Our History

Established in 1949, the ISPCA was created to deliver a good life for animals by rescuing and treating those animals in need, advocating on behalf of all animals and guiding everyone to love, respect and be kind to animals.

76 Year History

The NSPCA was formed in October 2025, when two of Ireland’s best-known animal charities, the DSPCA and the ISPCA came together to create a stronger, united voice for animals.

The DSPCA was founded way back in 1840, making it Ireland’s oldest animal welfare charity. For over 180 years, it has been rescuing animals, promoting kindness, and speaking out against cruelty.

The ISPCA, established in 1949, built a national network of rescue centres and local animal welfare groups. It worked across the country to rescue, care for, and rehome thousands of animals, and helped improve animal welfare laws through its inspectorate and advocacy.

By joining forces, the new NSPCA brings together nearly two centuries of experience. We now work as one national organisation, running rescue centres, supporting local groups, responding to cruelty through our Inspectors, and helping animals find the safety and care they deserve.

With your support, we’ll continue building a kinder, safer Ireland for animals and we’ll always be there when they need us.

A high level of animal welfare goes beyond preventing abuse, alleviating suffering or caring for animals in distress. We work hard to educate the public and Irish society in general that animals are an integral part of our lives, and that they deserve a good quality of life at all times.
