jest: Betty from Bomb Girls posed as Rosy the Riveter (Betty the Riveter)
( Feb. 3rd, 2013 02:41 pm)
Never say I'm not good to you!

For those who have never heard of it, Bomb Girls is a Canadian tv show about a group of women working in a munitions factory in Ontario during WWII. There are a few male supporting actors, but the main characters are all female and they are all awesome.

Most Canadian shows are produced on absolute shoestring budgets, so I'm a bit stunned by how good this show looks. Even if the writing was crap, I'd probably still watch it because it's so aesthetically interesting, though this could be subjective since it happens to be airing at a time that coincides with a build up of personal interest in the 1940s and WWII history. Check out the screencaps and decide for yourself.

(According to amazon.ca there was a dvd release of season 1, but as it's currently unavailable for order all my caps are plastered with global.tv decals. Sorry 'bout that.)

I love Bomb Girls soooooo much!
Came across this by accident while listening to Spike Jones songs on youtube...

I had no idea there was so much boozing in MLP. This kinda made my morning.

So I can't properly bitch about how nobody told me to watch Bomb Girls, because [personal profile] lasergirl did, in fact, tell me to watch Bomb Girls last January.

Then I forgot all about it until I saw an advertisement for season 2 on the tv at the gym this weekend and I was like ooooohh, pretty!

Brace yourself for future picspam!

A day spent shopping has led me to an irrevocable conclusion:

The peplum is the most hideous thing to happen to fashion since Ugg boots.

No lie - if the shopping centre offered "free day" where you can take home anything you like for free, I would still be going home empty-handed. Everything single thing was horrible and made from polyester.

Why can't I find a non-acrylic black cardigan (without ruffles, sequins, bows etc)? Why can't I find tall black dress boots (without a slouchy shape that does unflattering things to my ankels)? Seriously, I have money that I want to spend! Given the fact that we are living in an age of unprecedented consumerism, it should not be this hard to do so.
Here I am getting caught up on my reading list this bright Saturday morning. After back>100 I came across this image on the Sartorialist. True fact: I bought that fabric from Walmart (or was it Zellers?) when I was 14 or 15 years old and had my mom make me a skirt out of it. The skirt looked almost exactly like the one here. *dying* How the hell is it being photographed by the Sartorialist?

I don't think there is anyone reading this who won't have heard already, but I want to say something about the death of [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27. I feel so sad when I think of her passing, a sadness that seems a bit out of proportion when one considers how cursory my fandom participation has been in the last few years.

Intellectually, I know that nobody lives forever, but the Man from U.N.C.L.E. first cousins have been doing fandom for so long that somehow it felt as though normal human mortality shouldn't apply. When I think of myself getting older, I think of myself catching up to these ladies. It doesn't seem real that [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27 won't be there.

I'm going to miss her.
On the weekend I started a container garden on my awesome fire escape/balcony. It has been, what, three full days now? I am having a really hard time not doing a Miles Vorkosigan on those seeds (aka, digging them up to see if they are growing yet).
I managed to read 70 pages of Death comes to Pemberley before giving up. It is dire.

I got a haircut last night. I don't know why I always feel the need to announce this publicly. Maybe because none of the Engineers noticed? Maybe because of all the years I wore my hair long? Getting a haircut still feels like a slightly wild thing to do. Unfortunately my new cut seems to be a magazine cut, as in, it looks stunning when artfully arranged and viewed from one specific angle, but not so good from all the other angles involved in a three dimensional existence. It feels great though. My neck is all naked and exposed.

I finished reading All Clear. There are lots of nice things I could say about it, but the thing that I found most striking is the way the male character and the two female characters managed to spend a lot of time together without any sort of sexual tension entering into it. Friendship with no subtext. It makes a nice change.

For the weekend I have Death Comes to Pemberley from the library. Anybody read it? Should I be afraid?

Happy May Day!

I'm all moved into my new flat. I absolutely love it. It's not perfect - it gets a lot of noise at all hours of the night from the bar across the street, and unfortunately someone once tried to paint the bathroom sink and tub with wall paint, so that is a peeling, rusty mess, but the light in all the rooms is very good, and it feels so luxurious to have all this space that is mine and mine alone. ♥

Now I just need to buy some furniture...

I've got my internet hooked up, so I am now all caught up with Mad Men! I have lots to say about it, but I'm going to save it for a separate post.

Currently reading Connie Willis' Oxford WWII time travel pair Blackout and All Clear. I got a little frustrated with the story at the start of All Clear when the characters start behaving stupidly and withholding information from each other (presumably this was necessary to keep the plot going, but so irritating). Thankfully, I'm back to enjoying it. I can't wait to get home from work so I can finish it! It's inspiring me to get back to work on that Man from UNCLE time travel fic I was writing.

Speaking of Man from UNCLE...

Have some surprise Man from UNCLE pictures that turned up on a photo community that I watch... )

Shhhh! Did you hear that? That silence is the sound of me being in a house by myself for the first time in about a month and a half. IT IS MADE OF BLISS.

Awww...devoted dogs for the win!

My mother vetoed the flat that I wanted on the grounds that it's in an area where people get stabbed quite often... but would I get stabbed if I had a devoted bull mastiff to defend my house and person? No, I wouldn't.

*sigh*

I really miss having a dog.

