Challenge #2: Pets of Fandom

My beloved angel, Catleen "Ms. Bean" Hanna died in August of 2024, but I currently live with my queer-platonic partner and we have two living cats, Temeraire and Rusalka, and their parents live in the in-law apartment with their dog Shadow!

My beautiful bean was my best friend and the love of my life for many years before I lost her. She moved cross-country with me four times, was with me through so much, was always so cuddly. She loved to lay on my chest and purr and yell and I miss her so much every single day.

Temeraire is a disaster. He yearns for death and expensive surgeries and is always trying to eat things that will kill him. He's also the sweetest boy. He loves to snuggle and purrs so loud and is just one of the most beautiful cats alive.

Rusalka is a secret sweet girl. She doesn't like anyone but QPP who she has severe attachment issues with (from being a COVID kitten), but after 3 years of living together, she's learning to love me too and even lets me pet her and will choose to sit with me sometimes (a HUGE accomplishment).

Shadow is potentially one of the smartest dogs alive. He's so funny and energetic and we are pretty sure he genuinely speaks English thanks to a hilarious and somewhat horrifying experience on a raft one day that I sincerely wish I had been present for.

Challenge #3: Write a love letter to fandom.

I have had some very mixed experiences in fandom spaces, from the phenomenal to the traumatizing, but I am so grateful for the friends and family I have found in fandom spaces. As a socially awkward teenager turned chronically ill/disabled adult, it has been my one consistent source of community and has meant so much to me. Historically, I've been somewhat of a serial monogamist when it comes to fandoms — my hyperfixations come on strong and they take over/push anything else out of the way, usually, but while the spaces I engage in come and go, so many of the most important people in my life are people I met in fan spaces. I met my QPP in a McElroy adjacent Good Omens discord server in 2017/2018 and I am so grateful to the small group of us who remain and who have become family to me, including my QPP.

Fandom encourages me to be creative and inspires me to write, to make art, even just to get out of bed when times are really hard like they have been the last year and a half.

I'm

killerqueer 🐉 I go by R — I'm in my 30s, my pronouns are they/he, my favorite color is green and I live in the Pacific Northwest of the USA! I'm a crafter (knitting/sewing/etc), I've been in fandom spaces on and off for over 20 years at this point, and I am both a fic writer and an artist! My current hyperfixation is Knives Out (specifically Wake Up Dead Man), but I am also into M*A*S*H, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Star Trek, Avatar: The Last Airbender (OG Cartoon ofc), Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-files, Les Mis, and many other fandoms! I have also been studying Spanish for the past year and have made quite a bit of progress, which I'm very proud of!

I'm a little late to the party, but I just found and decided to do do the

snowflake_challengebecause I've been wanting to get more active on Dreamwidth/maybe make some friends in a more connection-based, old school forum like this. I've been really struggling the last year and a half, both materially/physically and mentally/emotionally. I lost my job due to budget cuts in August of 2024 and have been on that unemployment grind for the last 18 months which is seriously killing me, and my various chronic illnesses and poor mental health have been really putting me through the wringer. Other online spaces have been tough for me lately, so spending time on a more slow-paced/less popularity-contest driven style of social media is particularly appealing to me. I hope that I'll be able to make some new friends/find folks with similar interests to me!

Re: ship fics, I particularly love getting together fics, but I also enjoy an established relationship as long as it's got something to drive the story forward! Basically, for ship or gen, I love some conflict - as long as there's a happy ending (this doesn't have to mean everything is perfect for everyone involved, but as long as there's a happy or at least hopeful ending, I'm happy!). Third person POV please, is the one thing I'm firm on!

As for specific content that I enjoy: Yearning. My soul for yearning. Mutual Pining. Incredible. For gen, loving/supportive relationships in general. I love banter/witty dialogue - generally my favorite characters tend to have that about them so when it gets incorporated in fics, I really love it. I also love an ensemble story so if there's other characters/ships featured in the background, that's always fun, but is not a requirement by any means. I really love when a character who has a lot of pressure on them - either from those around them or that they put on themselves - is made to rest/let someone else take care of them for awhile. I also enjoy when characters are made to question concepts and/or parts of their identities in ways that could drastically alter the trajectory of their lives. Love kissing/cuddling and smut that is tender or kinky or both - whatever you desire as long as my DNWs are kept out of it. I know it's losing favor for understandable reasons but I do love miscommunication/poor communication causing problems kind of fics. For established relationships, I love seeing people learning how to be together in new ways like moving in together for example, or foraying into polyamory and learning how to be a good and loving partner to more than one person, etc.

I feel like I'm rambling now so I'll stop, haha, it's just difficult to say "what I like" in fan content because I'm generally pretty easy to please - I like most things outside of my DNWs. Oughhh this ship has captivated me completely over the last few weeks. Apparently the Kind-hearted Priest/Righteous Non-believer dynamic will fucking get me every goddamn time. I love the way their relationship develops over canon - the way they are together, the way they're drawn to each other, the way Blanc manhandles Jud/will shout at/be infuriated with him in ways he never was with Marta or Helen, but all the while being so endeared to him/captivated by him/in awe of him. Jud being in awe of Blanc in return in his own way. Blanc's clear religious trauma vs Jud's kind, open, acceptance. Jud's guilt/need to make up for it by throwing himself on the altar of crimes he did not commit vs Blanc's determination to finding justice/truth/to saving Jud from himself and the people who have happily attempted to frame him. The way they bicker, the way they question each other. I feel like I'm not being very eloquent here, but everything about them is making me go insane.

