Java developers

I need to process a bunch of varying format data files(plain text) and do some data mining on them. I know I can do it with regular expressions, but I was just wondering if there is a general purpose framework that would assist me in this.

Are there any Java TTS engines that:
a) Are free
b) Run as an applet

Someone wanted me to make a speaking web-page thing essentially, so I figured, "Hey, I'll give it a shot," but I can't find a decent solution for it, except maybe having the server output a wav file on request, and embedding that in the web page, but a) that's work, and b) it's for a $25 contract, so I'm not interested in working that hard for it.
