There goes a whole weekend. I just finished episode 20 of the first season. On Saturday, I had never seen an episode of Heroes before.
Now, it's 3AM on Monday morning, and I'm debating watching the rest of season one before I go to bed. Meanwhile, I've got meetings tomorrow, work, and homework to be doing. I'm getting so behind on everything.
The internet is dangerous. Now I remember why I've avoided good television for so long. It was less hard with reruns of Buffy and Angel where at least I knew what happened next - with Heroes, it's all new! |
|
So I made it to work today because I was getting worried about missing the whole first week of school. I managed to completely forget to buy my books (though luckily, all the reading I need to do for tomorrow was on E-reserve). I am at work, and about to leave it because I feel horribly sick again and can't concentrate (I almost did get back into bed this morning, because I felt nausea when I stood up, but it went away after lying down again for five minutes).
It seems quite likely that I have a sinus infection - so tomorrow, I'm going to go back to Health Services and get checked out... I'm trying to decide if I should just use the Z-pack I already have or wait until I go to see them... I've got all the symptoms of a sinus infection (including the ever-painful sinus pressure).
The worst part about all of this is that I've got a show tomorrow evening that I need to work, and I haven't gotten a chance to go down to the space and check out the equipment... Which was buzzing and humming and all-around giving me issues last time. On the other hand, I've scheduled four hours for set-up tomorrow, which is plenty of time to set-up stuff (and even to test it!). So hopefully, we'll just cross our fingers and whatever teh issues from last semester were, they'll be gone. Pretty please? |

So the apartment building I live in has a laundry room. This is a nice convenience when the weather is icky and I wouldn't want to take my laundry anywhere else. Also, there's the fact that I don't even know where the nearest laundromat is - my understanding from where the staff who lives in Hill House is that they go across town, near Bronxville (way farther than I could carry my laundry!).
At any rate, the part that I've not yet understood and still don't, is why does our laundry room have 6 washers but only four dryers? Especially since these dryers tend to be not very good and not always dry everything the first go-round, so sometimes a load will need to be dried twice... This creates a horrible back-up of the washers.
And now, to make matters worse, one of the dryers is also broken! *grumbles* I'm gonna be late if I don't get my clothes dry before I need to go (since this is clothing I'm wearing at-con, I needed to wash and dry it!).
[edit] Update: So apparently, the three machines were all in use by the SAME GUY! I'm fricking pissed. I hate it when one person ties up more than half the available machines - it's like, dude, spread your laundry out a little bit (also, who the hell does that much laundry in the middle of a day on a Thursday? why is he even home? *grumbles, grumbles, grumbles*) |

So I saw a meme in jetshade's journal about making poetry out of the first line from the first 20 songs on shuffle... So I loaded all my laptop music (about 28 hours worth - very little compared to my total mp3 collection) into winamp, and proceeded to do the meme.... Except then my little creative editor decided he wasn't happy with all of the lyrics that popped up. Some were out of artistic order, some fit better in a second poem, and some didn't quite work at all (two lines out of 27 generated were completely). SO I wrote two poems - both only use the first line from the songs that popped up in winamp on shuffle (though, as I said, I rearranged some of the lyrics). The titles are also from the first line of songs that popped up. Title: Yeah, burn it up, yeah burn it up, yeah burn it up, yeah. She fed me strawberries and freezer-burned ice-cream If the light does not reveal what I'm feeling for you It's just a simple line Where's the girl I fell in love with? It's day break, and you are asleep The whole world cried, but I was dry It doesn't matter what I want, it doesn't matter what I need. You've got a lot of weight to bear you found hope, you found faith I've never had a way with women, but the hills of Iowa make me wish that I could, Most days are like all of the others: It's been one week since you looked at me Go ahead, push your luck Yeah, yeah, that's right (we talk about your work, how your boss is a jerk) “Caught a lite sneeze” look at my mouth, just a thin painted line. Another poem: Title: Will you lend a caring hand? Any dolt with half a brain (can see that humankind has gone insane) I won't forget when Peter Pan came to my house, took my hand he's a drug store truck-driving man The spice melange, it's so cinnamon sweet, in through my veins, without brains. Teenage cuties sell out stadiums in the blink of an eye Yeah, if I run away... |

