Ionic Technologies

Ionic Technologies (100% owned) is pioneering the recycling and refining of magnet and heavy rare earths from pre-consumer magnet scrap and spent NdFeB magnets (end-of-life magnets, including from wind turbines) with a planned commercial-scale facility in Belfast.

Building on patented IonicRE technology developed at Queen’s University Belfast, Ionic Technologies is reshaping the rare earth supply chain, with cutting-edge hydrometallurgical processes in REE refining and critical recycling capabilities separating 99.9% plus magnet rare earth oxides (REO).

An independent Product Carbon Footprint Study has shown Ionic Technologies’ magnet recycling process can achieve emissions reductions of up to 61% compared to the current REO supply chain sourced from primary (mine) supply.

By creating a sustainable, traceable supply of critical REOs, IonicRE is building a circular magnet economy, securing vital magnet supply for renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and defence.

Viridon

Viridion, a 50/50 JV with Viridis Mining & Minerals (ASX: VMM), holds exclusive rights in Brazil to monetise, implement and commercialise Ionic Technologies’ magnet recycling IP.

The joint venture is advancing development of a REO refinery and magnet recycling facility in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil to develop a closed-loop supply chain and circular economy for REE and NdFeB magnets in South America.

Under a MOU with CIT SENAI FIEMG Innovation and Technology Centre, Viridion also aims to develop South America’s first rare earth magnet supply chain.

Technology, De-mining & De-risking

IonicRE continues to advance its innovation and commercialisation surrounding refining, recycling and production of Neodymium-Iron-Boron (NdFeB) magnets within a circular economy.

IonicRE Executive Chairman, Brett Lynch:

“IonicRE is building a global industrial technology business based on our patented magnet recycling technology”

“Our de-risked, de-mined strategy is the fastest pathway to delivering shareholder value, replicating our Belfast model in new international markets to swiftly create a secure and sustainable ex-China rare earths supply chain.”

Market Potential

We have to build a more resilient supply chain, supporting projects and attracting more private investment from mining to refining, processing and recycling.

European Commission President von der Leyen recalled some hard facts: without secure and sustainable access to the necessary raw materials, our ambition to become the first climate neutral continent is at risk.

European Commission President,

Von Der Leyen

Market Potential

2030 Benchmarks for strategic raw materials (magnet rare earths) EU Critical Raw Materials Act:

  • At least 40% of EU’s consumption for processing within Europe
  • At least 15% of annual consumption from recycling
  • Not more than 65% of EUs annual consumption of each strategic raw material at any relevant stage of processing from a single third country

The race is on!

Market Potential

Lithium and rare earths will soon be more important than oil and gas. Our demand for rare earths alone will increase fivefold by 2030. […] We must avoid becoming dependent again, as we did with oil and gas. […] We will identify strategic projects all along the supply chain, from extraction to refining, from processing to recycling. And we will build up strategic reserves where supply is at risk. This is why today I am announcing a European Critical Raw Materials Act.

European Commission President,

Von Der Leyen

Market Potential

When peering into the outlook for the next decade to come, it becomes quickly apparent that the rapid demand growth of the 2020s will soon be dwarfed by the astronomical demand growth of the 2030s – and therein lies the real defining challenge and opportunity facing the global rare earth industry today.
