Nadat het vier maanden werd overgenomen door een project van Topp & Dubio is …ism project space weer terug van nooit weggeweest. Na 21 tentoonstellingen in ‘The Brick Space’ is het nu tijd voor een nieuwe transformatie in samenwerking met kunstenaar Ian Skirvin (Rotterdam, 1991).

Het kenmerkende interieur van …ism project space wordt daarvoor binnenstebuiten gekeerd waardoor een nieuwe wereld van sculpturen, geluiden en geuren waarneembaar wordt. Een situatie geïnspireerd op waargebeurde omstandigheden die zich mogelijk in de nabije toekomst hadden kunnen manifesteren. Ian Skirvin introduceert een scenografisch labyrint waarin het oriëntatievermogen van bezoekers op de proef wordt gesteld. Back though the corridors is een ruimtevullende installatie die bestaat uit dingen die ons bekend voorkomen, maar voelt als een reis in een ander universum.

After being taken over for four months by a project by Topp & Dubio, …ism project space is back from never before. After 21 exhibitions at ‘The Brick Space’, it is now time for another transformation in collaboration with artist Ian Skirvin.

For this, the distinctive interior of …ism project space will be turned inside out, revealing a whole new world of sculptures, sounds and smells. A situation inspired by true circumstances that could have possibly manifested in the near future. Ian Skirvin introduces a scenographic labyrinth in which visitors’ orientation skills are put to the test. Back though the corridors is a space-filling installation that is made up of things that look somewhat familiar to us, but feels like a journey into another universe.

Het kunstenaarsduo Topp & Dubio heeft …ism project space in Den Haag overgenomen en getransformeerd tot een nieuwe ruimte genaamd ‘The Brick Space’.

Met het project ’Remodeling Heterotopia’ herscheppen Topp & Dubio hun favoriete en vooralsnog onbereikbare tentoonstellingsruimte ‘The Brick Space’ (Glasgow) als verplaatsbare heterotopie. De installatie is een kopie op ware grootte van de gelijknamige ruimte in Glasgow (onderdeel van The Modern Institute). Gedurende drie maanden worden hierin nieuwe werken en modellen voor tentoonstellingen getest. Topp & Dubio organiseren verschillende presentatiemomenten die voor publiek toegankelijk zijn en die het begrip ‘tentoonstelling’ op experimentele wijze verkennen. De presentatie van The Brick Space als nieuwe ruimte is de eerste en meest ingrijpende interventie. 

De opening van The Brick Space vindt plaats op vrijdag 24 mei van 19-23 uur tijdens Hoogtij#77. 

Very Important Exhibitions Onder de noemer ‘Very Important Exhibitions’ zal in de presentatie ook een zaal worden gewijd aan uitgaven van kunstinstellingen die hun belangrijkste tentoonstellingen in boekvorm hebben gedocumenteerd. Verschillende kunstinstellingen in Nederland hebben daarvoor boeken ter beschikking gesteld. Ook de nieuwe publicatie van Topp & Dubio waarin hun recente overzichtstentoonstelling in Club Solo in Breda is samengevat, zal daarin worden getoond.

The artist duo Topp & Dubio has taken over …ism project space and transformed it into a new space called ‘The Brick Space’.

With the project ‘Remodeling Heterotopia’, Topp & Dubio recreate their favorite and as yet inaccessible exhibition space ‘The Brick Space’ (Glasgow) as a movable heterotopia. The installation is a full-scale copy of the space of the same name in Glasgow (part of The Modern Institute). New works and models for exhibitions are tested here for the coming three months. Topp & Dubio organize various presentations that are open to the public and that explore the concept of ‘exhibition’ in an experimental way. The presentation of The Brick Space as a new space is the first and most drastic intervention.

The opening of The Brick Space will take place on Friday, May 24 from 7-11 p.m. during art tour Hoogtij#77.

VERY IMPORTANT EXHIBITIONS
Under the heading ‘Very Important Exhibitions’, a room in the presentation will also be dedicated to publications by art institutions that have documented their most important exhibitions in book form. Various art institutions in the Netherlands have made books available for this purpose. The new publication by Topp & Dubio summarizing their recent retrospective exhibition at Club Solo in Breda will also be shown.

De eerste gast van 2024 bij …ism project space is Helmut Smits uit Rotterdam. Deze kunstenaar produceert heldere ideeën en kunstwerken die op de meest directe wijze worden uitgevoerd. Zonder pretenties, vrij, als het testen van een nieuwe stift. Zo kwamen ook de sculpturen tot stand die Helmut presenteert tijdens Hoogtij #76. Een serie werken die bijna achteloos zijn ontstaan na het nuttigen van een maaltijd of het gebruiken van een product. Gebruikmakend van materiaal dat overblijft en normaal gesproken in de afvalbak belandt maar in deze tentoonstelling de aandacht krijgt die het eigenlijk verdient. Naast de sculpturen is er ook een serie nieuwe tekeningen te zien die de werkwijze van Smits verduidelijken, en een boek dat nog niet bestaat.

