Taco, Taco, Who Has the Best Taco?

It has seemed like since we had Porter, that Ben and I instantly got "old."  By "old" I mean less adventurous but mostly in our date ideas. Before we were making ice sculptures, mini golfing, we Ben was sliding down campus rails, we were bowling every alley, and sipping milkshakes like we would never gain weight.  I like always being on the go.  Ben is more of a homebody.  He would love it if I would just sit down on the couch and watch a movie.  Since Porter goes to bed around 8 we aren't as free to go and be a part of all the night action (ha ha).  Thus, we have become more of the home body type. It's give and take, right?

This past weekend Ben and I were talking about all of this. I told him I wanted to do something fun, like what we use to do.  Here is what we came up with...

Taco, Taco Who Has the Best Taco?
Disclaimer: We aren't huge taco loving fast food eaters

We were on a mission to find the best fast food taco. The 3 restaurants that were in the running were Taco Bell, Del Taco, and Taco Time. We ordered one hard shell taco and one soft shell taco from each.  Then we did a blind taste test and rated the tacos on a scale from 1-10. Can you guess who won??

Ben's Results                                                Kimi' s Results
Hard Shell                                                     Hard Shell
Taco Bell ($0.99)-7.5                                   Taco Bell-7
Del Taco ($0.50)-4                                       Del Taco-3
Taco Time ($2.00)-6                                     Taco Time-4.5

Soft Shell
Taco Bell ($0.99)-6.5                                  Taco Bell-6
Del Taco ($0.50)-4                                      Del Taco-3
Taco Time ($2.00)-5                                    Taco Time-5

TACO BELL Wins. They won by a long shot. Our favorite was the taco bell hard shell. Their meat was seasoned the best and it was easy to tell which taco tasted best. Del Taco was the cheapest, smallest, and the taco was terrible. Taco Time's were the biggest in size but they were the most expensive and they were ok. If anything, I feel like we performed a great service for others out there wondering. Taco, taco who has the best taco?  Next time this question pops into your head, think no more and just go to Taco Bell.

I know this date wasn't that adventurous, but anything involving food, I'm all for it. We had awesome company (Porter), we got out of the house and then came back to watch an episode of Shark Tank. As Hannah would say. "best of both worlds!" Next time your fresh out of date ideas, do this.

We have $5 pizzas on the list next but I wanted to see if you had any ideas on what foods we should taste test next? I'll need them so we can keep this adventurous dating streak alive!

Easter

We had a great Easter. It was that much more fun to celebrate with Porter. Even though Porter is only one, I kept tell Ben that Porter was going be really good at Eater egg hunts. Ben tells me I'm such a proud mom, but he really was skilled for his age :)

We went to the Provo Beach resort on Saturday and they had activities and kids all over.  Here are pictures of Porter at the petting zoo. Porter meet a little bunny and an Easter skunk. He is so brave.

This is the tortoise and the hare. I am grossed out every time I see this picture. The grey blob is a rabbit! Ewww. I don't know what happen to it, or why it got so obese. It makes me shiver. Porter didn't touch that rabbit.

They had an Easter egg drop. People stood on top of the building and threw down huge Easter egg pinatas that broke open and the kids ran for the candy that spilled out. There was a big crowd of people and to reach the kids in the back they started throwing candy from the building. People were getting hit left and right from the falling candy. It was pretty funny. They got Porter in the head with a sucker but he recovered quickly once he was eating it. Porter also got some starbursts, you can see him holding them. He held tight to the starbursts the whole time we walked around.

I tried giving Porter to the Easter bunny, but he started to cry. He was trying to get away from him, even when I was holding him.

Sunday night we had dinner at our house. Chet, David, Lindsey, and the Almond's came over for a turkey dinner. We had more of a Thanksgiving feast. It was yummy!! Then we did an egg hunt for the kids. Porter really was good at it. We just need to work on gathering first then opening.

Then we had an adult egg hunt. I was the most excited about this. Jen hid the eggs in the front yard, while Ben hid eggs in the back. Ben really hid his eggs and went as far as burying one in the dirt. Once the hunt was on, Chet and Travis really got into it. Travis won with 22 eggs. Chet was close with 21. I had 17. David and Jen had around 12. Lindsey had 7. The eggs were filled with random things. Some good, some not so good. Of course there was candy, but I also had numbers to turn in for a prize, black beans, tea candles. rocks, bark, and ribbon. It was fun to see everyone open their eggs and see the reactions.

