[sticky entry] Sticky: About Me

kingstoken: (Default)
Just a little about me for anyone who is newly following me or has stumbled across this journal. I am a fan writer, a gif maker, I make graphics like icons, moodboards and cover art, and I have tried my hand at making vids as well. You can find all my links in the sidebar or listed on my profile page. I am in many fandoms and am a multishipper, however I do have what I consider my main ships for certain fandoms, and I tend to ship mature pairings (with a few exceptions). I will list my current and past fandoms, and the pairings I really like in those fandoms, under the cut. I am the moderator for [community profile] fandomtrees, this is my is my fifth year doing that challenge, it is fun, but also mildly stressful. I have also run challenges over on tumblr. I am also an advanced editor over on Fanlore. On Dreamwidth I also post about movies and books I have enjoyed, in the past I did the [community profile] dwbookbingo. Unfortunately, that community is no longer running a bingo, but I liked doing it so much that I created my own book bingo, which a few DW mutuals do with me. This is the 2025 Book Bingo Card.

Hi, for anyone who is not aware, it appears that [personal profile] spikedluv passed away unexpectedly near the beginning of the month. The information is shared here on a comment on her last post, https://spikedluv.dreamwidth.org/2143159.html#comments, and has a link to her obituary.

spikedluv and I would often comment on each other's posts. I also had the honour of making art for multiple of her fics. She often bid on my offers for Fandom Trumps Hate and other fandom auctions. She was always such a pleasure to work with, and was always delighted by the graphics I created for her.

She loved Hudson & Rex and Murder She Wrote, among many other fandoms.

She will be missed.

Challenge #15

How Did the Fandom Snowflake Challenge Go?

I can't believe it's over already!  I will say this year didn't go as well as past years, I didn't complete every challenge, but I did complete most of them.  I think the ones I bounced off the most were the "talk about yourself" ones, I just wasn't in the right head space for them.  I find those types of questions awkward anyways, I never know what to say.  Like if you asked me to talk about my writing, or shows I like, etc, I can always find something to talk about, but stuff like "what do you like about yourself?" and my mind goes blank.  I do like myself, I'm just not good about selling myself.  I also, I made very few recs this year, in past years it felt like most of my posts were recs.

Anyways, I enjoyed myself and will probably be back again next year.

Challenge #14

In your own space, create a promo and/or rec list for someone new to a fandom

I wasn't sure what to do with this at first, I talked about my love for the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films earlier during the snowflake challenge and I've made primers for other things I love for previous challenges, see Dead Boy Detectives and Sherlock & Daughter, so I decided to do something slightly different and try and convince Doctor Who fans to watch the Twelfth Doctor's run, specially his last season.

I've heard many Doctor Who fans say that they bounced right off of Twelve's first season, which I understand, because it was a little rough at first. Plus I know not everyone was a fan of Clara. So, they stopped watching or they skipped it. This is my way of trying to convince you to watch Twelve's last season (series 10).

Title: Doctor Who

Media: Television series

Approx length: 12 episodes plus one special, approx 13 hours (Optional: the two specials before this season "The Husbands of River Song" and "The Return of Doctor Mysterio", they are both fun, and if you like River Song you might want to check out "The Husbands of River Song" as it is River Song's send-off, at least for now).

What is it, in summary?: The Doctor finds himself acting as a Professor at St Luke's University, where he meets Bill, a cafeteria worker who sneaks in to listen to his lectures. All while the Doctor keeps a secret locked in a vault under the university. Bill is the main companion of the season, along with occasionally Nardole, a cyborg who is the Doctor's manservant/keeper.

What do you love about it?: First off, I love Bill, the Doctor and her have a great dynamic. She is impressed by the Doctor, but not in awe of him, and she's not afraid to ask questions, but rarely in a cruel way. At one point Bill pretends that he's her grandfather, which kind of fits. Bill's a lesbian, so there is no romantic tension, none of that, they're just friends.
Nardole is mostly there for comic relief. He is not impressed by the Doctor in the slightest, and he tries his best to keep the Doctor focused and following certain rules, with very little success.
Last, but not least, the third component to this season, that I love so much, is Missy, Missy, Missy! For those who don't know, Missy is the female incarnation of The Master. She was introduced near the end of Twelve's first season, but I don't think you necessarily need that context, you only need to know that this is the Master, and if you know Who at all you know something of their history. One sub-theme in this season is "Can the Master be rehabilitated?"