As for further specific likes/loves: Catholic guilt (obviously lmfao). Slow burn, mutual pining. Jud confessing to Bishop Langstrom (whether about having feelings for Blanc in general/wanting him or if it's post acting on it), and being so afraid that this will be the last straw/that he'll have to leave the priesthood if he isn't able to let go of Blanc, but Langstrom surprising him by being chill about it (it's reported that only about half of the priesthood are estimated to remain celibate, consensual relationships with other adults are incredibly common, a kind of open secret among the clergy), and not condemning Jud/kind of trying to ease his anxiety about it/telling him that it's more common than he thinks/etc/what have you. Blanc is tbh giving divorce era in WUDM and I'm so here for that but also down for infidelity wrt Phillip or Blanc and Phillip still being together/being open/Poly/whatever. Whatever direction you want to go in wrt that, I'm here for it. Angst/Hurt/Comfort with a happy/hopeful ending. Jud and Blanc continuing to have their back and forth about religion while being (for the most part, in Blanc's case,) respectful of each other's belief/lack of belief, and Jud not ever trying to convert Blanc. Explorations of Jud's past. Cy and his lawyers harassing them abt Eve's Apple as a catalyst that keeps bringing Judblanc together/giving them opportunities for their relationship to develop. If you wanted to incorporate Marta or Helen as part of the ensemble/part of Blanc's circle, I would be down, but it's not required! I could go on about Judblanc, probably, but I'll leave it there.

I hc Daniel as being very loving & accepting of Hawkeye's queerness and I would not want to receive something that shows him not in that light, but other than that, the world is your oyster!

Some specific prompt ideas (though feel free to disregard if you have an idea you're excited about), in no particular order:

Daniel noticing the ways Hawkeye is different (read: queer) throughout Hawkeye's life - maybe seeing it before Hawkeye does as a kid or noticing it but not saying anything outright until Hawkeye is ready to tell him himself. being very loving and accepting when Hawkeye does come out or if he perhaps caught Hawkeye & Tommy messing around or something, idk. could go in many different directions, whatever you want!

I love the way their relationship grows throughout canon from coworkers who barely tolerate each other to tentative/begrudging respect to friends to best friends (Margbeejhawk best friendship is so real to me). I would be happy to receive something set in any stage of that relationship trajectory, though I do have a slight preference for the final three stages (though if you have a great idea for the 'coworkers who barely tolerate each other' face growing past that, go for it!)

Whether or not you go w/ canonical false alarm or actual pregnancy up to you, but would love to see something about that episode through the lens of that circumstance, If she is pregnant, having Hawkeye's support of whatever decision she makes/being there for both verbal/moral comfort as well as physical affection and she decides that she needs to get an abortion, both for her career/future in that sense, and maybe even for the marriage she's still trying to save. Even if Hawkeye has offered to "do the right thing" and told her he'd marry her if she wanted to divorce Donald (I especially love this in regard to them not necessarily even trying to kid themselves that they could work as a long term romantic partnership, but discussing the idea of doing it as friends for their kid). Them both having feelings about that, even if they know it's what's best.

I love to think about them having something going on throughout the war and they get to indulge in each other whenever Sidney comes through the 4077th for poker night or to see a patient, and also love to think about the ways in which this maybe becomes more fraught as the war goes on and Hawkeye becomes more unstable, especially when we get to the finale. I also really love to play with the idea of them having been together or even just having had a fling when Hawkeye was pretty young (perhaps he went to undergrad in NYC and met Sidney in the queer scene there somehow?). I like to think of him having made quite the impression on Hawkeye (and vice versa tbh!). Either just exploring that on it’s own or their reunion when they meet again at the 4077. Charhawk

There's a lot to love about Charhawk and so many different ways you can read it - I love a flexible ship. I do prefer the directions where Charles' more human side is leaned into, like the episodes where he either has a softer side or has been humbled in a way that makes him re-evaluate pre-conceived notions he had about himself or those around him rather than digging his heels in. I love the way they bicker and snipe at each other, but still have that begrudging at first but eventually genuine respect for each other, both as physicians and as people.

Some prompt ideas (recycling the ones i came up with for the Hurt/Comfort exchange, but Hurt/Comfort doesn't have to be the theme, if you have another idea, go for it!):

sfw or nsfw: one of them is hurt (physically or emotionally) and the other is surprised that that he came to them instead of someone else - How/why he is hurt/why he didn't go to BJ probably (if hurt Hawkeye) or someone else or the surprise being that he came for help at all (if hurt Charles) is up to you! Perhaps the hurt character is sick but not seriously injured and wants care. Perhaps they have a head injury and, in their current state of no filter, kept asking for the other who they've been secretly pining for or keeps disclosing things that will embarrass them later. nsfw: charles becoming an agitated control freak and needing to be dominated sexually to calm down and is bad at asking for it - What it says on the tin. The tag I wasn't expecting, but when I saw, knew it was perfect for this ship. Would love to have this maybe be an ongoing situation that they don't instigate often, especially since Charles is so bad at asking for it when he needs it, and they don't really talk about it ever outside of the occasions under which it happens (probably because Charles avoids any attempts Hawkeye makes to talk about it/discuss boundaries), so perhaps some amount of under-negotiated kink. But it's basically fallen into a pattern of Charles getting worse and worse, more and more insufferable to be around (I love him but he can get insufferable lmfao), and eventually it reaches a peak where something or someone is going to blow, so Hawkeye tracks him down, makes sure they have privacy and doms the hell out of him until he breaks and calms down/gets what he needs.