The first guest at …ism project space in 2024 is Rotterdam based artist Helmut Smits. This artist produces clear ideas and works of art that are executed in the most direct manner. Unpretentious, free, like testing a new marker. This is also how the sculptures were created that Helmut presents during Hoogtij #76. A series of sculptures that were created almost carelessly after eating a meal or using a product. Smits makes use of leftover material which normally ends up in the waste bin, but in this exhibition it receives the attention it actually deserves. In addition to the sculptures, Smits is also showing a series of new drawings which clarify his line of thinking. And a book that doesn’t yet exist.

Als gevolg van een reeks misverstanden is Hee Sub Han (KOR, 1991) nu als exposerend kunstenaar te gast bij …ism project space. In zijn werk reflecteert hij op zijn eigen observaties ten aanzien van het uitvoeren van zijn kunstpraktijk. Onze cultuur zit vol tekens, die weer andere tekens nodig hebben om ze te kunnen duiden. Ons verlangen naar betekenis leidt tot een situatie waarin onze reële ervaringen bijzaak worden. Hee Sub Han verzet zich als kunstenaar tegen deze ondertitelde interpretatie. Zijn teksten, tekeningen, installaties en performances leiden tot een oneindige keten van radicale misverstanden en een gelaagde solotentoonstelling met drie titels.

As a result of a series of misunderstandings, Hee Sub Han (KOR, 1991) is now our exhibiting artist at …ism project spac. In his work he reflects on his own observations on performing the art. Our culture is full of signs, which need other signs to interpret them. Our desire for meaning and sense leads to a situation in which our lived experiences become secondary. As an artist, Hee Sub Han resists this subtitled interpretation, which leads to an endless chain of misunderstandings. His words, drawings, installations and performances lead to an endless chain of radical misunderstandings and a multi-layered three-title solo exhibition.

‘The Calling’ is een drieluik video-installatie waarin de fysieke afwezigheid van een eiland wordt gevierd. Het project maakt deel uit van een jarenlange multidisciplinaire samenwerking tussen de Nederlandse kunstenaar Ted Oonk en de Zuid-Koreaanse kunstenaar Su Jung. De kunstenaars hebben een eigen eiland gecreëerd, waarop zij hypothetische verhalen over verdeeldheid, categorisering, vervreemding en conflicten onderzoeken. Deze noties belichten de duistere kanten van onze beschaving, nauw verbonden met polariserende kwesties, zoals discriminatie, immigratie, vluchtelingen en sociaal isolement.

Omdat de kunstenaars vele kilometers van elkaar verwijderd leven en zijn opgegroeid met een geheel andere culturele achtergrond, behandelt de samenwerking ongemakkelijke vragen over onze vooringenomen manier van denken. Op het gebied van media omvat hun project fotografie, installatie, video, audio, objecten, publicaties, brieven en andere ongedefinieerde experimentele resultaten, waaronder gesprekken. Zo heeft hun betrokkenheid bij het project zich sinds 2015 ontwikkeld tot een archief van visueel onderzoek waarin eilanden in beweging komen.

‘The Calling’ is a triptych video installation in which the physical absence of an island is celebrated. The project is part of an ongoing multi-disciplinary collaboration between the Dutch artist Ted Oonk and artist Su Jung from South-Korea. By establishing a fictional anonymous island, the artists produce hypothetical narratives to explore the conceptual influence of division, categorisation, alienation and conflict. These notions illuminate the dark sides of our civilisation, closely connected to polarizing issues, such as discrimination, immigration, refugees and social isolation. 

As the artists live many miles apart from each other, growing up with an entirely different cultural background, the collaboration addresses uncomfortable questions about our biased ways of thinking. In terms of media, their project embraces photography, installation, video, audio, objects, publications, letters and other undefined experimental outcomes, including conversations. Thus, their commitment to the project has steadily developed into a thick volume of visual research in which islands start to move.

Su Jung (KOR, 1983) lives and works in Seoul. She finalized her education with a MA Fine Art at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 2012. Jung establishes narratives with language and deconstructs them into audio-visual works in various media. Being fascinated with poetic effects occurring in both linguistic and non-linguistic realms, Jung adopts metaphoric approaches in her practice. In this process, irony, paradoxes and absurdity pronounced by a combination of language and visuality consequently become efficient ingredients to express existential states such as limits, conflict, doubt and stupidity. Thus, by overlaying fiction over reality, Jung portrays an individual who experiences fatigue and dilemma and constructs an environment where deep scepticism grows.

Ted Oonk (NL, 1987) lives and works in Antwerp. She received a MFA in Photography from St.Joost Academy in Breda. She also holds a MA in Filmstudies and Visual Culture from the University of Antwerpen. Her work is centered around the many ways we both mask and bring to light vulnerability, standards and norms in our visual culture. Her artistic practice probes for a specific sensitiveness concerning socio-cultural and normative representations of the stereotypical other, but also plays with notions of the human necessity to categorize and use standards.