Content warnings: this kind of depends on the episode, but death, non-consensual body modification, injury, violence

Who do I ship?: First off, I kind of ship Doctor/Master a little bit in any form, but Twelve/Missy above all others. There is all this history and tension between them, but also this softness that neither one of them quite wants to admit to. There is also this yearning for a relationship from them both, but they can't quite trust each other enough to let it happen. There's a real tragedy about it. (Also, the chemistry between Capaldi and Gomez is great.)

I did like Clara, but I do wish that her time on the show had been a little shorter, or that Capaldi had agreed to do a fourth season, because I would have loved to have Bill for longer, and I wanted more time for Twelve and Missy's dynamic to develop, to see if they could build a better relationship between them.

I'm not saying every episode is great, some are much better than others, but I think it deserves so much more love than it gets.

Lastly, let me persuade with some gifs:

Challenge #13

TALK ABOUT A COMMUNITY SPACE YOU LIKE. It doesn’t need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it’s even one that you’ve barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

Here a few communities I enjoy:

- Holmesian Mantelpiece - this one is over on Tumblr, and its a community for all Sherlock Holmes fandoms. We have fun sharing fanworks and voting on daily trivia
- [community profile] fancake - is a great reccing community, every month is a different theme, and members share fanworks related to the them
- Fanlore Discord - if you're a fanlore editor come join us on the discord, we chat mostly about editing articles, etc, but also greater fandom stuff
- [community profile] holmestice - if you're looking for a Hollmes related exchange I highly recommend holmestice, they run two exchanges a year, one in the spring and one in the winter, and its open to all Holmes adaptations.  I got a lovely Rathbone Holmes fic last round, plus a nice Granada treat.

Challenge #12

Make an appreciation post to those who enhance your fandom life. Appreciate them in bullet points, prose, poetry, a moodboard, a song... whatever moves you!

I'm terrible with posts like this, but here goes. Thank you to everyone who follows me and leaves comments on my posts. Thank you to everyone who does the Book Bingo with me. Aand last but not least, thank you to all my fellow Fanlore editors, there aren't a lot of us, but we toil away trying our best to archive fandom history.

Anyways, please enjoy this multifandom dance vid I found on the net:

In your own space, grant someone's wish from Challenge #5. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your own post with the wishes you granted if you feel comfortable doing so.

I went through the wishlists and mostly gave recs, music for snowynight and kanadka, books for skytintedwater, podcasts for queer-scribbling, and a movie for cypresssunn.

Challenge #10: Big Mood (Board)

CHOOSE SOMETHING YOU LOVE AND CREATE A MINI MOOD COLLECTION OF THREE (or more) ITEMS THAT EVOKE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT IT. You don’t have to limit yourself to visual media, or collect the items into a special format like a square (though you can if you’d like).

So yesterday while doing some editing on Fanlore I found out what a colorbar was and I thought they were kind of neat. So for today's Snowflake Challenge I'm twenty years too late for a trend and made a colorbar for Holmes/Watson:

And yes I do realize one pic is of Basil/Dawson, but they are the mouse equivalent for Holmes/Watson, and I love them.

Snowflake Challenge: A flatlay of a snowflake shaped shortbread cake, a mug with coffee, and a string of holiday lights on top of a rustic napkin.

I've been busy that last few days with wrapping up fandomtrees, so I'm catching up.

Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

Oh man, I know some people have very detailed plans when it comes to writing, but I think I'm more of gardener than an architect like George RR Martin used to say.  First I usually get a prompt either while doing an exchange or from one of those prompt month challenges like Flufftober, then I think on it for awhile.  Once the outline of a scene has formed in my brain then I write it down.  Usually I write it out by hand first, then I will type it up on my computer.  The only time I skip handwriting is if it is only a drabble, that I might just type up quickly on my computer. Then I let a little time pass (usually a few days) and then reread it and do my revisions.  I usually only do one set of revisions, which I know goes against common writing advice, but I don't usually have the patience to wait long for my story to be complete, also exchanges and what not have pretty tight deadlines, depending on the exchange. I normally don't use a beta reader unless it is a requirement.

