01:08 pm - Imageneophoenix - Velocity, Hibernate

I've been doing some research on both of these technologies (Hibernate and Velocity) and I still cannot figure out what either of them will buy you.

Velocity claims to be a template-based system with it's own language. From what I have read it doesn't appear to offer anything that EL and/or JSTL already offers. To top it off, Velocity pages don't seem to be nearly as extensible as regular JSP's.

Hibernate is another one that has me scratching my head. It seems to me that if you implement a standard DAO pattern then Hibernate would be just another layer of abstraction. In addition to enforcing some level of tight integration between your object model and your data model it also requires that you learn HQL (to replace the SQL that EVERYONE already knows).

Has anyone used either of these technologies in a real project? If so, how did it work for you? Am I missing something huge here?
