A Summer Time Quilt

Well it started out as an Autumn quilt, however when I put in a very thin wool batting and finished quilting it I found it was perfect for my bed in summer. Not quite big enough for a Queen sized bed, however it looks okay and makes me happy to look at it.

It is a pattern from Sherri McConnell of A Quilting Life and was in the April 2024 American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. It was fun to make, I used mainly Bountiful Blooms by Sherri and Chelsi, but had to add in some others as I only had a fat eighth bundle to use.

A Baby Quilt

Baby Quilt

Recently my niece had a wonderful little girl. I haven’t met her, she lives too far away, however I have seen a photo. When I said to my niece I’d make a quilt for the coming baby she sent me a photo of the kind of quilt she wanted. I photo searched the web but couldn’t find a pattern.

In the end I used some blocks from a Lori Hold book or a few QALs I had done. I started out with appliqué, but soon got sick of that, I prefer piecing.

I used fabric I had and hoped they went together! I had thought pink, but I guess the beautiful pink fabric can be used eventually that I have stacked away now for a long time.

What Was I Up to In November 2024 in Quilting.

I haven’t posted for a long time but I just paid for another year because I can’t stand advertisements on my blog!

This year I have been following Sherri McConnell’s patreon group and each month we work on a number to move a project along. I like this, as it doesn’t have to be finished, rather focused on for that month. Sometimes I do finish something off, sometimes just move it along.

This month it came about that I was to work on the hexagons I was making as I wanted to make Sherri’s Bloom quilt pattern. I had been making these hexagons for a long time, mostly not working on them! So this month I got them out, looked at the pattern and decided to make the quilt slightly smaller and that will give me a throw size and i am happy with that. So hexagons finished. Now I am hand sewing them to the background. For the edging I decided on a Corey Yoder fabric. I had a fat quarter so I knew what it was like. I have used that now and am waiting for more to appear from FQS. Maybe another week as it has left the USA.

It is a scrappy quilt using up some fabric I had for the hexagons. I really like the grey surround made of HST’s.

Plans for the last two weeks were

  • Next Blockheads block. Well its been two weeks so two blocks2 latest Blockheads 5.
  • Quilt the stars on the Oh My Stars quilt and then add binding. Done, this was just the small size but that’s okay by me. I used Cozy Up 5inch squares and a border from that fabric. Stars from my stash. Oh My Stars.
  • Start in on making the edge blocks, half and quarter B blocks  for the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, then start sewing rows. I did get this done and all the rows are together. I am really not in love! I used different colours, which did not quite work. However it was all those points and small blocks that did me in. The back of this top is very messy!! It’s not for me, I don’t mind a BOM but I am a person really who likes to know where they are going!  Thanks to Bonnie Hunter anyway, she is very talented with scrap quilts.Mystery 24
  • My February WIP turned out to be the 3″ blocks I’d made during Sewcialites 2. I’d made 12 of them so I will turn them into cushions. (pillows) I have completed one.Cushion 1
  • Finally I am making a temperature quilt with the free pattern from FQS. January is finished and the block made. A tree is for the last day as there are 31 days in January. I am using scraps from my stash, on the back of the quilt I’ll put a key to each fabric. The dark pink is 27-28 degrees C.  which is about 82 degrees F. However it has not been so much the temps as the humidity that has been the issue.  Very high.January temps

Plans for the Coming Week(s)

  • Make another cushion (pillow)
  • Make next Blockheads block
  • Maybe trim the edge of the mystery quilt and then sew a lap to keep the stitches firm. I am going to eventually add a border but I am not putting on the final pieced border. Had enough!
  • Keep the February temperature block going.
  • Whatever I feel like working on.

  • Make Blockheads next block.  Done. 61/2 inch blockMB 3.
  • Make the BOM by Sherri at A Quilting Life. My fabric arrived – a Coriander fabric Peachy Keen.  Done. This is a 161/2 inch blockBOM AQL 24.

  • Start in on making the edge blocks, half and quarter B blocks  for the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt, then start sewing rows.

Last weeks plans

  • Continue quilting the Oh My Stars quilt. Have finished quilting the interior of the quilt, still to do the borders.
  • Complete sewing up the Block A’s then move on to the Block B’s if I get that far. I have completed the Block A’s and half the Block B’s. My work with the tri rec rulers was not that good but I guess the way to learn is to try. Would have been better if I had someone beside me, I did do You Tube videos. Could have been my ruler slipped a bit on me. I did the centre of this block in the wrong colour, but as it turns out it was a happy mistake as the Block A’s are rather dark when put into the layout.  Using Anne of Green Gables fabric.Block B mystery
  • Make the next Blockhead block. Oh was this fiddly to do. It has nearly cured me of the 61/2 inch blocks, should have been going for the 121/2 but didn’t want a huge quilt. Using Edyta Sitar fabric.Blockheads 2!

Plans for the Coming Week

  • Finish making the Block B’s, and then the edge blocks, this is a quilt set on point (Bonnie Hunter mystery.)
  • Make Blockheads next block.
  • Make the BOM by Sherri at A Quilting Life. My fabric arrived – a Coriander fabric Peachy Green I think it is called.
  • Quilt the borders of Oh My Stars
  • Keep up the temperature quilt, into the third week of January now.
  • Box and post away the four NICU quilts.