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test... Modern, Cool Nerd For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd. Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). I got a working phone again, but it's because I put my sim card into our spare phone, not because mine was fixed. Fed ex picked it up today, and I should get it back sometime this weekend... Though I'm honestly not likely to pick it up from my mom's house until probably when I leave for Arisia/after Arisia, since I don't think I have real concrete plans to be home again after I go back to my apartment tomorrow (which is really later today).
Just FYI - this means I am once again reachable by phone/text. |
|
Don't try to call me in the next day or so - my phone died last night, and I need to get it repaired before any calls will come through.
*sigh* Fucking Nextel. I can't wait until I'm on a better network. Please, dear god, let there be a better network. |

Kate: "I just couldn't... - My whole life has been about being a cop. If I'm not part of the force it's like nothing I do means anything." Angel, still looking pretty beat up: "It doesn't." Kate: "Doesn't what?" Angel: "Mean anything. In the greater scheme or the big picture, nothing we do matters. There's no grand plan, no big win." Kate: "You seem kind of chipper about that." Angel: "Well, I guess I kinda - worked it out. If there is no great glorious end to all this, if - nothing we do matters, - then all that matters is what we do. 'cause that's all there is. What we do, now, today. - I fought for so long. For redemption, for a reward - finally just to beat the other guy, but... I never got it." Kate: "And now you do?" Angel: "Not all of it. All I wanna do is help. I wanna help because - I don't think people should suffer, as they do. Because, if there is no bigger meaning, then the smallest act of kindness - is the greatest thing in the world." Kate: "Yikes. It sounds like you had an epiphany." |

So originally, when I made my reservation for the hotel, I only reserved two nights - Friday and Saturday. The con goes from Friday-Monday (and Thursday is set-up). I'm rethinking this plan now, since it seems likely I won't have classes on Mondays (or even possibly Tuesdays! depends on whether or not I get bumped from this Friday class).
I've checked the megabus website - I can get a bus up to Boston for $1 on Thursday evening, and for $6 back on Monday... I just need to find crash space. And theoretically, transportation for me and my stuff (not too much stuff, I promise!) from South Station to said crash space.
So now I put it out to all of you, my friends - does anyone have crash space available either Thursday, Jan. 14th (I wouldn't get to Boston until 9:50PM) or on Sunday night, Jan. 18th so that I can come home on the 19th instead?
I've got a room for Friday and Saturday (and one roommate, with a high possibly/probably of a second).
On Jan. 14th, I don't actually technically need to be at the hotel (since I'm not an insane dept. head this year), so if you've got crash space in the greater Boston area, that would also work. On the Sunday night, I do need to be at/near the hotel (otherwise, what's the point?).
Let me know if you've got a space for me. I'm pretty easy-going about where I sleep (and these, unlike my Friday/Saturday rooms, would just need to be places for me to sleep). |

I don't have an iPod, so I never found a reason to download iTunes.
Until this summer, with the Dr. Horrible Craze, in between when it went off-line and when it became available (with commercials) on Hulu, and Dr. Horrible wasn't available anywhere. Except on iTunes. So I downloaded iTunes and bought the series. And when the sound track was released, I bought the sound track.
And that's all I've used my iTunes for. Until just now, I thought that was all I COULD use it for.
Right now, I'm sitting in the physics lab in the science center. I was the math resource center tonight (not that anyone showed up), and so I brought my laptop so I could do some homework (play games). I was looking at my iTunes just now, and I noticed that there were a whole bunch of people on the lower corner of my iTunes that said "Shared." I've never seen that before.
Because I'm on a college network, there are tons of people with shared iTunes. So now I'm listening to someone else's music on my computer, and it's great! I know what I'll be listening to in the library during conference week! |

Only I would manage to accidentally overwrite a short blog response to a weekly reading. For both of my classes, I think I've way over-written what was needed. I almost overwrote this blog, but then I deleted the extra words, realizing the irony of this post. |