Charles is also surprisingly (to Hawkeye, esp if its the first time it's happened) kind about it in the aftermath/doesn't mock him or use it against him or anything. It's just good and what he needed and maybe leaves off in a place either explicit or open ended agreement that if he needs this again, to just say so/do some kind of safe word/signal and Charles will be there to help him again in the future. sfw or nsfw: sons and bowlers episode tag - I love how gently but insistently Charles is there for Hawkeye all throughout this episode and I would love to see something in the aftermath of the episode. we're coming up on the one year anniversary of my entire life falling apart, including being laid off from my job, my cat dying, and several other things all occurring within the span of about 2 weeks and my mental health has been sinking rapidly for the last couple of months as we get closer and closer to the anniversary and nothing gets better/everything mostly just continues to get worse. but today i had to go to the pharmacy (my shoulder is in excruciating pain and it seems like something is genuinely wrong, moreso than just having Body Is Constantly In Pain Disorder) and this also finally meant being able to ask after the film i dropped off months ago that no one ever called me to tell me if it was ever developed and which i never had the spoons to follow up on until i had to go to the pharmacy for medical reasons today.

which meant getting the rolls of film from right before catleen died, as well as the trip to minneapolis to meet some dear internet friends last fall. there were apparently only 8 shots on the roll of the cats and almost every single one of them came out completely illegible thanks to terrible lighting and me not having used a film camera in probably almost two decades. but the one photo that did come out was this one of ms. bean. and she's so beautiful.

i couldn't bring myself to wait until i got home to see if any of the photos of her came out and so i opened the envelope while waiting for my meds and god i just wept in the middle of the pharmacy. i miss her so much. everything happened so suddenly and all at once last summer and my entire life collapsed around me and the most devastating part of it all was losing her SO suddenly when we had just been told by the veterinary cardiology specialist that she had at least another year. she was chronically ill too, we both had multiple conditions but she had been having such a strong upswing for a few months and then all of a sudden her health just fully crashed and burned right after i lost my job and there was nothing i could do.

we (and by 'we' i mean my partner and our friend bc i am too physically disabled to have been able to do the manual labor) buried her under the fig tree at our new house and it was such a nightmare. the earth was so dry and full of rocks and so hard, it was an awful time of year for it, and it took two nights just to get the minimum 3 feet down and in the midst of it, we had an asbestos scare when we found what looked like construction waste buried in the ground from the 70s when the house was built (a common practice back then). it ended up not being asbestos thank god, but it was such an awful several days at the start of an awful month leading into an awful year.

my birthday is in 11 days and the anniversary of things falling apart is two days after that. idk if i'll ever be able to celebrate my birthday without thinking about that awful time in my life. i genuinely am surprised i'm still here, to be honest, this past year has been so bad. i'm not looking forward to the next year, things have not been looking up and i can't imagine them getting better, really. i don't even want to do anything for my birthday at this point but i feel like doing nothing would be even more depressing. idk. i don't have the energy to plan anything though and i don't really expect anyone else to either, we're all having such an awful time over here, tbh. so we'll see. i'll probably just do some doordash driving just to get out of the house and maybe make enough money to get myself a treat and then curl up in bed and do nothing.

but the first figs of the season are starting to ripen so maybe i'll eat one tonight.

With 6 hours spent listening to ¡Cuéntame! yesterday because of time blindness, I not only reached level 4 in Dreaming Spanish but surpassed my goal of hitting 300 hours by the end of April by 5 hours!

Technically ¡Cuéntame! is a little easy for me (CI-wise) at this point but I've been enjoying re-listening to it at a more advanced (read: early intermediate) level because, while it was at a good comprehension rate as a beginner, I'm now catching a lot of things that I didn't in my first listen through! There are still occasionally things that I won't fully understand every word but will at least understand through context clues, and it's nice to see that progress! I've mostly been working through the higher difficulty rating beginner content and the lower difficulty rating intermediate videos that DS provides lately, but it's also nice to go back to lower level/early beginner audio format content like ¡Cuéntame! on days when I have a lot of things to do that require physical labor but not a lot of brain power, like cleaning/driving/hand stitching/etc. (Not to imply that those tasks don't require focus/skill, but I can enjoy easily comprehensible Spanish content while doing so in the same way I can listen to native English speaking content while doing these tasks).

Some more personal notes:

I also love that Marta does each episode at a very slow super-beginner/beginner rate (with occasional English hints when there's little or no context for what a word means like there would be in video content) and then repeats the same content speaking faster/without those hints. I remember the first 100 hours of super-beginner video content was such a slog to get through — the DS Guides do their best, but there's only so many times you can listen to/watch most of it without getting mind-numbingly bored / feel like you're being talked to like a child. This is not helped by the fact that most of the super-beginner content feels like it was intentionally made to be child friendly, which is a good thing to have, of course, but it can be frustrating when you're a full ass adult and it's all that's available, haha. But my QPP kept telling me to keep pushing and that once I hit 100 hours, it would feel so much better/easier, and that I'd be able to hit my daily goals easier, mostly due to there being a wider variety of content. But yeah that first 100 hours was rough and when I finally felt ready to try something outside of DS and tried ¡Cuéntame! it was amazing. I was so shocked and delighted that I could easily understand what was being said, even without visual clues, and even in the second half when she was speaking much faster than I was used to. It was so motivating and In the last few months since I passed level one, I've been slowly increasing my daily hours just because I can and I'm enjoying it!