I have possibly found a place to live... The landlord needs to hurry up and answer my email. It's been four hours already and I am getting impatient!

(There is also this whole thing where the site was supposed to send a duplicate copy of the message to my email address - but of course it didn't - so now I worry that some hiccup meant that the message wasn't sent to the landlord either, but I don't want to try replying again because I'll look like a crazy spammer emailing twice in one day. FLUMMERY!)

In other news, I didn't go to see the Tintin movie because it looked like it was going to be creepy uncanny valley all over the place, but my flatmate tells me it isn't, so now I'm doing a complete turnabout and I really want to see it in cinema - except, of course, it's not playing anymore in Edinburgh. I'm holding out for it showing for longer in Halifax.

Captain Haddock is my favourite! )

I didn't think it was possible for any character to get tied up and/or knocked unconscious more often than Illya Kuryakin, but somehow Tintin manages it.
Packing...UGH. I need to get my final boxes packed and weighed tonight so that Fed Ex can come take them away on Wednesday. In order to do this I need to make sure all my remaining possessions fit in my large suitcase and that the final weight isn't over 20kg. So tedious! The process involves a massive wardrobe purge of all the things that I don't wear or don't much like. I have a gigantic pile of things I'm iffy about; clothes that are made with really nice material but the fit is slightly off; labels that would be insanely expensive if I hadn't picked them up as a bargain; things that I don't wear because I need to find one more thing to make the outfit work, etc. I suspect if I just wait long enough I'll lose patience and end up donating the lot to a charity shop. I bet I never miss any of it.

I had a wonderful Hogmanay (which is why I've fallen behind on the sorting/packing front) and that was topped by the news that my sister-in-law gave birth on the 31st. I now have a second niece to dote on when I arrive in Canada! I'm pretty thrilled with this state of affairs.

Still haven't finished reading and leaving feedback for yuletide and dtc...apologies to the people I owe comments to.

In other news: watching Downton Abbey has apparently driven me into a state of mad desire to have a ridiculous hat of my very own. I ran out today to hit the sales, seeking one of those faux fur hats that are currently in fashion. I was victorious in my search; however, I feel like it is teetering right on the very edge between smart and silly. One of my co-workers tells me that it makes me look like I should be riding around in a troika and flogging serfs, but he meant that as a compliment so the verdict is still out.
I know you all thought I was watching this show for the realistic plots. Actually, I'm just in it for the hats...

Your main fandom of the year?

I'm still going steady with Man from UNCLE.

Your favorite film you watched this year?

To be honest, I can't think of any noteworthy films that I've watched this year.

Your favorite book read this year?

Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold. On Green Dolphin Street by Sebastian Faulks.

Your favorite tv show of the year?

Downton Abbey.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?

Life on Mars. My flatmate has all the episodes on dvd so I watched it in March.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?

I really wanted to like Pan Am, but it just didn't grab me. True Blood was dull and all my favourite characters died at the end. Reading Terry Pratchett's Snuff made me feel horribly sad because I didn't think it was very good.

Your fiction boyfriend of the year?

I maintain that Napoleon and Illya would be The Worst Boyfriends Ever.

Your fiction girlfriend of the year?

Maura Isles. She's the forensic pathologist on Rizzoli & Isles. I watched two seasons of a really shit tv show for her.

Your biggest squee moment of the year?

I don't know about biggest, but I'm currently re-reading Master and Commander and this part made me squee:
excerpt )

OH JACK! OH STEPHEN!

Your biggest fan anticipations for the coming year?

MAD MEN SEASON 5!
Possible Man from UNCLE reboot movie!
A new Temeraire book from Naomi Novik in March.
CAPTAIN VORPATRIL'S ALLIANCE by Lois McMaster Bujold!

2012 is going to be an awesome fannish year, I just know it.

1. Watched the entire first season of Downton Abbey.

(7 episodes, so admittedly not quite the same time commitment that watching the entire first season of Man from UNCLE would have been, but still pretty impressive when compared to my usual rate of television watching.)

2. Booked flight to Canada on the 16th of January; return to Scotland on July 19th.

3. Found a job in Canada. I start on January 17th. (Three cheers for nepotism.)

4. Made Panforte.

5. Packed 4 boxes of books for shipping and arranged for FedEx to come collect.

Still to do:

1. Read the Man from UNCLE holiday exchange stories and the yuletide Nero Wolfe stories.

2. Sort all my clothes and get rid of everything that a) doesn't fit or b) I never wear.

3. Drink all the whisky since I can't take it with me.

4. Notify the Council that I'm leaving the country.

When I made L. go to the cinema with me to see Master and Commander, I somehow forgot that she gets faint at the sight (and in some cases even the idea) of blood. Ooops. Thankfully I am not yet fired as a friend. I think I should probably give up trying to make other people love that movie as much as I do.

In other news, I started making a Day Zero Project 101 in 1001 list. I was intending to misuse it as goal planner for 2012, except I ran out of ideas at 67 and, when I started browsing other lists for inspiration, I got really put off by it. There's something repugnant about seeing your life reduced to a series of check boxes. It reminded me a lot of backpackers I met in Tallinn who were all getting the ferry to Helsinki and returning later the same day. That short trip gave them very little time to see or do anything in Helsinki, but seeing things wasn't the point. The point was being able to go home and say that one has been to Finland, to check it off the list.

Check lists appeal to me, but I don't want to become that sort of person.