As some of you may remember, my car was having overheating problems for several months. I took it into my mechanic, and he did a lot of work and charged me $1100 for all of it. That was less than a month ago, and it's already started to get warm a couple times. I'm not happy.
Worse, on Sunday, it started making this awful grinding noise that alternated being a scratching noise. Then it became more constant. I did move-out on it (what choice did I have?) on Thursday, and it continued to get worse, added in an occasional soft, but high pitched squeal. On Friday, after graduation, the noises continued to get worse on our way to the restaurant in White Plains. Coming back to the Bronx, a squeak was added to the squeal (which got worse when I braked), and the grinding (which followed the pattern of my wheel) got louder and more consistent, and the scratching/scraping noises continued.
It's currently parked outside of my friend's house for the weekend. On Tuesday, I plan to have AAA tow it to the Subaru dealer (approximately 2.6 miles away) to have them take a look at it. Not only is it significantly closer to the dealer than to either of the mechanics I've used around here, at this point, I don't trust the one in Queens much - the guy missed a lot of problems, didn't fix the tire correctly, and hasn't been good at helping me to maintain the car (knowing that I'm a new owner and knowing my family, and knowing that I don't know much about cars and asked them to let me know what work I had to get done - and then the guy guilt tripped me about not maintaining the car correctly - did not make me happy, let me tell you!).
So, now I'm starting to think about new cars - well, new to me. I just got a hefty graduation gift from my mom, and the way my car sounds, I think it might be heading for a car purchase. So, my request to all of you:
If you know of someone selling their car, If you know of a good dealer to buy from, If you know of a good mechanic who will look at a car once I've found one I like, If you know of anything that will help me find a good used car,
please let me know!
Thank you :) |

I'm a graduate. And with the end of my undergrad days, I begin my bachelor days - for a year. I start at SLC in the fall for my Master's program, and will be graduating again in a year - with a spiffy hood.
And now that I'm not dying from homework, I've decided to rejoin the LJ community. I am thinking about starting a new livejournal (or possibly just changing the name of this one).
I'm not gonna lie - a big part of the reason I'm getting back on LJ is because I'm procrastinating cleaning my mom's house - boy did I move a lot of shit home from school! oy. |
|
I've really enjoyed the last 8 years of posting in this journal. I've written a lot, and I think I've come quite a ways since the high school years. I just used http://www.ljbook.com/ (thanks to aralna who commented on nyren's journal) to create a pdf of my journal (and I really enjoy the pdf - it's quite nice, actually!). The reason I'm making this archive (one reason, anyway) is that I'm not sure when I'm going to post again. Part of it is because of the fact that I'm not sure how I feel about SUP and I know a one-day content strike isn't going to do jack shit to make them notice, but a bigger part of it is because I'm wondering if I've outgrown this particular journal or livejournal in general. My usage stats have declined in recent times, and that's not gone unnoticed by me. So if you want to keep in touch with me, check out my facebook, send me an email or AIM, or give me a call. Spend some more face-to-face time with me, and we can stop being frustrated over lack of conversations because "oh yeah, I read that in livejournal." of course, going hand-in-hand with my decision to stop posting is the fact that I will be reading almost nothing on my friends-page anymore. I have been lagging behind in that department anyway, what with the ten-million journals that I've currently got friended. If you want me to be up on something that's going on in your life, email me at boykit on gmail or send me an AIM to kgola. |