But anyway, I'm just really proud of myself. Doing Dreaming Spanish every day for the last 4.5 months has been really empowering/affirming. I've been going through a really hard time for the last 8-9 months ~~(Hawkeye Pierce voice: I could have had nine tenths of a baby by now!)~~, taking hit after hit after hit and feeling like I can't drag myself out of the pit I've been knocked into because every time I drag myself towards the surface something else knocks me right back down. Someday I might get into it on here, but a big thing has been my long-term unemployment. The current job market is humbling (read: devastating) in the most brutal way and I have felt so useless. But it has at least given me the time to focus so much energy on my art and on learning to speak another language — something I have always struggled with. I know I wouldn't be able to spend 13 straight hours hyper-focusing on learning animation through trial and error or spending 3-6 hours a day most days (with a base minimum of 1 hour/day) studying Spanish if I was still working full time. And while I am desperate to become employed again (because as much as I actually do probably need to be on Disability tbh, I am afraid to be recognized as disabled by the state in this current political climate, and the only reason I did not become homeless several months ago is the kindness of my QPP/their parents), this has been one of the few bright spots of the last 9 months.

Like I said, I have always struggled with language learning and tbh, I spent most of my life wishing I could be multi-lingual but failing every time I tried and eventually just assuming I was too stupid to learn a second language. But finding Dreaming Spanish and actually having success feels like when I discovered I was autistic and realized the reason I had always struggled in school was not because of me being incapable but because of our educational system not being built to set even high masking people with learning disabilities (because it took me until I was almost 30 to accept that even my ADHD was a learning disability) up for success. Traditional language learning methods didn't work for me and that didn't ever mean I was stupid or lazy. I just didn't have the resources to know that other methods that would work for me were available.

I wish that schools made things like CI (Comprehensible Input, by the way) available to students, even if only when traditional methods don't work for them at the bare minimum. I have always had so much respect for anyone who can speak more than one language and I would never try to denigrate the functionality of traditional methods for the people they work for — which I know is many! But they don't work for everyone and language learning would be so much more accessible to so many people if alternative methods like CI were more widely encouraged instead of dismissed by a lot of the language learning community as I've seen. I think part of the reason that it can get a bad rap is because of the bullshit fake CI apps (Lingopie, for example 🙄😡) that are just like "yeah just watch foreign language TV with English subtitles!" and call it CI. But denouncing the actual method of Comprehensible Input over bad faith actors putting out things that aren't CI and don't work and calling it CI, is a critique of the wrong thing. When you're doing real CI you are watching/listening to videos/audio content that is made specifically for learners at your current level of difficulty that you can follow through visual aids and context clues (and without subtitles) and not moving forward in difficulty level until you have consistently reached at least 80% comprehension.

Like, I tried watching Avatar: The Last Airbender in Spanish recently because QPP said it might be accessible for me now, and I decided not to count it as CI because even though I could understand it if I slowed it down to .75 speed, that made it less enjoyable, and the only reason I could follow it at all at full speed is because I've watched ATLA hundreds of times. Watching a foreign language show that is too advanced to comprehend without subtitles is not Comprehensible Input, just like painting a design on fabric is not embroidery. And to be clear, just like there's nothing wrong with painting designs on fabric, there's nothing wrong with watching foreign language shows with subtitles — that is a good and enjoyable thing to do! And not only is it valuable just for the enjoyment it brings, it also broadens your worldview and you may even pick up on a few words or phrases with enough time watching them. But it is not CI (for the majority of people).*

As I explained above, CI is a very specific thing (words mean things!) and it has not only helped me learn a new language but has also helped me become a better listener in general and given me more faith in my own ability to learn, even though I'm getting older and language learning is already going to be harder for me now than it would have been if I'd had this resource when I was a kid. And I know that if something like Dreaming Spanish had been available to me in high school, it would have made such an incredible difference in my life.
So for anyone with ADHD or even anyone in general who have found language learning difficult in the past, I cannot recommend the CI method enough.

Spanish CI content I have tried so far/has been recommended to me:

☆ Dreaming Spanish — Available on YouTube and the Dreaming Spanish Website

DS is a fully fleshed out library of content with thousands of videos spanning from super-beginner content (comprehensible even if you've never even said "¡Hola, soy [your name]!" before) all the way to advanced/expert level content. If you use their website A large amount of their videos are available for free, though there is a paid membership for $8/month that has more videos/full series/etc. I find the premium membership to be worth it (one of the few things that I have continued paying for through my unemployment until my QPP offered to pay for it when I finally reached the point that I couldn't keep paying for it it). That said, it is not necessary and I have heard from friends who exclusively use the free content that they have been using it for months and still have not run out of free content. Additionally, I have talked about finding a lot of the super-beginner content really boring but there is some good older content in that level and they have really been killing it lately on improving the variety of their SB content.

Lastly, I do personally recommend making an account on the website (which you can do for free/without signing up for premium). Their interface will track your time and it can be really encouraging! They also have an app that is in Beta right now for Apple and I do like it. I prefer using it on web because of the unofficial reporting extensions I use/that show numbered/user generated difficulty ratings even if you're not filtering by difficulty (Dreaming Spanish Insights and Dreaming Spanish Toolkit).

☆ ¡Cuéntame! — Links to Podchaser, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, though likely on other Podcatchers as well.

I explained the format of ¡Cuéntame! above, but in short, it is a podcast made by a woman named Marta who is from Mexico and now teaches high school Spanish in Wisconsin. Each episode is 5-10 minutes and she talks about everything from Cats vs Dogs to explanations of holidays to show how to talk about them in the language to various subjects about Mexican culture/history, and everything in between. I began listening to the podcast at about 100 hours, but I probably could have started much sooner. I think the podcast is probably accessible even to a lot of complete beginners, it just depends on what your personal level of confusion tolerance is.

☆ Destinos — Free on YouTube: Episode 1 / Episode 2 (bootlegs with Russian? subtitles), Episodes 3-13, Episodes 14-26, Episodes 27-38, Episodes 39-52.