Challenge #9

Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I'm sure I've talked about Hurt/Comfort before, and it's still the goat!  I especially love it when the character that doesn't normally get cared for, or is normally the caretaker, is hurt and has to accept care and comfort from another.

I also love Fairy Tale/Fantasy AUs.  I'm not even sure why, but if you put my faves in a fairy tale retelling I'll eat that up with a spoon.  There was this exchange called Fairy Tale Inspired that I loved, and participated in every year, but unfortunately it stopped running.  I thought about running a similar exchange myself, but I have so much on my plate at the moment I don't currently have the time.

I also enjoy a good regency AU, probably because I read so many regency romances years ago.  I especially like alternative realities where same sex pairings were accepted at the time.

Lastly, bed-sharing.  For some reason the characters have to cuddle up in bed together, yes please!  It doesn't even have to lead to sexy times, although a little smut is always a treat.  I just love my characters being all cozy together.

Challenge #6

Top 10 Challenge

Okay I originally planned to do a top ten vids list, but I checked and I did that last year and not much has changed.  Then I was going to do top ten fics I read in 2025, but they would all be Sherlock Holmes so not very exciting.  Finally I thought about listing my top ten Sherlock Holmes adaptations, but then I realized that I haven't watched ten adaptations.  So after all that and racking my brain I just thought I'd do something simple and pick my top ten Doctor Who companions!

I will preface this by saying I have only watched New Who and only up til Thirteen's last season.  At that point I got sucked into Sherlock Holmes and haven't returned (but I hope to at some point).  So this excludes all of Classic Who and Fifteen.  I'm also excluding characters like The Master and River Song because they don't quite fit in the companion category for me, and I'm excluding one episode only companions (although we've had a few great ones).  Lastly, this is just my personal preference.

10. Graham
9. Yasmin
8. Sarah Jane
7. Clara
6. Amy & Rory
5. Jack
4. Rose
3. Martha
2. Bill

Challenge #5

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts.

This one is fun and easy.  My wishes are:

1. Check out my fandomtree and if you'd like you can leave me a little something under my tree.  I'm asking for Sherlock Holmes (Granada and Rathbone films), The Great Mouse Detective, Our Flag Means Death, Doctor Who, and Dead Boy Detectives.  The deadline is Jan 17th.

2. Kudos and Comments on my fanworks!  My AO3, I've created fanworks for Star Trek, Good Omens, Sherlock Holmes, Supernatural, OFMD, and many more!

3. Go to arab.org and "click to help", it's free and all money raised is donated to UN agencies.

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I wasn't sure I understood this challenge at first, but it looks like people are just sharing cool things they've come across on the internet, so here is a short list of cool things I've come across lately in no particular order:

- Star Wars art from a zine on Fanlore of Han, Leia, Luke and Chewbacca
- Art of Holmes and Watson in their jammies
- It was Sherlock Holmes' birthday yesterday, so please enjoy this vid highlighting all the different actors who have played Holmes throughout the years
- I recently listened to this podcast Curse of: America's Next Top Model, it goes into the show's history and the problematic nature of the show, also did you know the models never even got paid for their time on the show?!
A poster for the 50th anniversary re-release of Goncharov, the greatest film that never existed
- Angel Aziraphale and Angel Crowley art

Anyways, I could keep going, but I don't want it to be too long.  I hope you found something you enjoy!

Stole this from [personal profile] lebateleur

Your main fandom last year?
Sherlock Holmes, various adaptations but Holmes in general

Your favorite movie watched last year?
I didn't watch many, but I would say K-Pop Demon Hunters, it's very fun.
However, I also watched all the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films this year and my favourites were The Spider Woman and The Woman in Green.

Your favorite book read last year?
If I can chose a children's book, I'm going to say Basil of Baker Street.  I was delighted by it, so many Holmes references, and a good little mystery and adventure story.