The demands are as follows: 1. Restore basic accounts for new account creation. 2. Inform users before any change to the site that affects how we use the site or demands on our resources. 3. Run change proposals by the Advisory Board and take their advice into account before implementation of any change. 4. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate. |
|
Dear Livejournal, I have been a great supporter and long-time user of Livejournal. I started my account in December of 2000, and in that time have posted 1,993 entries and 7,009 comments. I have generated a lot of traffic for Livejournal, receiving 7,763 comments in my journal. And now, for one of the first times, I am seriously considering leaving livejournal. I am upset by the way that SUP notified the users that basic accounts had been removed. Rather than being up front about it in the actual news.livejournal.com posting, the announcement was couched in the guise of stream-lining the registration policy. Only after users noticed and commented on the removal did SUP choose to finally acknowledge their actions. This action was taken in opposition to the recommendation of the Advisory Board. Furthermore, I am disheartened by the news that livejournal has been censoring the interests of its users. Homophobia, misogyny, and racism must not be a part of the decision making processes about appropriate content of the site, including what user interests are deemed appropriate. Many of the users of Livejournal are adult and their interests may be adult in nature. Flagging adult content was barely acceptable; to eradicate our interests from your front page is a slap in the face. If you don't want me and my sexuality on your website, then be upfront about your discrimination and I, and more than half of your users, will leave. I will not be posting any content from 8PM EDT today until 8PM EDT tomorrow as part of the content strike. I am sick of being told that companies don't listen to the consumers; I won't continue to be a consumer if nothing is done to resolve our complaints. Sincerely, KGola [note] I will not be posting any content from 8PM tonight until 8pm tomorrow. I have changed my homepage so that it is no longer my friends page. I am disabling comments on my journal until after 8PM tomorrow. I don't support every reason that the content "strike" was formed (if LJ wants to eliminate basic accounts, fine; there's still the free option of plus accounts - and yes, I'm aware it's not technically a strike, but since that's what it's being called, I'm going with it), but I strongly disagree with the methods by which LJ's users were informed and information was hidden. I also protest the homophobia and sex-phobia of LJ. See the facebook group for more details: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=8938219462 |

For those of you who don't already know, there has been a strike scheduled for Friday, March 21st, 2008, during which we hope to have many members of LiveJournal provide LJ with absolutely no content for twenty-four hours. This means no posting and no commenting. If you post elsewhere and have it set up to be posted through a feed on LiveJournal, don't do it. Stay away from LiveJournal for twenty-four hours. That can't be too hard, can it? I know some of you are probably quite active on LiveJournal and will find it hard to stay away for an entire day, just as I will, but this is something that needs to be done, to show the people running LiveJournal that we're watching the changes they are making, that we're paying attention, that we're discontent, and that we want to be heard and taken in to consideration. We are not simply users who can be tossed to the side and ignored. We are the people who make up LiveJournal. Without us, without the content we create, without our words, our voices, our creativity, our participation, there would be no LiveJournal. This is a fact, and it needs to be realized and understood and then taken in to consideration when making decisions regarding the way that LiveJournal is run. The strike is only a few days away, so there isn't all too much time to prepare. While this is unfortunate, it isn't enough to keep this strike from taking place. It will take place, the second it is meant to, and it would be best to have as many people take part as possible. Please, spread the word. Spread it fast. There are only a few days to organize this. If you find that you care about LiveJournal or care about the people you interact with on LiveJournal or simply want it to remain a place where you can entertain yourself without constant censorship and money-hungry practices being thrown in without the consideration of those who use the service, act now. If you don't wish to spread the word, that is fine, but please: refrain from using LiveJournal on Friday, March 21st. Do something else for a change. It's for a good cause. :) For background on this strike and why it is being held, please read the following posts: http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/394838.htmlhttp://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395310.htmlTo find out exactly when the strike begins and ends, depending on where you are located, please see this: http://beckyzoole.livejournal.com/395125.htmlWhat's this about? * It's about free and ad-free LiveJournal accounts being abolished for new members, ignoring the advice from the newly-formed Advisory Board. * It's about LJ staff trying to sneak this decision in under the radar, and when people found out, telling the users it was done 'to make the signup process less confusing'. * It's about LJ staff failing to apologize for trying to hide the facts from view and for lying about the actual reasons for their actions. * And finally, it's about the latest decision to hide certain user interests from the list of Most Popular Interests, some of them being fanfiction, bisexuality, sex and depression. This decision was not announced or explained in any way. Users found out for themselves. |

So I realized that Lunacon starts off my spring break on Friday, and I'm not even sure who's going. Obviously I know shadowravyn is going because she helped me get the ticket and I know doompuppy and londo are going because apparently I'm sharing a room with them, but I don't know who else is going. So I ask my f-list now - who will be at LunaCon next week? |