Destinos is a telenovela made specifically for language learners to teach Spanish. It was made by the University of Illinois and is very corny, but also fun and incredibly 90s. The basic premise is an elderly man is dying and calls his family together to share a secret he's been keeping from them their whole lives. They send a lawyer (for some reason? instead of a private investigator?? lmfao) named Raquel that is a friend of his brother on a journey to try to find someone, so you follow Raquel on her travels to Spain, Argentina, PR, etc — various Spanish speaking countries, so you get experience with different dialects and you also learn a bit about the cultures/dialects of these different places.

It starts at a very beginner level with a decent amount of English mixed in that decreases as you go (iirc, they stop using English at all after episode 10?), and the difficulty level increases throughout the show. I would recommend starting the show around 100-150 hours I think? I started around 150 hours and I think if I waited much longer, the English at the beginning would have been really irritating for me. But the difficulty also scales somewhat rapidly and I eventually had to take a break because it started surpassing my comprehension level. For context, I believe the above playlists are sorted by difficulty level — technically I watched through to the end of Episode 38, but I think I only had decent comprehension until around episode ~30, so I think I'll probably rewatch the 27-38 playlist before continuing when I pick it back up, which I think I'm probably more than fine to do now. I may have to pause again though when Destinos starts reaching more Advanced levels, we'll see.

That should get you started but there are SO many other Spanish podcasts/video content for learners made independently that are also available, the above is just what I've checked out so far!

As far as I am aware, there is no fully supported platform like Dreaming Spanish with a full library of content that spans from Super-beginner to Advanced for other languages**, however, there are CI Resources for other Languages! I haven't tried them, but I'll link some things here that I've seen as a place to look into if you want to try CI for additional languages. I will also include resources that I have found helpful that do not count as CI. I will specify which I have personal experience with:

☆ The Comprehensible Input Wiki

"This wiki is intended to provide a list of resources for people hoping to learn a language using comprehensible input." I haven't spent time here but it has links to CI resources for literally DOZENS of languages from ASL to Italian to Zulu to Biblical Greek and Hebrew. A wealth of information seems to be available here and it seems like a great place to start if you're looking for content in other languages.

Again, I haven't spent much time here but it's a community for people wanting to apply Dreaming Spanish's methods to other languages They also have a "What I'm Listening To" spreadsheet that currently has tabs for Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, and Russian.

☆ Lingvano

An app to learn ASL from d/Deaf/HoH instructors. I have used this app and found it incredibly helpful! There are videos showing you how to sign and not just the signs but also the grammar (not just Subject/Object/Verb order, but also the ways facial expressions and area in relation to your body where you do the sign), and some stuff about d/Deaf/HoH culture. I don't do this every day like I do with Spanish just because I don't have to capacity to put such intense hyper-focus on both, but ASL is my secondary priority re: language learning and I think this is a fantastic resource for beginners like me.

☆ HelloChinese

An app for learning to speak Mandarin. I have used this app and found it incredibly helpful! As previously stated, my primary focus has been Spanish and my secondary focus ASL, so I haven't spent a TON of time on Hello Chinese, but I found it incredibly accessible and while it is in some ways a more traditional style of teaching than CI, it is — in my opinion — SO much more genuinely helpful than Duolingo. They have interactive lessons in not only speech but also to teach you to read and write Chinese characters. It came highly recommended by Chinese folks on Red Note and is a fantastic app. I will probably spend more time here when I'm next ready to put more focus into a fourth language.

*re: the above "But it is not CI (for the majority of people).*" — This is my personal stance as well as the stance of the majority of people I've seen in the CI community on Reddit. THAT SAID. As much as my brain loves the simplicity of a simple black and white statement, nothing ever is. My QPP has been doing Dreaming Spanish/CI for over a year now and has, I believe, fully reached the Advanced level, and they watched content that was above their comprehension level a lot in the early stages.

Our brains work very differently and whereas I get hung up and stressed and don't enjoy myself if I'm not solidly hitting 70% comprehension (even if I've just moved up to a new difficulty rating and even if the content available to me at my current level is boring as hell), for them, valuing interest over comprehension (within reason) has been very successful for them, because if it wasn't keeping their interest, they would get bored and not do it. We both have ADHD but I also am Autistic and even if I weren't, ADHD isn't the same for everyone.

If you're desperately struggling with the content available to you and want to try something above your level (again, within reason) to see if it works for you, I think that's okay! Just be real with yourself and how much time you count while calculating your hours (if you track them).

** Dreaming Spanish is working on developing content for a second language. I don't remember if it's been announced and this is official or if it's just an educated guess from the DS community, but we suspect it will be French.

with all the rumors flying around on tumblr, i've been glad to see more people considering trying dreamwidth. like. do i really think tumblr is going to shut down? no lmao. they've had so many nearly identical false alarms that it's almost comical. but i do hope the conversation makes people think about picking dreamwidth back up or, if they weren't around for the time that LJ/DW were more popular, about trying something new. i really miss the lj days and i love the way dreamwidth's UI prioritizes commenting/direct communication. i think it has the potential to kind of revive the actual community aspect of fandom that seems to be dying on tumblr.

i reached out to support today about taking on administration of the dead m*a*s*h communities at already exist here. if the old admins are inactive but want to retain control, i can just start a new community, but i think it would be nice to revive the old one(s). there's a lot of community events/projects that would be fun to run here that i've been wanting to get going and, while they've been on the back burner for a few months due to my personal life and mental health being on fire, i'm starting to feel that prickle of motivation again for the first time in a long time, and i really hope it sticks around.

