A horror divination ritual/LARP inspired by the folklore of Crybaby Bridge, for playing at a haunted bridge with a handmade baby doll, chalk, ashes and a deck of tarot/oracle cards.
It is an expertly crafted horror experience that injects magic and dread to an otherwise mundane (but possible haunted) location.
A solo-journaling game with fortune teller mechanics where you tell the story of a diasporic cryptid.
The game has an introspective and melancholy tone, with a sense of loss and yearning for the place/culture you are no longer a part of. I love how the game makes use of the fortune teller mechanics that is rarely seen in TTRPGs, and encourages the player to explore locations in real-life as if they are the cryptid themself.
A solo journaling game where you play as an explorer to a haunted castle.
Based on the Carta system, the player creates a map of the castle by placing down 24 cards face-down on the table. The PC can move into an adjacent area by flipping over a card, revealing the new location. The game transports you to a ruin that is too beautiful to leave, despite it being haunted.
A wonderful collection of 3 MotW mysteries inspired by Northern Germanic folklore; with an ancient spectre, a vengeful mermaid and an undead druid.
The writing is concise and evocative, and I love how the folklore inspiration for each creature is explained in the text.
It's a nice touch to have the mysteries ranked by their tone based on how scary/gory, comical or tragical they are supposed to be.
A very cool TTRPG inspired by French folklore!
In These Woods Are So Pretty, you play as lively visitors—which can be humans or animals—to a grumpy forest.
It has got whimsical storybook-style art and fun push-your-luck mechanics, and I love how everyone gets to celebrate together at the end of the game.
What I had in mind when I wrote the rule is for something like:
- The grass in the park grows in a strange pattern. I bet a cryptid is responsible.
- There's a funny sculpture in the mall. What if it comes to life every night to prank the security guard?
- As a teenager, my friends and I dared each other to perform strange occult rituals we found on the internet, and nothing happened. But what if those rituals actually worked?
You can create your own folklore, myths and urban legends, but they should be somewhat rooted in a culture you are part of or a place you belong.
Print-and-play board games are just not very popular as a whole. Out of the 61K physical games on itch, only 2.6K (4%) are tagged "Board Game": https://itch.io/physical-games/tag-board-game
Just looking at the top games on the list, a portion of them are in fact TTRPGs or zines about board games (and not actual board games themselves), so the actual number is even lower.
I am interested in seeing more board games though. :)