Your favorite TV show of the year?
I watched the good chunk of the Granada Sherlock Holmes series year, and I loved it!  It's very book accurate, and where they did makes some changes it works out well.
Also, Interview with a Vampire season 2 was fantastic!
But also, I'm currently working my way through Heated Rivalry and I'm enjoying it so far.

Your favorite video game of the year?
I didn't really play any games this year unfortunately.  I started The Beekeeper's Picnic, but unfortunately never finished it, but hopefully some day.

Your favorite song, album, or artist to listen to this year?
Song: Golden from K-Pop Demon Hunters (it is such a great sing-along, belt it out type of song)
Album: K-Pop Demon Hunters Soundtrack (so many great bangers on that, although my choices were also slim because I didn't listen to many full albums this year)
Artist: The only one that comes to mind is Chappel Roan, although I think she was more 2024 than 2025, but I was still listening her quite a bit at the beginning of the year

Favorite podcast of the year?
Sherlock & Co (although, I've fallen behind on it).  I also enjoy If Books Could Kill.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
I guess falling into Sherlock Holmes fandom this year was unexpected, and something I really needed this year to distract me from stuff going on in my life.  One of my fave Good Omens authors starting posting Granada Holmes related stuff and it got me to check out the series and I've been in thick of it ever since.  I loved the Sherlock Holmes stories as a teen, and there has been some comfort in returning to what I previously loved only in a different way.

Your biggest fandom disappointment?
No real major disappointments I can think of, but that's mostly because I've been sticking with older completed series recently so no newer series that are cancelled after only one season like previous years.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
John Watson

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Svetlana from Heated Rivalry, maybe?

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Can I tell you how times I rewatched The Empty House and the scene where Watson finds out Holmes is alive?  Way too many times!

Fandom resolutions for 2026?
I have a lot of IRL stuff happening this year, so I'm putting no pressure on myself when it comes to fandom.

Your biggest fannish anticipations for the new year?
I have no idea, I didn't expect to fall into the fandoms I did this year, so I'm sure I'll be surprised again this year.

Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

I'm having the worst luck with the Snowflake challenge this year, my brain just won't cooperate. I bounced off of the first two challenges, I just couldn't seem to bring myself to do them. So this is my attempt at doing challenge number three.

Okay, I'm going to talk a little about the Sherlock Holmes films starring Basil Rathbone. I watched them back in the autumn and I can't get them out of my head! Firstly I have to say that these are not for everyone, they are not book actuate, most of the films take place in the 1940s, so they were modern adaptations at the time. The characterization of Watson is off, poor Watson comes off as a bit of a bumbler, mostly for comedic effect, although how much he is a bumbler varies depending on the film. Also there are three different actors who play Moriarty!

Taking all that in consideration I still love these films! I wasn't convinced in the beginning, but as the series went on I became hooked. The Holmes & Watson relationship is not like canon, and yet I still came to love their dynamic. I ship Holmes/Watson, like I do for almost every adaptation.

Image

In a way this terrible for me because the fandom for this 1940s film series is so small! There are only 182 works on AO3, and only a tiny handful of writers who write for the fandom, and usually only for challenges like Holmestice. I'm pretty sure I've read almost every Rathbone!Holmes fic on AO3 in the last couple of months.

I'm probably not doing a good job of selling it, but if you like old Hollywood movies, or are a Holmes aficionado who likes to know all the different adaptations maybe give it a chance. One note, these were made mostly during WWII, so be prepared for a sprinkling of war-time propaganda.

Anyways, here is a cute fanvid to maybe sell you on it:

I realized I never got around to promoting my own [community profile] fandomtrees, so here it is.  I'm asking for anything other than icons (fic, art, podfic, etc), and the fandoms I'm asking for are: The Great Mouse Detective, Sherlock Holmes (both Granada and the Rathbone films), Our Flag Means Death, Dead Boy Detectives, Doctor Who, and podfic for any fandom I've written for.

I finished my 2025 Book Bingo card! I am very late finishing this year, and I almost thought I wouldn't complete it in time. With everything going on in my real life it was very hard to concentrate on reading. Thank God for short books and audiobooks, I could listen to those while I was doing other things like cleaning, sorting, packing, etc. Also, the 2026 card is ready, so go check that out if you haven't seen it.

Behold my complete card!