i've been preparing to have a conversation with someone soon regarding a situation that has been really difficult/hard on my mental health and depending on how they respond, things could go really well/improve but they could also go really poorly. they've been really kind in all our interactions since i reached out a few days ago, so my hopes are a little high, but i'm trying not to let them get up too far because i just don't know what they're going to say, and my luck (in general) has been non-existent for a long time. but i've been punishing myself/self isolating for months and i'm reaching my breaking point. i'm so nervous and i've prepared what i'm going to say to start the conversation (basically laying out all of my shit but like. explicitly in a morally neutral way just to let the other person see where i've been coming from) because i'm not very good at winging it and i'm so afraid of saying the wrong thing and being misunderstood, so it helps to have everything written out. but also i worry that that's annoying and adjnfalla. anyway. i'm anxious and i hope it goes well, but if things go poorly, maybe i'll still be able to build a nice space here, but if they go well, maybe i could have both.

I also love an ensemble story so if there's other characters/ships featured in the background, that's always fun, but is not a requirement by any means. I also enjoy when characters are made to question concepts and/or parts of their identities in ways that could drastically alter the trajectory of their lives. Love kissing/cuddling and smut that is tender or kinky or both - whatever you desire as long as my DNWs are kept out of it. I know it's losing favor for understandable reasons but I do love miscommunication/poor communication causing problems kind of fics. For established relationships, I love seeing people learning how to be together in new ways like moving in together for example, or foraying into polyamory and learning how to be a good and loving partner to more than one person, etc.

Whether you want to do during the war or post war, I love it all! Also love genderfucky/gender non-conforming Hawk but that's not required. Love it when Trap calls people 'Honey' in canon and that being turned on Hawkeye in fics 😍 My favorite thing about this ship is how well they work together, even without words. They are so in tune with each other whether for mischief making or otherwise and I love the way they can work like two halves of the same whole. Whether dancing in Yankee Doodle Doctor, harassing Frank or the brass, being Radar's Aunt and Uncle, and even/especially in the OR. I just love their love so much. Only being able to select 20 tags was cruel, so thank god for the Optional Tags.

It gets taken a little too far maybe and things happen, but one of them is still unsure if it's real or casual or a joke/game of chicken to the other and is struggling with the casual nature of where things have gone. They think they can handle it but it's hurting them pretty damn bad. Maybe one offered a night of sex as stakes in a poker game and whoever is offered this is now having feelings about what they've been wanted so badly being offered to them in such an impersonal way or what have you. Whatever the circumstance you choose, I love the angst of deciding whether you want to take what you can get in the way you can get it or not wanting it if it's not real on both sides (it should end up that it is real on both sides. while I love some angst/conflict, I do want a happy ending)! Charhawk

I love all the different directions this ship can go, there are so many really great ways to read their relationship that all create different dynamics - I love a flexible ship. I do prefer the directions where Charles' more human side is leaned into, like the episodes where he either has a softer side or has been humbled in a way that makes him re-evaluate pre-conceived notions he had about himself or those around him rather than digging his heels in. I love the way they bicker and snipe at each other, but still have that begrudging at first but eventually genuine respect for each other, both as physicians and as people. Also, if you want to go the poly route, I love post-war Chardonnahawk, where Charles and Donna are married for real and Hawkeye is a third partner for them who either comes and goes as he pleases/is a more serious type of friend with benefits, or is a permanent partner.

If you write NSFW: I prefer Hawkeye bottoming. For D/s dynamics if you lean into any of those tags, I usually prefer sub Hawkeye/dom Charles, but some things work better w sub Charles so if you want to write something that works better in that direction, go for it.

(hurt Charles) Agitated control freak needs to be dominated sexually to calm down and is bad at asking for it: What it says on the tin. The tag I wasn't expecting, but when I saw, knew it was perfect for this ship. Would love to have this maybe be an ongoing situation that they don't instigate often, especially since Charles is so bad at asking for it when he needs it, and they don't really talk about it ever outside of the occasions under which it happens (probably because Charles avoids any attempts Hawkeye makes to talk about it/discuss boundaries), so perhaps some amount of under-negotiated kink. But it's basically fallen into a pattern of Charles getting worse and worse, more and more insufferable to be around (I love him but he can get insufferable lmfao), and eventually it reaches a peak where something or someone is going to blow, so Hawkeye tracks him down, makes sure they have privacy and doms the hell out of him until he breaks and calms down/gets what he needs. Still bottom Hawkeye but bottom =/= sub. NSFW for this one obviously 😅
(hurt Hawkeye) BDSM - Sub lovingly dommed into accepting words of love and praise until they cry from overwhelm: Kind of tangential/a reverse to the previous prompt, haha. Similar, but different. (hurt Hawkeye or hurt Charles) hurt character sustains a serious but temporary injury or disability: This prompt is much more general/what it says on the tin kind of request but thinking about like a serious hand injury or like the time when Hawk was temporarily blinded by the stove - something along those lines. But the other character taking care of them both medically but also helping them with tasks/as well as emotionally/with their fears anxieties of what if it's permanent. Could go in any direction re: who is hurt, either/or/both, but my big thing with Houlihawk is I don't see them as a traditional romantic relationship. I specifically want to see them as friends/a qpr, even if they're hooking up/kissing/otherwise participating in acts traditionally associated w romantic partners. It's okay if, in narrative, the lines are blurred/there is confusion for one or both of the characters, but I'd like for that to be clear in the narrative if you go that direction! I love the way their relationship grows throughout canon from coworkers who barely tolerate each other to tentative/begrudging respect to friends to best friends (Margbeejhawk best friendship is so real to me). I would be happy to receive something set in any stage of that relationship trajectory, though I do have a slight preference for the final three stages (though if you have a great idea for the 'coworkers who barely tolerate each other' face growing past that in the face of the hurt/comfort, go for it!)

