I was at an interview today. Fourth one for the past 2 months. I actually start enjoying them - it's sort of like a monthly test on how competent you are at web development : )
The company is Netomat, Inc. The job is Web Interface Developer The project is a weird mix of RSS feeds delivery and social network with support for mobile devices...
The whole process reminded me of a verbal college test where you sit and talk with professor. I don't know if they do such things in US schools but that's how I used to fail my university exams back in Russia :)
About 40 minutes, about 20 questions. Development process, XML, AJAX, doctype declaration, usability issues, Javascript libraries, common cross browser issues and back-end integration. I failed one question on "the difference in .gif and .png opacities" :) Here's a freaking answer for those who are interested. In two words the difference is in alpha channel support in .png images and ironically is exactly what I use every freaking time I apply IE transparency hack (filter: progid: DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader (src = "some_bg_img.png", sizingMethod = "crop") for background images.
In the end we just started talking about how they teach CS in colleges and how cool it is to start learning programming with Pascal : ) How Java based applications are more time-proven at the moment comparing to RoR, have a greater support and community. How easy it is to work through XSLT and how Google Reader is superior to Bloglines : )
I have one more interview scheduled in the beginning of the next week so we'll see how it goes...

dnScoop is a new Domain Check tool that estimates approximate value of a website based on such factors as links, Traffic (Alexa), age of the domain, site category, domain keyword popularity, and overall occurrences of the domain name on the web. The process of checking is nicely ajaxified and provides some really useful info such as Page Rank, domain age and inbound links count. I just checked wehike.net and apparently it's worth $345
Unfortunately their poor shared hosting is unable to handle all of the hits now that it got to a digg's main page so I couldn't check other websites we have. |

So here's what I was up to lately:
We ( mx_ & kangax ) decided to create a team blog to write about all kinds of web development crap.
I set up Google AdSense text ads for this blog and as of today the total earnings are $1.21 (that's in 6 days). In case somebody is willing to help us feel free to click on those links on the right :) I got involved in bunch of social places (mostly for SEO and our website promo) myBlogLog LinkedIn Facebook MySpace digg 43 ThingsI realized how much exposure one can get using what some call social network promotion technique. Google stats show that there were 125 unique visitors within a little more than a month with an average of ~4 visits a day (yes, I know, it kinda sucks...) Here's a top referrals list. You can see that most of traffic is coming from myBlogLog which I "spammed" using some clever scripting. From 452 people who viewed my profile only 48 actually visited the website. That's something like 1 out of 9 and it's really not that much. |

So I finally have a normal desk to play work at. Before I had 2 DELL boxes covered with a blanket and as I just realized (while throwing them away) a 19" CRT monitor inside one of them. I got it from a friend of mine - he just bought a $2500 desk set (oh yeah that shit looks nice) and gave me his old one. It's not new, but it looks very solid and clean.
