  • Special Collection - Sustainability and the Museum

Sustainable conservation of World Heritage has been directly linked with Goal 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the targets the global community should meet by 2030 to ensure economic, social and environmental sustainability on our planet. But are the methods we are using to maintain and conserve heritage objects so sustainable themselves? How does sustainability play out in the museum? How are collections care and conservation methodologies impacted or improved by efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle treatments, tools and other consumables in the conservation space. How can the museum improve its environmental footprint while ensuring the sustainability of artefacts in its care for future generations?

Environmental sustainability is not the only consideration for the museum. Museums are embedded in the social and cultural fabric of the community, as representations of social and cultural identity, as well as centres of education and outreach. Thus, what roles does the museum have in promoting and maintaining economic and social sustainability? How can museum professionals contribute to a more balanced and diverse representation of heritage? How can we ensure long-term social and economic stability and sustainability of communities while ensuring adequate conservation and management of heritage? Where is development required? What changes are necessary? What can we learn from sustainability initiatives already ongoing across the museum community? These, and many more, discussions will help to inform the path we take as we navigate the role the museum plays in environmental, social and economic sustainability.

With these questions in mind the Journal of Conservation and Museum Studies solicits the submission of research articles and short reports on how sustainability initiatives have, can and will influence museum practice, collection care and conservation science and where development and/or change is needed. Given the topicality of the issue, we aim to publish these contributions as quickly as possible, using a fast-tracked review process. The Journal of Conservation and Museum Studies is a fully open access journal with an APC of £540. We also have a generous waiver policy for researchers without access to funds to cover publication costs. To make a contribution, please register at www.jcms-journal.com and follow the instructions for article submission. An initial deadline for submissions has been set for November 16th 2023. However, as this is an online collection, we will consider submissions after the deadline (until further notice) that fall within the remit of the collection. If you require assistance (or to discuss a potential contribution or fee waiver), please contact Zarah Walsh-Korb, [email protected]
