Mar. 12th, 2019 10:03 amWhat matters is that it's up. Squidgie aka Walter has been in fandom at least as long as I have, dating back to the 80s and has hosted m_a for the last three years. I know he's got a will in place and succession plans on file with folks so I have no doubt that long after we are both gone there will still be something left of the old girl, along with the dozens of other sites that Walter hosts.
In honor of the occasion, I bring back the icon I used at the time on LJ.

Snowflake Challenge Day 5
Jan. 5th, 2019 09:02 amIn your own space, promote three communities, challenges, blogs, pages, Twitters, Tumblrs or platforms and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Continuing my theme of MCU:
Steve Rogers' New York - A look into the decades and the city that shaped Captain Steven Grant Rogers. The history and the culture of New York in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. A useful resource for fanfiction and just general independent interest. Because Steve Rogers.
Winterhawk kisses One of my niche pairings - Clint Barton and Bucky Barnes being the soft trashfire that they are. Nearly daily short fics that may or may not include a first kiss.
And a sharp veer to the left into the woods of Chagford:
Terri Windling on twitter and her website Myth and Moor. She's a wonderful writer and artist and regularly does longform posts with amazing art, songs and book quotes. If you enjoy fantasy and folklore and aren't following her already, please do. DW feed here: https://terriwindling-feed.dreamwidth.org/profile

Yup! I followed stoveandbucket a few days ago and they had taken on the elevator scene from TWS. I felt the silent solidarity fistbump from my own post yesterday and commented.

Snowflake Challenge 2019 - Day 3
Jan. 3rd, 2019 07:01 pmIn your own space, share a favorite piece of original canon (a TV episode, a song, a favorite interview, a book, a scene from a movie, etc) and explain why you love it so much. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So many come to mind. Little Drummer Boy from The West Wing, The Titanic video meta that someone did about the end of tumblr, press tour clips, the tag scenes in Stargate:Atlantis about the gate team in Seasons 3, 4, 5. All of them have some element of family and us against the world, that in-group thing that resonates with me. I'll even go old school and go with the patient POV episode of M*A*S*H. It came out in 1978 and is literally called Point of View. Sadly I couldn't find much about it online so instead, I'll fall back on MCU.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - since we're supposed to pick a scene I'll go with the freeway fight.

The Soldier looked up and blinked, clearly nonplussed to find Sam and Tony both staring at him. “Yes.”

“My boyfriend.”
“You have a boyfriend. You have a boyfriend?” Tony looked like he’d just walked into a lamppost, and then the lamppost had handed him a birthday present.
Sweet little sassy bon mot of a story.

Murder Ballads is amazing. The last story is in progress but the first two can totally stand without them - and the second one has Dazzler, a criminally underused character.

End of the calendar year
Dec. 31st, 2018 08:43 pmWe close between Dec 23 and Jan 2 so I took the time to deep clean my place, in slow motion. IE, 15-30 minute spurts of cleaning, multiple times a day when I found a new thing to clean. Sometimes it was organizing, sometimes it was the vacuum, and two days ago I spent 7 hours cleaning up the disaster that was my file system on my computer. I saw something elsewhere on social media that said they needed a 4-week vacation - two weeks to deep clean their home (twice), a week to cook, and a week to relax. When I've had jobs where we are closed over the winter holiday, I've always ended up using the time to clean, etc.
I also, in a thing that is so not me usually, also hung out in person with friends. Multiple times. Different people! It was lovely - and perfect because I spaced them a few days apart so it wasn't ever too much.
I had a to-do list for the holidays, none of which I did -HA. But I got a lot of other things done so I'm okay with it.
2018's word of the year was gratitude. With the death of an age peer in July, it brought back into focus and scale how very much I have to be grateful for. It was an excellent thing to keep bringing to mind in a year with all of the political unrest and crap and no end in sight.
2019's word is going to be self-respect. Hanne Blank, who I follow on fb, was answering questions and someone asked her what self-care looked like and she responded with the following:
"Respect means you pay attention to what's going on. That you provide the right kinds of support, that you don't belittle, that you take needs seriously, that you take boundaries seriously."
That? Is an excellent mindfulness to carry with me.
Cleaning, so much cleaning
Dec. 26th, 2018 04:39 pmIt doesn't hurt that the cats follow me in there and look pathetic until I give them a tiny bit of snack. Rewards all around!
I seem to have found at least some of Bucky fandom - on twitter. Gah. Though it does make for a nice mental whiplash amongst the photographers, activists, and political pundits.
I'm pretty sure I've found my word of the year for this year. I'm going to ruminate on it a bit more but this feels like the right one.
A changing world
Dec. 22nd, 2018 12:58 pmI removed instagram as well, given that they are owned by fb. I go and visit the site via Safari in phone mode. Instagram is going to be harder for me to get rid of. I've curated it to a lot of the things I love and it lets me feel like I'm still a photographer.
Tumblr is down to once a day. My dash is super slow now. I need to figure out how to do lists or filters on twitter so I can keep up with politics on one set and everything else (authors, fandom, friends) on the other.
I'm trying to stay active on dreamwidth and post regularly and I'm remembering how much I love this style of interacting with the 'net. The bit I miss is hitting a tag on tumblr really let you see anyone posting on that tag. It broke the social media bubble really well and I learned so much and saw so much that I wouldn't see otherwise. The network feature on dw is kind of like that but obviously doesn't have the massive userbase that tumblr did.
I'm on Discord but haven't gotten an invite to the Stucky one which I suspect is far more active than the writer one that I did get an invite to. I'm also on the Distributed Fandom discord as well and I'm watching and reading to see where I might fit into that effort besides throwing money at it. (I also really want to link them to the doc that was created for pinboard guy because that answers so much of what fandom is looking for that they are noodling on.)
And I got into twitch two months ago (I'm slower and slower to adopt new things, yo) and have half a dozen people I follow and exactly one subscription.
It's inevitable that some, honestly most, of these will fall away. I don't have time to keep up with this many info streams but I'm enjoying it for now and seeing what I like for what.
How about you?
2) Sent in my resignation to the con I've worked on for 12 years now. Yay! Less toxic in my life. Now to figure out what I want to do president's day weekend instead.
3) Made caramel tonight from smitten kitchen (apple cider). I will not win the office 'winter treat' contest but by goodness I have at least done a thing.
4) Current job is closed from Dec 22 to Jan 2 so I get a long holiday break again. I'm so looking forward to it.
So that is a thing
Dec. 15th, 2018 09:13 am2)One good thing about the tumblr effery is that I've seen some ancient memes scroll by so it's some version of a greatest hits - and the new memery like the Titanic one? Awesome. I've backed up a bunch of tumblrs and I'm trying to figure out a good way to link to that stuff here from my webhost (for the 3 gigs of images and movies) that isn't 1000% tedious.
Tumblr Exodus and archive
Dec. 10th, 2018 09:48 pmRe-learning and that trailer
Dec. 8th, 2018 08:58 amEdit: And I just double checked and the wordpress 'import' that I did links back to tumblr for all the images. And the video doesn't come over. So that was larely useless. Awesome. Not. Dang it.
In other news, I've downloaded a ton of tumblrs that I know are dead (haven't been updated in two or more years) because in addition to be a magpie I'm also a digital hoarder/librarian/archivist.
Trailer speculation for Avengers:Endgame behind the cut because I'm not sure folks know how to blacklist tags
