Can anyone recommend a vendor for BLM pins and shirts who is a POC and/or directly benefiting the movement?
Y'all I've had a helluva last few months. Not going to talk about it.

I'm writing letters to political critters starting today. Let me know if you want to hear about it - and if you will pledge to write at least one letter a month with me.
On my way out the door this morning, I just saw an itty little hummingbird on the steps outside my house!!!!!!!!!!

So [personal profile] tb (apparently you are my somewhat-local bird expert), any idea what it was doing? was it eating gravel?!?
I made a delicious experimental dinner today that I made up as I went along! Did I mention it turned out delicious? green beans and egg )

APO75

I'll be in town for the AXcoAPO 75th celebration. I signed up for the Saturday 11am Dorchester project and lunch, and plan to be around Saturday afternoon. Ping me if you'll be around too!

[ETA: Will also be at rededication ceremony and Saturday dinner. Could be convinced to do Sunday brunch too. ]
Last night:

C: You should have some applesauce or some yogurt.
me: Why?
C: Because they help with sore throats!
me: You know... I think we have different things that work for our sore throats.
C: We do? what do you like?

C's list of foods that comfort a sore throat
  • Applesauce
  • Yogurt
  • Popsicles
  • Gooshy foods
  • Cough drops

My list of foods that comfort a sore throat
  • Tomato soup
  • Chips and salsa
  • OJ or other form of vitamin C overdose
  • Spicy or crunchy foods
  • Hot water with lemon and honey

C: Your list is really weird.
me: So's yours!
A few times this week, I've felt ill. The strange thing is that it's only lasted a few minutes at most each time.

Picking out a squash at the grocery store, suddenly I feel the ick that comes with a cold. It's gone by the time I've moved on to the bulk section.

I swivel in my chair at work, and suddenly my head goes light and I feel a little dizzy. I put my hand to my head, wait a moment, then everything is back to normal again.

The little spastic symptoms are starting to make me nervous.....

*coworker walks past my cube opening*
me: Hey! you're supposed to wave as you go past!
J: Can I wave like this? like the queen?
me: Yeah, but only if you walk like the queen.
J: OK, how about this?
me: No! put more regal into it! also, that was too fast -- isn't the queen eighty something years old?
J: More like one hundred fifty.
While I was nursing my second espresso of the morning, one of my coworkers walked up to my cube grinning widely and displayed the following:

  1. packet of salt
  2. 9v battery

(Wait for it....)
Hey rlist, I just made two phone calls:

(1) 202-224-6472 - Senator John D Rockefeller IV, WV, Chair, Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation
"Hi, my name is [ name and county ] and I'm calling to ask if the recent TSA abuses are on the agenda for the oversight hearing tomorrow."
[ Response: something long-ish that boiled down to 'yes'. ]

(2) 202-224-3553 - Senator Barbara Boxer, member of the committee
Option 3 to talk with a member of the staff (no idea if this is better than option 1)
"Hi, my name is [ name and county ] and I'm calling about the oversight hearing on the TSA tomorrow. I want to let Senator Boxer know that I'm really unhappy with the new TSA security screenings at airports."
[ Response: something quick that I interpreted as 'constituent opinion acknowledged and counted' ]

You can see the list of committee members here.
Hey Massachusetts, John Kerry's number is 202-224-2742 -- give him a ring.

It took me more time to write this up than to make these two phone calls.
The past two sunrises here have been absolutely spectacular. Layer of pink over blue over mountains over bay. Today's featured little soft silver clouds that slowly disappeared into the blue blue sky, and I stared out the train window at them whenever we were above ground.

It almost makes up for the fact that I'm seeing sunrise every work day.
A dangerous combination:

  1. Agreeing to the following:
"My favorite way to decompress after a day of work is having a cup of coffee while watching the sunset. Want some coffee?"

  2. Not biking the 3.5-mi with 450 feet vertical climb ride after karate after I've gotten used to having that as an after-karate chaser.

Yesterday was a very enjoyable evening that ended with me way too energetic, way too far past my bedtime!
Some days I'm actually grateful for the 11 minute wait I have between BART and CalTrain at Millbrae. A few minutes before Embaracadero the train stopped and the conductor got on the PA periodically:

"We're stopped waiting for a green light."

"There is a person on the tracks up ahead. BART police are present, and as soon as they've cleared the tracks we can move ahead."

"It turns out the man had a dog with him, and the dog is loose on the tracks."

"The train ahead of us is trying to scare the dog away. They're blowing the air horn to try to get the dog to go to the other side of the tracks."

"The dog just runs along the tracks away from the train and from the police trying to catch him. If he stays on the tracks, we might be here for a while."

Saw the Caltrain as we pulled into Millbrae, so ran my stubby little legs up the stairs, through the gate, and nearly fell twice as I stumbled down the stairs to the platform. Made it through a handful of seconds before the doors closed.

Gotta start practicing sprinting and stairs with a backpack. Or just in general.
Dear Middle-Aged White Male On Caltrain,

The sign says PRIORITY SEATING Passengers Should Vacate These Seats to Make Room for Seniors and Persons With Disabilities.

(1) I am not disallowed from sitting here.
The sign says to vacate to make room. I am prepared to vacate when needed. However, there are three empty seats in this row on this side of the aisle, and another three empty seats in this row on the other side of the aisle. If all of these seats are not required, please do not point to the sign in a disapproving manner and explain in hushed librarian tones that I should not be sitting here as you walk past. When a priority seat is not actually needed, it is important that you not go up to strangers (especially those in a less empowered position than you, Mr. White-Male-Taking-Caltrain), because (and this is important, so pay attention)

(2) just because someone has no visible injury or disability does not mean they
are necessarily able-bodied.

Sincerely,

someone who is generally the first person to offer a seat when needed, and also remembers being an apparently-healthy twenty-something who for months took train+bus to get to/from physical therapy for an injury that prevented her from standing without pain
Today we went to Hell On Earth v2 (Target), returned to Hell on Earth v1 (Ikea), went to a hardware store, and then finally grabbed lunch and did the weekly grocery run at Berkeley Bowl West. After dropping stuff off at Home v1 in south Berkeley, I took the rest of the cargo to Home v2 in north Berkeley, where I ran a dishwasher load of newsprinted glasses and cleaned the bedroom closet and bathroom (mostly taking down cobwebs and evicting insects) and did some unpacking. The cobwebs and cleaning felt a little like the beginning of Totoro or Coraline... a parallel that did not rest easy after dark. I was glad to get called to dinner at Home v1 as the creaking began.

Yesterday is a blur featuring unloading the crate, a long scouting run of Hell v1, a little unpacking, and Cheeseboard pizza dinner.

I actually had trouble remembering that we unloaded the crate yesterday.

This is going to be a long, long month.