(somewhat both, but mostly hurt Margaret) What's Up Doc episode tag: As far as we know, Margaret hasn't actually seen Donald in awhile, and I hc that, whether she was able to admit it or not, if she had been pregnant, the baby probably would have been Hawkeye's (re: Comrades in Arms), not Donald's, with the likelihood of that being part of it contributing to why she's so stressed (and also melancholy at the end that she wasn't, since by this point in the show, we know Donald is a scum bag and she and Hawkeye are so much closer). Would love to see something about that episode through the lens of that circumstance, and would especially love the hurt/comfort to be that she is in fact pregnant and, with Hawkeye's support of whatever decision she makes/being there for both verbal/moral comfort as well as physical affection, she decides that she needs to get an abortion, both for her career/future in that sense, and maybe even for the marriage she's still trying to save. Even if Hawkeye has offered to "do the right thing" and told her he'd marry her if she wanted to divorce Donald (I especially love this in regard to them not necessarily even trying to kid themselves that they could work as a long term romantic partnership, but discussing the idea of doing it as friends for their kid). Them both having feelings about that, even if they know it's what's best. And in the end, once she's made her decision, Hawkeye organizing/doing the procedure for her in secret since it's illegal/comforting her afterward.
(somewhat both, but mostly hurt Hawkeye) Another trip to an Aid Station in the mid/later season era: Hawkeye gets seriously injured and can't treat himself/can't stand long enough to treat patients. They call for help and Margaret tries to get Hawkeye stable, potentially with instruction from Hawkeye on surgical techniques that she isn't trained on/isn't confident enough to do on her own (even if she's been working in the MASH long enough that she probably could do it on her own). Maybe even once Hawkeye is stable enough that he isn't going to bleed out or what have you but either unable to stand or is too shaky/unsteady to safely operate, them doing a similar routine to have Margaret do everything she can to help/operate on the soldiers at the Aid Station with Hawkeye guiding her through it/taking on the role of nurse and handing her objects. Would love to see the aftermath/further care/comfort as well once things have calmed down and either they're still waiting on help and have to sleep there overnight or if they get brought back to the 4077th. Huddling for warmth/affectionate touch/joking around/literal sleeping together.
(hurt Margaret) Hawkeye comforting Margaret after her dad being shitty: Circumstances of what happened up to you - maybe it's after Father's Day or a disheartening or cruel (intentionally or unintentionally) letter. Maybe she broke the news of her divorce to her father and he was really shitty about it. Or whatever other ideas you have. Found family/best friend (or best friend with benefits) being there for her in the aftermath, comforting her/making her feel better. Could be SFW or NSFW, I love both.
(hurt Hawkeye) Circa WTK, Margaret offering comfort to Hawkeye re: Trapper being gone: Maybe she knew about Traphawk or maybe she didn't (if she did, I'd prefer to her being surprisingly cool about it, especially if this is the first time Hawkeye finds out that she knew). Perhaps it's even a past Margtraphawk situation and they're both upset, even if Hawkeye is way more fully hurt/broken about it). But I like the small hints of Margaret being more sympathetic to Hawkeye than Frank when Trapper leaves and it would be cool to see that confirmed. Could be NSFW but I think I'm actually leaning towards SFW for this one, mainly with Hawkeye just being comforted/understood in a safe way where he can be open about how upset he is without being afraid of his life being ruined by a blue discharge. Maybe she didn't know about Traphawk and she comes to him with the intention of chewing him out for not being as on top of things as before, even after all that time on R&R and he breaks down - either she figures it out on her own, or he's feeling low enough to tell her because things are already bad enough, what's one more life ruining thing? But, even if she's surprised/taken aback, it all makes sense in retrospect and she just holds him/tells him it's okay/she won't tell anyone/etc and just stays with him/offers comfort when he needs it. Would even love some dumb light hearted lecherous Hawkeye comments towards the end where he's trying to save face and she let's it slide given the circumstances but not without telling him that's the only pass he gets and if he tries it again, she'll knock his teeth out or some shit.
(both hurt) Character trying to hold it together/2AM talk in the kitchen Ao3 tags: This prompt is much more general, but I just love the idea of them both being fucking miserable / overworked / having a goddamn terrible time for whatever reason, maybe there's extenuating personal problems for both of them outside of the usual stress of an intensely overworked MASH during a push, but they're both fraying at the edges/can't sleep/had nightmares/whatever and unexpectedly run into each other in the kitchen in the middle of the night and offer comfort to each other. Maybe some literal bed sharing and/or comfort sex - perhaps Margaret invites Hawkeye back to her tent - probably with the explicit intention of it not being sexual but both SFW/NSFW are good for this prompt. They're so co-dependent but also they're competitive and snarky and take pot shots at each other. I don't like when their co-dependency ends up being flattened down to wholesome domestic bliss, I like when their relationship has the ups and downs that I love about them in canon. How they can both be terrible to each other despite loving each other so much. I want them to be happy, to be clear, I just don't think that has to mean they are just perfect loving partners 100% of the time!