For my mom to talk to... She came home from PFLAG tonight, and asked me a bunch of questions about whether I had a lot of trans-friends, particularly with parents who were supportive.
Basically, her PFLAG group suggested she talk to parents of other trans-people - but lacking any themselves, I guess, told her she should ask me if any of my friends had supportive parents who she could talk to.
Thus, I ask you, my f-list, the following questions:
1. Are you or any of your siblings transgendered and transitioning (either socially or physically?)? 2. If so, are your parents supportive? 3. If you answered yes to questions 1 and 2, would you (and your parents) be willing to let my mom talk to your parents? She said (and I quote!) that her phone lets her call anywhere in the country for the same cost. So she doesn't have to meet them in person, if they're willing to talk over the phone.
I know some of my f-list likes to respond to all of my questions, but in this case, I'm gonna ask that unless you answer yes to questions 1 and 2, please don't comment (it will make it easier on my inbox!). |

There are a lot of you who're listing me as a friend that I don't recognize. Let me know who you are, and I might add you.
But, since it is spring cleaning time, I might not. I'm going to be going through my LJ and cleaning up my friend's list a little bit. I post a lot lately, and I realized that I'm not sure who is on my friend's list anymore.
Part of it has to do with my posting, part of it has to do with my reading - it takes me hours to catch up on LJ... I should probably change my homepage to my.slc.edu until I graduate, or I'll continually get distracted! |

So I'm (possibly) running a Buffy RPG this semester.
The time? Season 8 comics are canon, and we're basically current with the first 9 issues. The setting? Worcester, MA, location of another hell-mouth (none of you are surprised, I'm sure!).
The premise? Well, with Buffy setting up the slayers into cells, and distributing them around the world, some got sent back to the good ol' US of A. Unfortunately, these cells look an awful lot like terrorist cells to the U.S. Government, and they're not happy with Buffy destroying Sunnydale. Or her minions continuing to live in the U.S.
My game will follow the slayer cell stationed in Worcester, MA, as they deal with their latest threat (of both monster and government).
Anyway, if any of you are close enough to want to come up to SLC for a weekly game (probably 5 episodes in season 1, and possibly a season 2 if people are still interested) of Buffy, let me know. I'm still looking for a couple players.
Otherwise, I'm asking those of you who are familiar with Worcester to give me advice about actual locations that I can modify and use for my purposes. Right now, I'm probably using Spider Gates (a "haunted" cemetery, near Worcester's Airport) and Liquid Sky (before it shut down, obviously). I'm looking for a few others.
Anyone know anything about Bancroft Tower?
Thanks! |

Only in LEAVING the engineering school did I realize how big the... distrust toward engineers by scientists are...
In my physics class this semester, my professor (and now my research) have both indicated that physicists doubt certain things that engineers do because they feel the engineers may not truly grasp the underlying physical principles.
So I put it out to y'all, my rather sciency/engineery bunch. What do you think about scientists and engineers? What do you think about new and "crazy ideas" in sciences?
(as a grounding, the class I'm talking about is called "Crazy ideas in Phyiscs" and is designed to teach us how to distinguish pseudoscience from science and from sloppy science...). |

I got back 200 entries and realized the futility of trying to catch up with your lives. If something important has happened to you recently, either comment here or send me an email at boykit@gmail.com |

One of my classmates is writing a "rather theory-laden paper on transgender and/or trans-sexuality, and was looking for a grounding point in lived lives"
He already read Jamison Green's book, Becoming an Invisible Man (because it was my course reading), and he found it lacking a bit of self-awareness in his process (though it's possible my classmate just didn't like Green, he said). He's looking for othertestaments to trans-life journeys, perhaps even poetic or artistic ones, in which people expressed themselves differently.
I've suggested She's Not There, by Jenny Finney Boylan, and Butch is A Noun by Bear, but I'm wondering if y'all have any other suggestions for him. |

Had to go back to skip=550 before I managed to read 'em all! |

So I don't typically get to read LJ during the week... So i decided I would try to read some LJ and catch up this morning before heading to the city. I'm now running a little behind (because I wanted to leave early to allow time for traffic from the marathon), and I've gone back 450 entries and I'm only at October 29th at 8:39AM!! Ridiculous, folks.
Never let it be said my friends' page is quiet! |

