Bye-bye, LJ

I've had a DW account for years but never used it, but I'm migrating over there now for real. The new ToS agreement is too much, not that I blame LJ. Of course they have to follow the laws of the country where they operate.

I'm johan on Dreamwidth. I don't expect to suddenly become active there, but I will read from that account.

Still here

I read LJ very intermittently, sometimes several times a week, sometimes not for months. But I guess I haven't created a new post for years, so perhaps it's time for that, so you know I'm alive. Maybe I should start posting again for real, as well. Not enough hours in the day for what I'd like to do.

Join us in standing up for reproductive health and education. Planned Parenthood, the organization that delivers reproductive health care, sex education and information to millions of people worldwide, has come under fire in the U.S. lately, with many politicians on both state and federal level seeking to end funding (and in a few cases succeeding).

During the month of May, you can send a specially designed Planned Parenthood vgift to your friends to help support this cause. (And if you need someone to send it to, Imagefrank is always happy to receive gifts!) There are three variations ($1, $5 and $10) for you to choose from, but they'd all look good on your profile when your friends know that you stand by something so important.

Census meme

There's a meme infecting my Commonwealth friends right now, as the UK census draws nigh. As it's quite fun to read the responses, I'll join in.

2011 Living with Imagejlms in a detached house in Storvreta, six miles north of Uppsala, with one cat, Cassandra, her sister having died from kidney failure the summer before. The main reason we bought the house was that it has a large room at the back of the house which was ideal for our library. I work as a technical writer at a software company. It's a job I feel comfortable in and the pay is OK.

2001 Living with Imagejlms in a two bedroom room flat in central Uppsala. We have two 8-months-old kittens, Bonadea and Cassandra, to brighten our lives. We've been married for almost three years. Since a year and a half I no longer commute to Stockholm, having switched to a job in Uppsala as a technical writer at the same software company I'm working at ten years later, but at this time I feel out of my depth. We're hunting for a larger flat or possibly a house, because we feel we need more space, in particular for our books.

1991 Living with my fiancée K. in a small student's flat in Uppsala, thinking of finding somewhere larger to live now that we both have jobs and will be getting married in the summer. I commute to Stockholm where I work as an editor at a games company, editing board games, family games, role-playing games, and fantasy novels. I quite enoy it, but it's very poorly paid.

1981 Living with my mum and my sister in a rather old and charming flat in central Strängnäs, where I attend the Science programme of the local grammar school, although I'm really more interested in languages and history. The passion of my life is Dungeons & Dragons, having discovered role-playing games the year before, and I play several hours a week with a small group of friends.

1971 Living with my quite recently divorced mum and my sister in a flat in a modern housing estate in Strängnäs; they are still building it. I'm a pre-schooler, set to start school in the autumn. I know that I will be a comics artist when I grow up; my favourite comic is Tintin.

1961 I think my parents have just met or are just about to meet, in Katrineholm, where my dad works as a chef and my mum either is an apprentice photographer about to take over the studio where she is working or has just taken it over. She will give up that career when she gets pregnant with me two years later.

After having worked with planning, programming, and programme participant contacts for over a month, several hours every day, it feels great that this year's National Swedish science fiction convention is over. Phew.

Thank you all. Without you et cetera...

Dreamwidth

OK, since the user name johan was still available, how could I resist at least creating an account at Dreamwidth?

If everyone moves over here, so will I. We'll see. Thanks for the invite, [info]jessikast!

Brave little scatterbrain

I let Bonadea, our calico cat, out of the house this morning as usual. After having dressed, I caught sight of her through the window. She had a magnificent bushy tail and watched something in the patch of forest that borders our garden. Another cat of course, I thought, but when that cat materialised so I could see it, it wasn't a cat but a fox. I openened the window so that Bonadea would be able to escape indoors, but instead she faced the fox and hissed. Then the two of them trotted off around the corner.

I don't know much about foxes, but I know they prowl at dawn looking for prey, so I ran to the terrace door and opened it. Out there, just off the terrace, the two animals stood facing each other, Bonadea upset, with bushy tail and hissing and the fox next to her, trying to circle her. I beckoned her to come in, but she just turned her head and gave me a look before turning to face the fox again. I made some noise and the fox, noticing me, started to move slowly away. Bonadea made to follow, but was distracted by me and stayed where she was as the fox trotted away.

By now Linnéa was up and managed to entice Bonadea to come indoors.

I don't know how dangerous foxes actually are to cats, but I suspect she was out of her depth there. Linnéa googled some and it seems that it's very rare for foxes to kill cats, but that's mostly because cats are too fast for them. When the cat doesn't understand that she's supposed to run, I don't know. On the other hand, I don't think the cat's claws are nice for the fox.

Beer update

As I wrote a few weeks ago, I'm listing the beers and ciders I'm drinking this year. New since last are:

Anchor Porter
Archer's Best
Black Forest (Saranac, bottle)
Blackthorn Cider
Carlsberg Export (bottle)
Carlsberg Hof (draught)
Dale's Pale Ale (Oskar Blues, can)
Fuller's Vintage Ale 2005
Grolsch (bottle)
Grolsch (draught)
Guinness (draught)
Harvest Pale (Castle Rock)
Kilkenny (bottle)
London Porter (Fuller's, draught)
London Pride (Fuller's, draught)
Monkey Wrench Strong Ale (Daleside)
Norman's Conquest (Cottage Brewing, draught)
Old Hooky (Hook Norton, draught)
Old Speckled Hen (draught)
Ommegang Abbey Ale
Paradox Islay (Brewdog)
Penny Black Porter (Hampshire, draught)
Punk IPA (Brewdog)
Schiehallion (Harviestoun, draught)
Sign of Spring (Stonehenge, draught)
Spitfire (Shepherd's Neame, draught)
Stallhagens Påsk (bottle)
Stiegl Pilz (Stiegl, draught)
Stiegl Weizengold (Stiegl, bottle)
Summer Lightning (Hop Back Brewery, draught)
Youngs' Bitter (draught)

Disappointments? Well, I'm not mentioning the crap I drank because of a lack of choice, like Kilkenny and Carlsberg. They were bad, but I knew they would be. The Ommegang was probably too young to impress, let's see in a year what time does to it. The Monkey Wrench was OK, but tasted a lot less than I expected. The Fuller's Vintage was too smooth and polished, no bite to it. The yummiest one was the Schiehallion and the most intense one was Paradox Islay. Lovely peat in that one. And the Punk IPA was very hoppy, but on the right side the border. (No, not that border.)

Coyote certainly kill and eat cats, so it wouldn't surprise me if foxes can and do, too, if they can't find anything less troublesome. On the other hand, our rather small skogskatt has been known to…