I also taught our primary class on Sunday and showed them this video.  It helps us remember what Easter is all about. Check it out, it does a great job at depiction the Savior's life and my primary class really got into it. When it first started they kept asking me if it this was real, but one little girl set them straight and told them that in Jesus' time they didn't have video cameras. It's just actors. I love little kids.

Hope you had a nice Easter weekend.

Porter Party Over Here

Porter turned 1 this past month. It was my first birthday party to plan. I was more than excited to throw him a party.  Porter's first word was "ball" so that's what the theme was for his party. We were also excited because both sets of grandparents came into town for the occasion.

When Porter woke up from his nap the house was decorated with balls and you could tell he knew something was going on today.  As we passed all of the balloons he kept pointing at them saying "ball, ball, ball"  He was center of attention and loved it.

His big cake was almost a disaster.  In my head I imaged a 2 layered cake with a nice sphere shaped ball on top (making it 3 layers).  As I was frosting the two bottom layers the top cake kept sliding all over. I finally picked up the top ball piece and pulled off one of the layers. It turned out ok though.

We served Popcorn balls
Rice balls (he's 1/4 Japanese, only fitting)
Grapes (those are ball shaped)
Football shaped cheese ball and crackers
Basketball oreo pops
Basketball Cake
Gumballs
Sourballs
Cuties (Porter calls all ball shaped fruit balls)

Porter loves food. He makes mmmm noises after he takes a bite of something he likes. Because he likes food so much, Ben and I imagined Porter digging into his cake and getting it all over his face.  He was a little more cautious. He would get some frosting on his fingers and try to flick it off. Then we would go back to picking at his cake. It was fun to watch him. He loved being center of attention and knew something was going on today.

The kids were on the ground eating and Porter crawled right over to them. He wanted to be a part of the kids club. It was cute.

I think Jen's kids had fun too, because Porter wasn't really into opening all of his presents (he was spoiled) so they got to open all of Porter's presents for him.  They were opening them so fast and wrapping paper was flying all over. It was fun.

These are from his actual birthday which was a few days after the party.  He looks so scared of the candle. He is one happy boy!

Thanks everyone for all of the birthday wishes and celebrating with us.  It made Porter's birthday that much more special. Everyone always had told me that they grow up too fast, and know I understand and can agree. I can't believe our little boy is already one!

Potato Museum

Ever since we have even married, I have wanted to take Ben to the Idaho Potato museum in Blackfoot. I don't know why I have been so excited to take him. Maybe it's because the only thing I remember is a HUGE potato chip and I really wanted to see if was still there.

It was!!!

ImageWe learned a few neat potato facts and we got a picture in front of the potato. Gotta love Blackfoot!

Fire Safety

Image

A few weeks ago the fire station hosted an open house. The station is down the street and Porter has a firemen onsie that was begging to be worn for such a perfect occasion!

They had different demonstrations going on such as climbing the ladder on the fire truck and spraying gallons of water from the very tip top, how to rescue people in a trapped car (jaws of life), helicopter landing, and how/when to use a fire extinguisher. During this demo the firemen asked if we knew how to put out a grease fire?  Instantly I yelled baking soda and a laughed about a memory from Freshmen year. And it went something like this....

I was making french fries and brought out a batch to my roomies. I must have got caught up in the conversation and the next thing I know Kirsten yells "FIRE!!!" I look over into the kitchen and see a glow of orange. We rush into the kitchen and the fire has already gotten up into the vent above the stove. We scream and are frantically running around. Someone yells, "GET WATER!" I yell back, "NO!!!!! BAKING SODA!!!" and run out of the apartment downstairs to our neighbors house knocking like a mad women to ask for baking soda. (why i didn't know where baking soda was in our apartment?, is a baffle to me, to this day.) They quickly gave me their baking soda and I ran back upstairs and tried to throw some on the fire. I was scared of getting too close but luckily Kirsten was brave and took the box from me and started dumping it on the pan and above in the vent. She was the only real firefighter in this situation. Me and the others were "helpers" but I am proud to say that I knew what to do with a grease fire. In the end, I'm glad that fire safety is still being taught. They demonstrated how to use a fire extinguisher but, I propose they throw in knowing where your closes box of baking soda is too!