This post is prompted by my thoughts on a couple responses I made in the WPI lj community. The article Battle Lines on ‘U.S. News’ ( http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2007/05/07/usnews) discusses the on-going revolt of some colleges against U.S. News and World Report's rankings system, particularly their methodology. SLC has been one of the fore-runners in protesting - we dropped from 45 in the liberal arts category in 2006 into siberia in 2007 - an unranked category containing 17 other colleges, most relatively unknown. Why? Because SLC hasn't used SAT or ACT scores in a couple years to determine admissions - and no longer had any data to send US News... I've been at SLC a little over a year now, and I've yet to take an examination. Does that mean that my progress hasn't been recorded or that I'm not being held to high standards? No, quite the opposite, in my opinion. I've written a tremendous amount of papers and I actually remember a startling amount of detail from my various papers - unlike some of my classes at WPI, which I can barely remember the introductory material from (because I crammed for the test and forgot it later). So would a standardized test reveal anything to SLC that seeing a student's grades and recommendations and writing doesn't? Only who can pay for the best test-prep. So SLC doesn't collect that data anymore. And when U.S. News threatened to make up the values for those scores - ranking SLC at 200 points below the average, former president Michele Myers protested. She wrote an Op-Ed in the Washington Post and New York Times, and critiqued US News. Other schools joined in the critique, and there's now an on-going battle. Anyway, the article I'm specifically referring to at the beginning of this comes into relevance around here. One of the major problems with the rankings is that 25% of a school's ranking is based on peer review - or essentially, gossip among other school administrators. With smaller schools, other administrators may not know as much about them - probably part of why WPI may suffer in the rankings. The school administrator called on to rank the other colleges? The college presidents. I believe it's around 65 presidents who refused to fill out the peer-review information this year; not a tremendous amount yet, but enough. In the article, though, Brian Kelly, the editor of US News, is quoted as saying, "College presidents don’t have the right to say that only they can decide how institutions should be evaluated, Kelly said." Except that according to US News, the college presidents do decide how institutions are evaluated - at least 25% of it. It's no wonder that Princeton, Yale and Harvard always have the top three spots - EVERYONE knows something about them, and knows good stuff, typically. Plus, they have large endowments. My personal problem with the way the rankings work is that it's based primarily upon two factors - peer review (25%) and endowment (another large-ish percentage between 10% and 20%). Other factors that get taken into account are not balanced against trade-offs (spending on students vs. tuition; faculty:student ratios vs. hours spent interacting with a faculty, or my favorite - selectivity - if a school eliminates students who aren't qualified before they apply, how can they "turn away" enough students to be considered "selective"? just because you accept 80% of the students who apply doesn't mean you can't have high standards - it just means you have good applicants). Furthermore, I find it problematic that (like one of the articles I read said), the "input" values of a school are being evaluated, with no look at the "outcome" of students - what happens to graduates of these various places? Anyway, I just wanted to post my thoughts on this issue here, because I'll probably be pointing some of the people from the wpi community here to see this entry so I don't have to type it again. And yet, I'm STILL up - go insomnia from illness. I tried to fall asleep, and failed twice... I don't think it helped that I slept all day Wednesday after 3:30PM... [edit] And one other thing: "Their decision did not reflect a lack of concern about providing accurate, comprehensive information to help students and their families make decisions about college...These academic leaders (the Annapolis Group is an association of 125 of the nation's leading independent liberal arts colleges) believe the choice about which college or university to attend is vital -- and too important to leave to an inherently flawed rankings methodology. The largest single factor in the U.S. News rating formula is a reputational score compiled from a survey that asks college presidents, provosts and admissions deans to rank schools' academic programs on a scale of one to five. It is unrealistic to expect academic officials to know enough about hundreds of institutions to fairly evaluate the quality of their programs." (Katherine Haley Will "Breaking Ranks: A College Can't be Reduced to a number in a magazine", Washington Post Monday, July 9, 2007; Page A15, http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/08/AR2007070800922.html). Basically, my point in quoting that article is that one of the criticisms against these presidents is that they're preventing the free distribution of information about their college. But really, it's not fair to ask them to rank each other in the manner US News is requesting. Plus, you can't reduce these schools to a number. And frankly, relying on faulty methodology is preventing enough information about the schools from being distributed. Hence the formation of U-CAN (university and college accountability network http://www.ucan-network.org/id.10,id2.659/default.asp) to provide accurate data about schools - linking in some cases directly to the school's website providing information. I tried to find WPI, but only four schools from Worcester list info (including Holy Cross and Clark). MIT is listed on there, as are other colleges who are typically thought of as "prestigious". Now the trick is to move everyone over. [/edit] |

