Reclaiming the governance of information ecosystems for democracy, human rights and peace
An international organisation working with states and civil society to uphold democratic principles in the information space.
We work to safeguard information integrity as a foundation for democratic life
The Forum on Information and Democracy promotes information integrity as a cornerstone of democratic societies, by working at bridging decision makers, researchers and civil society expertise. In an environment marked by global information disorder and growing threats to democratic debate, we provide a structured framework supported by international cooperation and independent analysis.
Supporting democratic governments
We support governments in upholding democratic principles in the global information space. We facilitate international coordination and guide the development of policy solutions through the International Partnership on Information and Democracy, endorsed by 56 States.
Mobilizing global expertise
As a civil society-led entity, the Forum gathers researchers, activists and organizations from all regions to co-produce actionable recommendations. We identify systemic challenges, develop frameworks for accountability, and advocate for both regulation and self-regulation of digital actors.
Our focus areas
We take a structural approach to strengthening democratic information ecosystems, advancing recommendations to inform public policy while upholding democratic values. Our work spans interconnected challenges shaping the integrity of information in today’s digital public sphere, including but not limited to:
57 countries standing together to promote integrity, pluralism and democratic values in the global information space
The Forum is mandated by the International Partnership for Information and Democracy, an intergovernmental, non-binding agreement endorsed by 57 countries around the world. Its goal is to promote and implement democratic principles in the global information and communication space. It was formally signed during the 74th UN General Assembly in September 2019.
The Partnership itself is based on the International Declaration on Information & Democracy, published by an international Commission composed of Nobel laureates, journalists, activists and scholars.
We build bridges between expert communities and democratic governments to turn knowledge into action
Through its close network of civil society organizations, the Forum is committed to ensuring that diverse perspectives and expertises are heard and considered in shaping the norms and standards of the digital space.
By facilitating dialogue across sectors, from journalism and internet governance to climate and gender equality, the Forum ensures that diverse expert communities contribute to democratic policymaking. Its unique position at the interface between civil society and institutions enables shared understandings to become collective progress.
