowing how to woo investors and cut deals to his advantage and maneuver politicians and military guys and moneymen of all sorts. He's got a natural affinity for PR and marketing and branding etc.

Piloting: Tony is experienced in piloting his Iron Man armor, even at very high altitudes and underwater.

Power Nerfs (if applicable): I don't think anything needs to be explicitly nerfed as Tony is technically a baseline human (though I might tone down the OPness of his genius a bit so he's not too infomoddy).

Inventory: - he'll arrive in the outfit he was wearing in his final scene in Civil War
- Additionally, he'll have on his wrist a very, very smart watch, which doubles as a (non-lethal) weapon. Seen in this clip, it can convert into a mini-Iron Man gauntlet, complete with a mini-repulsor that has sonic and flashbang capabilities. It's also bullet proof.
- Also his phone. The phone can be seen in this clip, about 1:50. Minus FRIDAY.

Incentives: - Keeping his loved ones safe, especially Rhodey, Pepper, Happy.
- Fixing Rhodey's spinal injury with alien medical tech or magic or whatever would be good too.
- Getting his Iron Man armor back, as well as his AI computer assistant, FRIDAY. Maybe some other pieces of his proprietary tech.
- Access to various kinds of alien tech, Tony will want to study it.

☄ First Impressions

♚ VISUAL: Handsome as fuqqqqqq. No okay, he's 5'9", but god, please don't advertise that, how embarrassing, he's literally the shortest Avenger (unless you count the spiderling in a onesie). He has ridiculously adorable warm brown eyes, and a stupid goatee thing that he refuses to shave off because it's his Brand (tm). He's got a pretty good physique for a guy who is definitely what most people would call "middle aged" (he's like 46 as of CACW). He works out. The only notable scarring on his body is the big mass of scar tissue on his chest from where he used to have an arc reactor - he's not gonna be showing that off in public anytime soon, though. But really, all you need to know is that he was People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive in 2009. Also, he has "the nicest butt in the world" (source: Pepper Potts).

♚ FASHION: Everyday, around the house wear: sweats, t-shirts, tank tops, hoodies. He likes vintage band t-shirts. Pretty normal clothing choices, really.

Public appearances: Tom Ford 3-piece suits. He tends to be a little bit daring in his fashion choices - he likes colors when other guys would probably go with neutrals, he likes purple ties and fancy patterns on his pocket squares, that kinda thing. Tony also has an extensive collection of designer watches - he collects them like some people collect shoes.

♚ DEMEANOUR: Tony is the kind of guy who always tries to make an entrance, whether it's with a one-line quip or literally blasting some music to announce himself. He waves his hands around and takes up a lot of space, or at least seems to, despite his somewhat short stature. Standing up, he moves around a lot, he won't stay planted in one spot for long and can sometimes come across as restless or even manic. Sitting down, he'll often slouch, in an attempt to look uncaring, lazy, and generally unbothered by anything.

♚ SOUND: Flat American accent, sometimes sounds a little New Yorky (he was born in NYC). Tony often talks a mile a minute, as if his brain is moving faster than his mouth can keep up with (which...yeah). He will frequently interrupt people, especially if they're saying something he already knows or considers useless or boring (which is often). He is shown speaking some French in canon, and he probably has some basic proficiency in several other languages as well.

♚ SCENT: He will sometimes wear expensive designer cologne to fancy parties and such, but most of the time, he will just smell like aftershave, sweat, motor oil/grease and maybe a little bit of ozone depending on what he's been working on lately.

♚ MENTAL INFORMATION: Nothing in particular here, though he has had his mind screwed with in the past (thanks Wanda, love u too) so he knows what it feels like and will not take kindly to it! This is probably also a good place to mention that Tony suffers from PTSD-induced anxiety and insomnia, vivid nightmares, and possibly a touch of paranoia. (It's not really paranoia if the aliens are actually going to invade.)

♚ MAGICAL INFORMATION: God he hopes not.

♚ HEALTH INFORMATION: Tony used to have a bunch of shrapnel in his chest, kept out of his heart by an electromagnet powered by a miniaturized arc reactor. Now that's gone and he just has a load of scar tissue. He's otherwise pretty fit and healthy for a middle-aged guy.

☄ OOC

♚ CANON POINT: I will usually default to post-Civil War or Spider-Man: Homecoming as his general canon point, but I'm perfectly willing to vary the canon point depending on the thread.

♚ BACKTAGGING: Yes please, always.

♚ FOURTHWALLING: Honestly he's more surprised when people don't know who he is, have you been living under a rock the past ten years? But please don't tell him he's fictional. DON'T BE MEAN.

♚ THREADHOPPING: Is very cool, unless it's marked private.

♚ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS: My hard no's are rape, suicide and cannibalism. Other questionable stuff, just drop me a line and we'll talk about it.

☄ IC

♚ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Tony can be kind of iffy about people touching him! You can sure try but unless you're a super close friend (or his girlfriend) he might flip out a little about it.

♚ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Being a superhero, Tony can and has gotten into all sorts of fights. I'm fine with this in general though if you want your character to seriously damage him, let me know so we can figure something out. With the Iron Man armor, Tony can take (and give) a serious beating without batting an eyelash. Without the armor, he is relatively proficient in hand-to-hand combat and firearms, though nowhere near the expertise of a trained soldier.

♚ FLIRTING: He doesn't initiate flirting so much these days, but he's perfectly willing to do a little flirty banter now and then, it's kind of an old habit. It's unlikely to mean anything, however.

♚ RELATIONSHIPS: Tony's in a committed relationship with Pepper Potts.