As some of you may remember, I've gone to seen screenings of Buffy's (in)famous musical episode, Once More With Feeling on the "big screen" at the IFC a couple times. Now, I just read in the buffy musical's myspace blog that the rights have been yanked from Fox. "Fox has pulled the license for ALL their TV shows from theatrical exhibition." This doesn't just mean Buffy, but the entire Joss-verse - and more importantly - ANY show who's rights are owned by Fox. What sucks is that these screenings were keeping Buffy alive - and had the support of not just Joss Whedon, but even some of the actors themselves. Now, I know that part of the reason they've done this is because Fox needs to decide how to handle theatrical screenings of their shows. Stuff has to be sorted in terms of payments of residuals and deals with guilds and such. However, that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do. You can start by signing the petition that the Buffy Musical Sing-A-Long group has put up at http://www.msplinks.com/MDFodHRwOi8vd3d3LnBldGl0aW9uc3BvdC5jb20vcGV0aXRpb25zL0J1ZmZ5TXVzaWNhbA==Article information from: http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=118565851&blogID=317920066&Mytoken=9DE81F99-F3DF-4855-A7B09EEC00190CD748456277 |

When I posted my question about the suit in the fall formal post, I realized many of y'all actually understand men's fashion (something I'm trying to work on)! So I'm gonna ask a couple more questions I've got about matching and levels of dressy-ness.
First: what's the difference between a suit jacket and a "sports" jacket? In terms of look (i.e. if I've got a black coat that I can't tell what it is, how would I know).
Second: if I'm wearing a black coat (jacket? blazer? I don't know the terminology), what color pants are appropriate? If I wear khakis, does that dress it down a bit? Can I get away with various shades of gray (light or charcoal). Do I need to wear black pants with it/Can I wear black pants with it?
Third: Do blue and black go together or no?
Fourth: how does one match shirts and ties to pants and jackets?
Fifth: Vests and Sweaters - thoughts? Colors? |

So I downloaded "Worth the Wait" by Tom Smith (an awesome Filker) from tomsmithonline.com. And I was listening to the lyrics, and it says:
When it was we met, I don't recall I'm not sure we even spoke at all But then, by golly Sci Fi club at Worcester Poly Started something and it wasn't small Every moment that we shared was great Even though back then we didn't date It took a while, but everytime I saw you smile I knew it would be worth the wait
And I'm convinced the "Sci Fi club at Worcester Poly" refers to WPI's SFS, which (in my opinion!) is awesome. I emailed Tom Smith to find out for sure, because the lyrics for this song aren't posted on his site yet. Anyway, I just thought I'd share with any of y'all who're into this kinda thing. |

The Inauguration of Karen Lawrence as the 10th President of Sarah Lawrence College was this morning. It was a nice ceremony, quite well attended (though not as many students as some people thought there'd be, I wasn't too surprised). I think it will be interesting to see how this next era goes with our new leadership.
Anyway, now I'm hot and sweaty, and I'm gonna take a shower before I head to the symposium "You Can't Step in the Same River Twice: Reimagining a Liberal Arts Education in the 21st Century" (or something to that effect). |

I'm too busy doing homework to go to services or to dinner... Whee! |

And stop the feds from preventing us from getting our porn! Stop Section 2257. Go to http://www.thetaskforce.org/activist_center/say_no_to_section_2257 and read more. But do it quickly - there's a deadline to protest of September 10th. Tell the government "I want my porn!" |

So you're all aware that I'm a pretty big fan boy of Faith from the show Buffy. Anyway, she's (the character is) the reason I started reading (and writing) fan fiction. I'm a part of a couple LJ communities for buffy fanfic, including one challenge community. I saw a challenge last week that I couldn't resist (since i already had this written), and it won the moderators' choice! I'm mostly so thrilled about winning, that I feel the need to share. (please ignore the timestamp on this post; I should have been asleep HOURS! ago!) Here's my banner (and the link to the story that won it!): |

