Fixes a couple of security bugs. Mostly dealing with faking the SSL certificate from a site, making it a little easier to pretend you are someone you aren't, also an oops that lets a malicious site hide or fake the extension of a file (really only matters to windows users), and an overflow in libpng, that could let a specially constructed image cause damage.
The lovely faeryguinevere was kind enough to drop me at the airport on her way to work this morning...
Here I sit, surfing the net at some $$$ rate per minute, killing time till my plane is available. First stop Detroit then on to NY.
The airport's existance as a well manicured trap to suck money from travellers continues to amaze me. I keep expecting there to be an express line to collect baggage, just an extra $10 and you don't have to wait as long. :-) They have everything else...
Looking at more DVD Players: On shadowray's advice looked at: Samsung DVD-HD931 $250 which turns DVD signal into a HDTV signal (or 480p to 1080i/720p) which the projector can handle and I am sure would look really nice.
The Pioneer PureCinema DV-563AS $150 would also appear to be an option... is in a more reasonable price range, has a number of options for better audio: 192kHz/24-bit audio playback and DVD-Audio and SACD formats. That you don't find in other DVD Players at the same price.
The Yamaha DV-S5650 $150 might also be a considered... though it doesn't have anything on paper that would sell it over the others.
This looks good: DVD Player DVP-NS725P $130 Dolby® Digital and dts® Decoding Compatible Precision Drive 2 System with Dynamic Tilt Compensation Precision Cinema Progressive (480P) Output ref: sony.com
or this... DVD PLAYER DVP-NC685V $250 Dolby® Digital and dts® Decoding Compatible Precision Drive 2 System with Dynamic Tilt Compensation 480P Output Type: Precision Cinema Progressive Technology 5-Disc DVD/CD/SACD Changer ref: sony.com
So what do you get with this other thing that costs twice as much... Disc changer (5 discs)... this isn't anything new... worth $120... don't think so. Color=black... umm... that sony wants to make things silver is nice... really... but to charge extra to make it match everyone else... hmm... More outputs... the NC685 has 2 s-video, 2 composite, and 2 digital audio outputs vs 1 of each for the less expensive version. Otherwise their specs are exactly the same...
So what exactly am I getting with my extra $120... guess I will have to ask an expert... more to come.
I finally got my projector... See previous entry: here faeryguinevere's brother got me a good deal on it.
Looks great... even in my little rooms I get a 7-8 foot diagonal... picture is crisp even when displayed on the wall. Color is much better than what we got from our tv. Feels like you are in a theater.
Going to have to rearrange my living room... need to buy a real DVD player... (currently using my PS2 for dvds, not the best choice, but was the cost effective choice when our previous DVD player died)
I am staying at a hotel with 2,000 other computer geeks. I have a highspeed connection in my room via a Cisco 575 (tech adopted from WaveRunner)... just like everyone else. I still get 170KB (Bytes not bits) transfer rates... tha'ts T1 speed. I would hate to see the bill for their data connection.
The hotel is really upscale. 50 floors in the middle of Downtown New Orleans. The Bed, which can be seen here: ( Read more...Collapse ) is super comfortable, the comforter is thicker than most of my pillows at home.
Thur. moring had an early am Firewall Audit, which went smoothly and took almost exactly the 2 hours I had allocated for it. An hour before I was supposed to be gone for the day my boss dropped a 30 page error report on my desk and said 'fix this'. Scrambled to get that under control and had things patched up around 11:30, a little later than I planned on being gone from the office but not too bad. Met my lovely faery for lunch on campus (at Big10). After she need to return to work I meandered home to finish packing my bags and go through my checklist. Bummed around the house for a an hour or so. floydcollins and charliecopper stopped over about 4:30pm we chatted for a while and we left for the airport about 5pm. Travel to the airport through rush hour was pretty rough, I owe many thianks to my very kind drivers. Checkin at the airport with my E-ticket was painless... and despite the long line moving through security was smooth. Planted my but on a chair at Gate D1 and read a book until it was time to board the plane, which ended being about a 1/2 hour behind schedule. Landed in New Orleans at about 10:30pm, picked up my luggage, waited an unbearable length of time while Budget tried to find a car for me. Drove my newly rented Ford Focus to the Sheraton in downtown New Orleans, handed the car over the valets and put myself in a queue of about 20 people wating to checkin... it was a long wait. It was pretty clear after the 1st 15min of standing in line that things were not going smoothly... so I wasn't real suprised when the Hotel staff informed that there were no rooms left (despite my reservation) and they shuffled over t a different hotel, the Boronne Plaza. The new hotel was able to give me a room, and I crawled into bed about 12:30 am.