During or post-war are both okay, I also love genderfucky/gender non-conforming Hawk but that's not required. Re: Peg, Beejpeg can get divorced if post-canon, BJ can be cheating, or Beejpeg could have either established poly or some kind of agreement that BJ is allowed to do what he needs to do over in Korea (it's just that neither of them expected he'd fall in love with someone there). I just don't want lavender marriage for the Hunnicutts or gay BJ. (hurt Hawkeye) Period of Adjustment episode tag/aftermath: This is not about villainizing BJ/woobifying Hawkeye to be clear, I've just always wanted something to come in the aftermath of Period of Adjustment because, while I understand what BJ was feeling in the episode/why he reacted to things in the way he did, it still always bothered me that he never apologized for knocking Hawkeye out/destroying the still/etc and then laughing at him/making fun of him for taking precautions afterwards. Like. It's fair to suggest that the helmet was potentially partially a joke, but I don't think it was fully a joke - the way Alan was playing it, he did look genuinely concerned/alarmed - and yeah, BJ was drunk, but even so. I'm glad that he gets the comfort he needed from Hawkeye in the episode, that's good! But I wish that once BJ had sobered up/calmed down, even the next day or however long after, that he'd apologized, and since we didn't see it happen in canon, I've always wanted to see it addressed in fic. Maybe Hawk has a black eye the next morning and BJ apologizes/touches it gently/there's some kind of physical affection whether kissing or platonic. Could be SFW or NSFW, either is good.
(hurt Hawkeye) Trip to an Aid Station too close to the front for comfort in the mid/later season era: Could be an alternate take on Where There's a Will, There's a War where Hawkeye does get seriously injured, or an unrelated to canon occasion. But Basically Hakweye is sent to the front and gets seriously injured (would like it to be scary enough to be life threatening, but which - if he pulls through (and he does in the end) - doesn't get him discharged. Hawkeye shows up in a bus or on a helicopter as a patient at the 4077 (the aid station doesn't have time to send word to the 4077, so he just shows up by surprise) in seriously injured condition and everyone is freaked out/worried, but nobody more than BJ who insists on treating Hawk/doing the surgery he needs himself - whether or not that's a good idea or not based on his stress level/emotional distress over the whole thing is up to you. I particularly love getting together fics, but I also enjoy an established relationship as long as it's got something to drive the story forward! Basically, I love some conflict - as long as there's a happy ending (this doesn't have to mean everything is perfect for everyone involved, but as long as my ship has a happy ending/is together/things end in a good place for them, I'm happy!). As for ratings, anything is fine - smut is welcome, but is not required. Third person POV is the one thing I'm firm on - I really don't care for first/second person in fanfiction.

As for specific content that I enjoy: Yearning. My soul for yearning. Mutual Pining. Incredible. I love banter/witty dialogue - generally my favorite characters tend to have that about them so when it gets incorporated in fics I really love it. I also love an ensemble story so if there's other characters/ships featured in the background, that's always fun, but is not a requirement by any means. I really love when a character who has a lot of pressure on them - either from those around them or that they put on themselves - is made to rest/let someone else take care of them for awhile. I also enjoy when characters are made to question concepts and/or parts of their identities in ways that could drastically alter the trajectory of their lives. Love kissing/cuddling and if you want to write/draw smut, it can be tender or kinky or both - whatever you desire as long as my DNWs are kept out of it. Love road trip fics. I know it's losing favor for understandable reasons but I do love a miscommunication/poor communication causing problems kind of fics. For established relationships, I love seeing people learning how to be together in new ways like moving in together for example, or foraying into polyamory and learning how to be a good and loving partner to more than one person.

I have many M*A*S*H ships and while I don't have specific thoughts about every single one, here are some M*A*S*H specific likes/loves and DNWs, as well as some specifics about some of the ships included in my request!

General M*A*S*H Likes/Loves:

All from general + two grown ass dudes sharing a single person army cot, R&R together, secret relationships, Hawktrap and/or Swamp Rats shenanigans, Mutual Pining, keeping things generally believable to the time period, though pre-war (for some ships), during canon (for all), and post-war (for most) are all fine! Genderfuckery specifically wrt Hawkeye is loved but not required. The whole "Forcing person A (cough, hawkeye, cough) to let Person B take care of them" trope is a big one for me in this fandom. Found family is a huge part of why I love M*A*S*H so that being included is always a plus.

Unsure if this should be in likes or do not wants haha, it's kind of an in between note, so I'll put it here: If you're going to have a Peg or Louise be included in the story but not as a part of a polyamorous relationship, I prefer that they be allowed to have agency/a personality over handwaving any conflict away, so either let things be messy on screen or off (whether things between her and her husband end amicably or not) or don't make her part of the story at all. Happy to elaborate on this if you have questions, though there are some more specific notes further down when I talk about the poly ships including Peg or Louise!

General M*A*S*H Do Not Wants:

Everything from main DNW list
Character bashing (with the exception of Frank) and villainizing characters for the benefit of others (specifically: Trapper. As someone who genuinely likes both Traphawk and Hunnihawk, it really bothers me when people villainize him or paint him as someone who didn't really care for Hawkeye just to make BJ look good/like a knight in shining armor to Hawkeye's damsel in distress. It's one thing for that to be BJ's perception/mental image of Trapper before meeting him, but it should be clear in the narrative that that's just his perception and not reality).
Intense physical whump beyond exhaustion/fatigue/types of things that happen in canon. Someone getting injured in the line of duty (but ending up fine) is fine. Torture/gore/extreme direct violence/etc is not fine.
(I may add more later but this is what I can think of now)

I saw some people mention this and thought it was a good idea, but because I included so many ship options in my request, it felt a bit impractical to compile a full list for every ship haha. Even if the end goal is a polyamorous ship (unless the marriage was open/polyamorous to begin with), I don't want it to feel like a bandaid solution to make the husband and his new partner (probably Hawkeye, lets be real) feel better about it, especially if they got together before telling her/her husband was essentially cheating on her.
