U-Space Berlin: Overcoming Urban Challenges for Scalable Aerial Logistics
This presentation will introduce the U-Space Berlin initiative; Germany’s first real-world testbed for urban drone logistics, based at Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Richard will share insights into how the project addresses key barriers to adoption, including regulatory complexity, technical readiness, stakeholder acceptance and economic viability.
Focusing on the coexistence of controlled and uncontrolled airspace, population density, and the geographical restrictions unique to Berlin, Richard will explain how establishing a local U-space framework can help overcome these challenges. He will also outline economic and operational considerations, such as medical deliveries, food transport, required infrastructure and coordination with airspace users.
By demonstrating how U-Space Berlin reduces barriers through a collaborative, testbed-based approach, the session will highlight pathways to identifying valuable use cases, fostering public trust and developing scalable business models. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how structured experimentation with U-space can provide the framework required to move from small-scale pilots to a sustainable urban drone ecosystem in Germany and beyond.