As of yesterday, I am now the possessor of three official, court certified orders that state I am now to be known as Kit Marlow G---- and only as Kit...
w00t me! |

So of all the items stolen (and the list has grown since my original statement that not much was taken), the item I miss most in my softball glove. It was in there because I brought it up to CT with me when I visited R so we could play a game of catch.
For my birthday, my mom bought me a Rawling's replacement. I got to choose it out at the Sports Authority, and everything (and let's just say everyone who came with me was bored outta their minds waiting for me to make up my mind).
Now that I've got the glove, I'm doing the most important thing - breaking it in. I think I need someone to play catch with since that's really the best way to break it in. I'm getting bored throwing the ball into my glove from two feet away.
Also, though, I'd forgotten how much work goes into breaking in a glove. It feels rather like breaking in a new pair of boots, actually! |

So when I was working at the museum this week, in the hall of African Mammals, NBC was there recording my co-worker Christian. They asked us if they could test their cameras by recording us, and didn't tell us we'd be on TV...
Turns out they used a clip of me and Jesse teaching these tourists about the stuff on the African Mammals cart... Kinda nifty, if I do say so myself! |

Today, after work, I hopped on the subway and went to the Manhattan court house. I ran back and forth a bit (the notary is apparently in the basement of the OTHER courthouse), and finally after about forty-five minutes (including waiting time, and four different lines/counters in two buildings!), I got my little stub and receipt that says I have to be back in court to appear before the judge on August 1st at 11am. I'm so excited, it's ridiculous!
*pumps fist* Yes! |

It's this weekend, and I haven't been since March - anyone interested in going with me on Saturday at midnight? It's $15 at the IFC theater on W3rd and 6th Ave. I've had a lot of fun at the three I've been too.
Check out Buffysings.com for more info. Let me know ASAP if you're interested so we can make plans.
Also, my cell phone is currently sitting under a lamp, drying off after being poured on today, so I probably won't have a phone for approximately 24 hours. Way to go me and my defective phone - I hate this piece of shit and can't wait for a new phone eventually. |

So I'm looking for somewhere to stay nearby (in P-town or not), and I'm wondering if anyone here has any experiences in the area. It's gonna be four people in two beds/one room, as cheap as possible and as close as possible. let me know if you've got ideas, thoughts suggestions, or places to avoid! |

So I got bunch of a number of journals on here. Mostly it was people I don't know too well, journals I don't really read that much, journals that aren't used anymore, etc. If I removed you, but you think it was an accident or you still want to read my journal, let me know and we'll talk about it. Comments are screened. |

As soon as I turn in my evaluation for MP to Westland's, return my books to the library and return the mini-hub to the ACD, I'm done. I'm already effectively done with course work.
Now all that's left is moving out. It'll be a process spanning the time between Saturday and Wednesday.
For now, I crash as I'm exhausted and about to fall asleep (I've seriously had like, 10 hours of sleep since like, Sunday!). |

Why is it every time I hear/read Barnard, I think Bard? Could it be the similarities in the words (subtract the "nar" from Barnard and you get Bard!). My brain/ears need to be fixed. |

So I've recently started watching Tru Calling on TV-Links... This is the show Eliza Dushku decided to star in after Buffy ended rather than go to a Faith series (it was partly Joss' fault - he didn't have a complete offer to give her in time, so she left).
Anyway, most awesome reference to Buffy - Doug Petrie, a Buffy writer, wrote the episode "Haunted" for Tru Calling. In it, Tru is talking with this girl who she's trying to save (and thus has been infiltrating her school, her friends, her family), and the girl goes "Just how single-white female are you?"
Why is this awesome? Because in Buffy, in Faith, Hope, and Trick, Dushku's first episode as Faith, Buffy said "You're not the one being single-white-female'd here" to her mom in reference to Faith being close to her family, her watcher, and now her fries...
Still never seen the movie, though. But i just wanted to share the funny reference. |
